Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Charles Mill Lake Park Campground

    mixed feelings 😕

Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us. Bath houses are clean and well maintained.  Our site was not clean and ready.  Picnic table looked like it was not cleaned since last season and the fire pit was full of rubbish.  Had campers behind us who played music so loud we couldn't hear each other talk.  I asked the gentleman to please turn it down and they did slightly. Another camper also asked them to turn it down and again it was very slight.  Well after midnight music continued.  No park ranger made rounds until Saturday morning and throughout the day.

The lake is gorgeous this weekend and we enjoyed riding bikes and walking the park.

May be back to try again.

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

    Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground

Nice Quiet Campground with a lot to Offer

We arrived Friday late afternoon and set up in the rain. Didn’t see much of the park on Friday,  but Saturday we went exploring and saw the marina, beach, horse camp area, and walked some of the bridle trails. They also have playgrounds that are open and some food trucks in case you don’t want to cook.

This is the second park we have stayed at that is part of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and so far I am impressed. Large landscape sites that are full hookup with large concrete pads. Each with its own picnic table and fire pit. They also have a boat dock for the campers to use.   The lightning bugs even put on a nightly show.

    Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA

    A Traditional KOA Experience

This was a Fall camping experience in a cabin as we knew it would be cold in the evenings.  We also had a non-camper with us so this was a nice compromise.  We had a cozy cabin with 2 bathrooms.  We also had a small kitchen where we could cook when we didn't want to cook over the fire.  This was another way for us to social distance as COVID-19 was still an issue.

I also took photos of the camping bathrooms as each KOA does it a little differently. You will notice that the bathroom is unisex.  It is a single bathroom (toilet and shower).  This is in the center of the campground.  The bathroom photos below are not of the cabin.

The cabin you see here is the Deluxe. "Deluxe Cabin(More than two Bathrooms), Patio Deluxe Cabin(w/ Bathroom)- Evergreen KL8-9-10 Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 tvs located in quiet corner with shade trees. Sorry, Not Pet Friendly! Linens are included in all seasons except Winter. Please bring pool towels." Taken from Reservation Email.

For 2 nights it totaled $153.00 which is a good price compared to other cabins we were looking at within the region.  We could have had others camping in the tent section of the campground so it is an easy way to have a mixed crowd for a camping outing.

I did type in some information into the Special Requests within my reservation booking online, as I had a question about who had to pick up the key as a friend lived closer.  No one responded and I had to call them.

Cabins Check in is at 3PM and Check out is at 12 PM

We were able to buy firewood from the KOA camp office. They bring it to your campsite and we were able to grill hotdogs and other food items on our camp fire.  Do read the general information closely and look at number 15 for a free scoop of ice cream.

https://www.whitehousefruitfarm.com/donuts  We did a donut run and explored the farm for our outing for the day.

We also spent the day checking out a local mill https://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/visit/places/mill-creek-park/lantermans-mill/

Guide to Doylestown

Camping options near Doylestown, Ohio range from rustic tent sites to comfortable yurts and cabin accommodations. Located in northeastern Ohio's rolling countryside, the area typically receives around 39 inches of precipitation annually with seasonal temperatures ranging from 20°F in winter to 83°F in summer. Campgrounds in this region feature varying terrain with elevation changes between 900-1,200 feet, creating diverse camping environments from riverside settings to wooded retreats.

What to do

Horseback riding experiences: Canton/East Sparta KOA Holiday (Bear Creek Ranch) offers on-site horseback riding that families find accessible. "Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly," notes Bradley B., making this activity suitable for beginners.

Water recreation options: At Clay's Resort Jellystone Park, water activities extend beyond basic swimming. "Fishing, volleyball, basketball, kayaking, zip lining in water with swimming... the activities here are endless," writes Chelsea M., highlighting the diverse aquatic offerings.

Hiking nearby trails: The region offers numerous walking paths, including those at Mohican State Park Campground, where campers access multiple trail options. "Lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. Free hike-in camping available here too," reports Nicole K., with many trails suitable for moderate fitness levels.

Fishing opportunities: Small lakes and rivers throughout the area provide fishing spots for campers. At American Wilderness Campground, the clean beach area overlooks fishing waters, though one visitor noted mixed results: "I tried fishing in the fishing lake and came up empty. At first I thought this was a 'me' problem, but I did not witness anyone catch a fish."

What campers like

Privacy and space: West Branch State Park Campground features secluded sites that appeal to those seeking quieter camping. "Very private sites," notes dan M., with another camper adding, "We were at site 160. No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site."

Clean facilities: Countryside Campground maintains high cleanliness standards that receive consistent praise. "This is easily one of the most beautiful and well kept campgrounds we've stayed at. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were nice and the pool was well kept," according to Kathryn P.

Year-round options: Evergreen Park RV Resort provides camping through all seasons, with amenities that function regardless of weather. "We camped here the second weekend in December and had the park mostly to ourselves. The game room was nice as well as the indoor pool," shares Andrea F., highlighting winter camping possibilities.

Riverside camping: Rivers Edge Camping Area provides water-adjacent sites that campers appreciate. "Right alongside the river with a picnic table and firepit. Portable toilet in parking lot," writes Whiskey B., noting the simplicity and proximity to water.

What you should know

Site conditions and leveling: Many campgrounds in the area require leveling equipment. At West Branch State Park, one camper explained, "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches."

Reservation requirements: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially waterside spots. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly," advises Alisa G. about West Branch State Park Campground.

Off-season limitations: During non-peak months, services are reduced but still accessible. One visitor to Mohican State Park Campground notes, "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off."

Budget considerations: Costs vary significantly between campgrounds. Clay's Resort Jellystone Park charges premium rates that some find excessive: "Crazy expensive (like $540 FOR 4 NIGHTS) but we figured we'd try it," while Rivers Edge offers free camping with basic amenities.

Tips for camping with families

Yurt options for beginners: First-time campers considering yurt camping near Doylestown find West Branch State Park Campground's structures accessible. "As far as tent camping goes, it does not get any easier than this. Everything is clean and well organized. Perfect for first time campers," explains Jenny K.

Playground accessibility: Countryside Campground features play areas suitable for younger children. "Playground was a hit for our 8yr and under kids," reports Joe F., with activities like mini-golf and crafts during seasonal events.

Swimming facilities: Several campgrounds maintain pools with varying schedules. At Clay's Resort Jellystone Park, the water recreation areas operate on timed schedules: "Zip lining in water with swimming (15 break every 45 min)," notes Chelsea M., suggesting families plan accordingly.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience higher noise levels from recreational vehicles. At Clay's Resort, one camper mentioned: "Bunch of drunks and kids speeding by on golf carts all hours of the night," indicating families seeking quiet might prefer other options.

Tips from RVers

Hookup configurations: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA provides reliable connections for RVs. "The site was level and easy to hook up to," according to Scott C., simplifying setup for travelers.

Extended-stay amenities: For RVers planning longer visits, laundry facilities become important. Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA offers "laundry 24/7" according to Jennifer H., who appreciated this convenience during a multi-day stay.

Site selection strategy: When choosing RV sites, consider location within the campground. At American Wilderness Campground, site placement affects experience: "We stayed in the primitive area and it was just ok. Only a port o potty was available in that area but you could walk to a different area for restrooms and showers."

Pull-through availability: Several campgrounds offer pull-through sites that accommodate larger rigs. At Countryside Campground, a visitor noted: "The pull thru sites were a tad small but nice and long. Even with the sites close together it was quiet and peaceful."
