Best Campgrounds near Madison, OH

The Madison, Ohio area encompasses a diverse camping landscape with several established campgrounds and recreational areas along the Lake Erie shoreline. Geneva State Park Campground offers electric sites with some water and sewer hookups being added, while nearby options like Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday and Kenisee's Grand River Campground provide additional amenities including cabins and glamping accommodations. Most campgrounds in the region feature developed sites for both tent and RV camping, with several properties offering waterfront or water-view locations. The area also includes Lake Erie Bluffs, which offers more primitive tent camping accessed by hiking or boating in.

Seasonal considerations significantly impact camping experiences in northeastern Ohio, with most campgrounds operating from May through October. Geneva State Park remains open year-round, providing off-season options for campers. The region experiences significant temperature variations, with hot, humid summers and cold winters that can bring lake effect snow. Many campgrounds require advance reservations, especially for weekend stays during peak summer months. Water access is a primary draw, though weather conditions on Lake Erie can change rapidly. As one visitor noted, "Most if not all sites have views of the beautiful lake and the Pennsylvania shoreline across the lake. The campground is busy and very popular but the crew is super efficient at checking in campers."

Waterfront camping sites receive consistently high ratings from visitors who appreciate the lake views and recreational opportunities. Several campgrounds provide boat ramps and fishing access, allowing campers to take advantage of Lake Erie and inland lakes. The regional campgrounds vary in privacy levels, with some sites offering wooded separation while others have more open layouts. Geneva State Park features a beach and bike paths connecting to the small town of Geneva-on-the-Lake. According to reviews, raccoons are notably clever at many campgrounds in the area, requiring careful food storage. Cell service can be variable throughout the region, with some areas having weak coverage. Campers particularly value the quieter, nature-focused experience available at several campgrounds despite their proximity to urban areas.

    Punderson State Park Campground

    Solo tent camping went well

I had originally gotten lot #81 but quickly got it switched to #83 because it was just waaaay better. Flatter ground and I was able to go deeper into the woods.

I went the first week of October, and on weekdays, which was great because I had no neighbors.

Staff was great, check in area also has a little store with all the essentials stocked up, lots of trails, great for biking and hiking, a park for the kids, fishing, canoeing, showers, flush toilets, all that fancy stuff was there.

Only down side was occasional road noise which I just can't seem to escape in my area of Ohio. And I personally wouldn't go here on weekends or over the summer because there are RV sites everywhere, which is another thing that dominates my area of Ohio.

Going again, as long as I don't have the kids, I would try for a test space as far from the road and is deep in the forest as possible. Do that at tge right time of year and I think this will be a great spot for me in the future

    Woodside Lake Park

    Nice quiet camping

Quiet tent campsite parked in this area. There are quite a few RVs parked here and it appears lively, but the tent area in hilltop was quiet and secluded. Very kid friendly. At night, there was highway noise in the background. A lot to do here but also very close to Cuyahoago Valley National Park.

    Beautiful

There are many sites taken by permanent campers for the summer. There are pickleball courts in park. Right on Lake Erie, nice hot showers.

    Village Green Campground

    Long-term RV

This site is great if you’re moving in with your RV. I’m tent camping, and while there were tent sites (about 5), it wasn’t the atmosphere I generally go for.

Positives- there are bathrooms, showers, and laundry. Right on Lake Erie. Fine for overnight.

Cons- this is a live-in RV site in the outskirts of Ohio.

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Old Park With Iron Laden Well Water Beware

I stayed at this park for 2 months in 2023 and was planing on staying for 5 months in 2025. I left after 2 months due to iron& sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail. It damages everything and they won't put a treatment system in at the well pump like the 2nd well has so you can filter it to an acceptable level for drinking, cooking, washing etc.

In 2023 I was in a section that was treated and my filters/softener did a acceptable job to make it work. I Used the laundry facilities also. This trip to see family in 2025 I was in a different section and by the second day it was unacceptable disgusting turbid rusty water with sulfur odor. I bought additional filters for Ferrous Iron Water treatment and remediation along with iron out chemical for cleaning fixtures and plumbing system on the camper. It barely worked well enough for a couple weeks between filter changes and rinsing the system for shower use. I Had to buy drinking water in town every few days for cooking, drinking and brushing teeth etc.

New owners bought the park in 2023 and have increased monthly rent from$750 a month to$950 a month but don't seem to care enough about the health and comfort of their guest to do anything with the well water for a majority of the park. Let alone any of the other infrastructure or"amenities" to be generous in there reference This year even the laundry machines where too disgusting to use that we had to go into town for laundry also.

The park needs major renovations to just bring it up to modern standards. The bath house is in decrepit condition moldy smelly and barely cleaned anytime I was over there. Site pads are rip rap 1" to 4" size rock with no fine rock coverings, or in some areas smoother rock and dirt but nowhere close to flat or level. Water drainage when its raining is deplorable and you very well might be in a mud pit at your doorway.

It's sad there are no decent RV parks in the Cleveland area, just old campgrounds that have added hook-ups and market themselves as RV parks and now charge like they are RV Resorts. Reserve a space at your own risk and definitely verify where and what water source you are on. Bring plenty of filters and plan on sanitizing your system after staying there.

Local exploration: The region offers wineries and small towns within short drives. "We rode our bikes to town one night for dinner and ate outside at Eddie's Diner," shares a guest at Geneva State Park, highlighting the proximity to Geneva-on-the-Lake.

What campers like

Lake views: Sites with water views are particularly valued. At Lake Erie Bluffs, campers appreciate the unique perspective: "Able to watch Eagles soaring over Lake Erie listening to the waves hit the bluff below! Stayed at campsite B but we were able to look at A also!"

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer generous spacing between sites. "This is my favorite campground. It's small and lacks the amenities of most bigger campgrounds," writes a visitor about Lily of the Valley, appreciating its simplicity.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained restrooms and showers are frequently mentioned. One camper at Willow Lake Campground noted: "The sites are big with a range of surfaces available. Family run and immaculately kept. Grassy areas are cut and lush, showers and bathrooms are very clean and the layout is excellent."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance bookings, especially during summer weekends. At Perry Township Park, a visitor mentioned: "Called and the camp host was super helpful and friendly! Got in after dinner and luckily we were just car camping, because we got (in our opinion) the best site there!"

The park is very well maintained, has a nice playground and cute camp store. A good amount of secluded and shaded sites," explains a visitor about Punderson State Park.

Entertainment options: Campgrounds with organized activities keep children engaged. "Kids enjoyed the western quest searching for posts w symbols arranged around campground," mentions a visitor at Hidden Lakes Family Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites based on hookup needs and leveling requirements. "The lots are not even close the level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground," cautions an RVer about Punderson State Park.

Location considerations: Proximity to attractions and services influences site selection. At Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake, a camper appreciated that it's "close to many activities in Geneva on the lake, the strip! Nice landscaping and a great camp store at the entrance."

Seasonal planning: Weather conditions affect accessibility and comfort. "Not all sites are full hookup and 50 Amp. The street lights suck as they fully illuminated our sites," notes a visitor about Sun Retreats, suggesting light-sensitive RVers request sites away from facility lighting.
