Best Cabin Camping near Killbuck, OH

Mohican State Park Campground offers cabin accommodations ranging from basic camping cabins to larger riverside lodgings with kitchenettes. Located near Loudonville, these cabins feature amenities such as electricity, refrigerators, and microwaves in the more developed units. The campground's riverside cabins include comfortable beds, tables, and benches for organization. Some cabins offer separate sleeping areas with bunk beds that can accommodate up to four people. "The cabins at Mohican State Park are highly sought after for a reason--beautiful interiors, comfortable beds, and riverfront location."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available throughout the Killbuck region, with varying levels of amenities. Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins, Mohican Wilderness, and Whispering Hills all offer cabin rentals with different configurations. Most require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when tubing and canoeing activities are popular. Pet policies vary by location, with some campgrounds designating specific pet-friendly cabins. According to a visitor at KOA, "The KOA was what one expects of the KOA lots of features and not very secluded. The Kabins were lovely. The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room."

Most cabins include basic furnishings but require guests to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. As one camper noted, "Due to health code rules you have to cook and do food outside of the cabin." Nearby camp stores typically stock firewood, ice, and basic provisions, though visitors planning extended stays should bring supplies from larger towns. Many campgrounds feature on-site stores that deliver firewood directly to cabin sites upon purchase.

    Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins

    Family Friendly

Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for rent camping. Cabins are also available. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river. When you arrive everyone in the vehicle checks in, and then someone on a golf cart takes you to your spot. Campground has an indoor pool and hot tub. Also has pond with paddle boards and paddle boats that need to be reserved at additional cost. Quite a few playgrounds available and mountain bike trails. Small creek runs along the campground. All guests are given a wrist band that gives you a discount at the Trails End restaurant and at Mohican Adventures across the street.

    Buckeye Lake-Columbus East KOA

    Kabin 7 and Kabin 11

The KOA was what one expects of the KOA lots of features and not very secluded. The Kabins were lovely.

The design is nice as the bunk beds are in their own separate room. This means the back room will sleep four individuals. They also included little tables and benches so you can organize yourself in the room.  The front room has a large bed that sleeps two.  Then outside is the picnic table.  Due to health code rules you have to cook and do food outside of the cabin.

Our first cabin some of the light bulbs were dead and as a result they moved us to another cabin. Problem solved.

The bathrooms were very clean and the folks at the camp store were very helpful. I will say that my friend that took a shower was frustrated as one shower was scalding hot and the other was cold.  The floors were slippery as they didn't have a way to stop the water from going beyond the shower (no rim or lip).  She didn't get to use the Family Shower as you have to get the key from the store.  Shower time was usually before bed time with two little ones as they would get dirty playing during the day.  Since the camp store closes at 8 PM she would just use the standard shower with her kiddos. We thought this was a great feature and would have liked to get a look at the family shower set up.

At the camp store, they would drop off the wood via golf carts as you purchased it.  I was able to buy three bundles for $18.00 as it is cheaper that way.  I also purchased two bags of ice.

The cabin was fun and we were able to keep our trip simple by packing less due to the cabin.  Buckeye Lake State Park is close by and if you don't have a boat they really don't have a lot to offer non-boaters unlike other lake state parks.  We didn't see any trails.  We did go to the "beach" but opted not to swim. Our time was spent at the near by Dawes Arboretum and Newark's Earthworks (mounds).

**Will try to come back and upload more photos and videos later as tonight many of my posts are not fully uploading.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Winter Time But No Snow

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend.

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available.

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly.

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from.

    Cardinal Center Campground

    First camping trip 2020

This was our first camping trip after purchasing a new to us fifth wheel camper. We chose the Cardinal Camping Center because it was only 15 miles from our home. We arrived on Thursday afternoon registered and set up at our site. Staff was very friendly and helpful, we shared some fresh veggies from our garden as we had way too much for just us and asked the welcome center to tell people to help themselves to what ever they wanted. we then toured the campgroundand found the stocked fishing lake (catch and release) the indoor swimming pool. The camp also has some very nice cabins, no restrooms in the cabin but they are very close to the public restrooms and shower house. We then went over to the shooting center and tried our luck with some silliolet and metal targets on the pistol range. Thy also have trap and skeet available.

Our site had ful hook-ups 50 amp service with sewer and water picnic table and fire ring for $44 a night. All of the people next to us were very nice and everyone respected each other's sites.

I would go back to this campground again, we even extended our stay an extra day because we had such a good time.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Unexpected Treat in Central Ohio

As part of a nearly 200-mile bikepacking ride, this was our last stop! We spent 2 nights in their "Class B" area down in the Mohican River Valley and loved it.

The oddly named “Class A” camping area offers everything from full-hook up camping slots for campers large and small, as well as just electric sites and 10 “walk-in” primitive sites, and cabins -- all of which are reservable. This area has all the bells and whistles of a modern campground with an environmental learning center, a nice outdoor pool, clean showers and bathrooms, an extensive playground and hiking and mountain biking trails right out the front door.

The “Class B” area offers 25 primitive sites on a first-come, first-served basis. It is almost 6 miles by road from the “A” services, but only a 2-mile flatish hike along the river trail. At these sites, there are only pit toilets and a water pump. Each site has a picnic table and a small fire ring. There is also a large group camping area just a few miles away from the primitive “Class B” area.

Tubing and canoeing are available within the park, but there are also several canoe outfitters in the area which provide rental / pick up services. The sheer number of these businesses makes me think that summer time can be crowded!!

Beautiful shaded trails meander all throughout the park and they boast some of the most challenging mountain biking in the mid-west, so read your trail maps. Hiking, equestrian and winter snowmobile trails also offer some great opportunities to get out and stretch your legs throughout the year. There is also a safe and convenient, bike lane / bike path into nearby Loudonville, which has a small grocery story and the usual fast-food restaurants.

Note: The only reason why this park didn't get a 5 star was due to their customer service. It was absolutely lousy, confusing, and the young folks working behind the counter acted as if they didn't want to be there and/or hadn't been trained. We almost left, but since we had cycled 42 miles to get there that day, we chose to stay and enjoyed our time in their Class B sites.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    My Go-to Weekend Getaway

Saltfork is located about 45 minutes from my house, and makes for the perfect overnight trip.

There are tons of things to do, and lots of space in which to do them. My favorites includes hiking trails, and the lakeside dog park.

I stay in the primitive camping, it allows for more privacy and quiet. Although it also means you are relegated to the pit toilets. I personally don't mind them, but I know some campers will make the drive to the nicer shower house in the RV heavy side of the park.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, the fire rings in the primitive section need some work, as the grates are very old and small.

    Malabar Farm State Park Campground

    Rustic

I found Malabar Farm in Lucas, OH on my way home from Mom’s house. Never heard of it before and I have been this way for over 20 years now. Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! ( and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!) Not your typical going hiking kinda campground (there are trails but they are not “major”) you come here to step away from city life and tour a working farm. Ohio countryside at its best. Primitive camping with a gravel parking pad and water, fire ring, picnic table and hitching post. No reservations, this is a first come campground. There’s also a small rentable cabin open year round. Definitely worth a visit and very family oriented events. ( your teenager will roll their eyes at you but probably secretly enjoy the visit)

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Great park

This is a great state park campground. We stayed at an electric site. The spots are decent sized, plenty of restrooms, pool, playground and camp store that sells ice cream! Tubing down the creek next to the campground was super cool too. Cabins looked very nice and secluded. We hiked to the swinging bridge which was newly dedicated (May 2021).

Guide to Killbuck

Cabin camping near Killbuck, Ohio offers varied lodging options within the hilly terrain of Holmes County. The area sits at approximately 850 feet elevation with a climate that features warm summers and cold winters. Fall temperatures typically range from 40-65°F, creating ideal conditions for exploring the region's extensive trail systems.

What to do

Hiking trails and waterfalls: Mohican State Park Campground features multiple scenic trails leading to natural features. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve, no reservations," writes John H. at Mohican State Park Campground.

River activities beyond canoeing: The Mohican River offers fishing opportunities even in off-season months. "During the summer I hear it gets pretty busy with people tubing on the river," notes Renée C. The same visitor adds that winter brings different opportunities: "You will mainly see people fishing for trout."

Recreation facilities: Whispering Hills Jellystone RV Park provides land-based activities for families. "Great activities including mini golf, pool, jumping pad and frisbee golf," writes Kayla S. The park's fishing pond offers another option for recreation, as Emily notes: "My boys were able to walk across the road to get to the pond that was well stocked with fish."

What campers like

Primitive camping options: For those seeking more secluded cabin alternatives, Mohican Wilderness offers riverside sites. "We tent camped at one of the primitive riverfront sites. Site 810 in the Narrows. Our site was a little muddy and a little smaller than other sites but overall we were very happy with the campground," writes CampgroundKaren.

Winter camping availability: Some cabins remain accessible during colder months. "Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than expected this weekend," writes Andrea F. The same reviewer notes important winter facility information: "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open."

Cabin alternatives: Toodik Family Campground provides a range of camping options. "They have nice spots lower down that are right by the river," notes Kelly L. Joe I. adds: "First time here lots of seasonal campers but also seems to be alot of good tent sites on the edges of the campground."

What you should know

Seasonal weather considerations: Fall and spring visits require preparation for mud and changing conditions. "We stayed at camp Toodik over 4th of July weekend. The river was up, so we didn't get to go canoeing. It rained on us, and our campsite turned to mud, but we still had a wonderful time," reports Lane C.

Cell phone coverage: Connectivity varies significantly by location and carrier. "No cell service with Verizon at this park," notes Andrea F. about Mohican State Park Campground.

Navigation challenges: Some cabin areas have difficult access roads. Gregory L. from Wally World warns: "Getting here proved to be tricky, as it seems all of the GPS apps and my Garmin routed us on a county road that is not fit for RVs of any type... Do note the bridge you need to cross has a weight limit of 10 tons, so larger rigs will need to come up Wally Road from the south."

Tips for camping with families

Cabin site selection: Choose sites based on specific needs and noise levels. "We went for a Bluegrass Festival and spent most of the time in the campground because it rained a lot... Definitely a good place to go not super secluded tho, perfect for families!" recommends Katie Jo B. from Mohican State Park Campground.

Budget-friendly options: The area offers camping at various price points. "As far as tent camping goes, it does not get any easier than this. Everything is clean and well organized. Perfect for first time campers," writes Jenny K.

Activity scheduling: Coshocton KOA offers seasonal events for families. "When we went in October, they had trick or treating for kids, a site decorating contest, and a fall festival with two corn mazes, hayrides, Gaga ball, a corn pit, pumpkin painting and lots more," writes Kate C.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Check specific cabin locations for utility connections. "You do need to make sure to bring a portable tank if you are staying for more than a couple of days," advises Gregory L. about sites without sewer hookups.

Off-season considerations: Winter campers should verify which facilities remain open. Andrea F. notes: "The water at the full hook up sites are turned off" during winter months at Mohican State Park Campground.

Site leveling: Not all cabin and RV sites are naturally level. "We camped here off season and had the place to ourselves. We had a pull through site which was gravel," reports Renee L. about Mohican Adventures Campground. Another camper, Maria K., mentions: "Nice clean and friendly staff the only complaint is that the sites are not flat."
