Best Campgrounds near Hickory, NC

Hickory, North Carolina provides access to diverse camping opportunities across the foothills of western North Carolina. Campgrounds like Indian Springs Campground and Lake Hickory RV Resort serve as convenient bases for exploring the region. The camping landscape includes developed sites with full hookups for RVs, tent-only areas, and cabin accommodations. South Mountains State Park Family Campground and Lake Norman State Park offer year-round camping with varied amenities, including picnic tables, fire rings, and shower facilities. Several campgrounds in the area feature access to water recreation on nearby lakes and rivers.

Campground access varies significantly throughout the year with most developed sites open year-round while some, like Green Mountain Park, operate seasonally from April to November. Many campgrounds require reservations, particularly during peak summer and fall months when the Blue Ridge Parkway becomes a popular destination. The area's terrain ranges from gently rolling hills to more mountainous landscapes with elevations affecting temperatures and camping conditions. Cell service is generally available at most developed campgrounds but may be limited in more remote areas. One visitor noted, "The campground is very beautiful. You have to walk in but the park provides little carts and wheelbarrows. The sites and the bathhouse are very well maintained."

Campers report high satisfaction with waterfront sites along Lake Hickory and Lake Norman. The proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway provides opportunities for scenic drives and hiking trails accessible from several campgrounds. Sites along the parkway, such as Julian Price Park Campground, offer a more rustic experience with limited or no hookups but compensate with natural beauty and recreation options. According to one visitor, "We stayed at a site right by the river. The campsite is always clean and friendly staff are there ready to answer questions on where to hike, eat and about the wildlife." While some campgrounds feature modern amenities like WiFi, electric hookups, and shower facilities, others provide a more primitive experience focused on natural surroundings. Mixed-use campgrounds throughout the region accommodate various camping styles from basic tent sites to fully serviced RV pads.

Upper Creek, Pisgah National Forest NC

    Good spot!

Spent two nights here at a site right next to the creek, which was awesome listening to the running water as you fall asleep. Easy to get to, just a forest service road. A 4x4 makes it easy but there were minivans and junkyard beaters driving by. There are multiple sites along the service road and not too close to each other.

Old NC 105 - Dispersed Camping

    Great spot!

This is a great spot along a mountain ridge. The dirt road goes for about 13 miles. Would recommend a 4x4, but I’ve seen all kinds of vehicles travel the entire road from minivans to Honda accords. There are plenty of spots to choose from. Some have great views of the valley and table top mountain and others are just nooks in the woods. The sites are pretty spread out but there are a few within shouting distance (which could be annoying if the site next to you decides to bring a battery powered Sawzall to cut firewood at 2am). Some sites are right off of the road which could get annoying from all the traffic of people going to the hiking trails nearby. And there are spots tucked away a bit off of the road where you really don’t notice trucks and cars driving by. Awesome place for a weekend getaway! Definitely going to visit again.

P.S. only 4 stars because there are only about 3-5 sites with a great view!

Cobble Hill RV Campground (Formerly) Carolina Rose

    good stop & stay

campground being remodeled so bathhouses were a little walk away but not too inconvenient. pool was also closed for now BUT overall cute location. did park on site 59 (pull through) but was SUPER unlevel. cute pond and amphitheater too! has laundry as well.

coolest part about this spot is that it’s about a 10 min drive into Catawba college town which was a super nice area for us being younger. perfect mix of Boulder & Philly :)

hosts were SUPER friendly and nice :)

    Mountain River Family Campground

    Beautiful clean campground

We absolutely loved our stay here! This campground was destroyed by Hurricane Helene in 2024 and they have already built back a beautiful fully functioning campground

The sites are so clean with flowers planted around electric and water boxes, easy to access sites

I loved sitting along riverbanks having fire, reading my book while family fished

Owners were so nice and welcoming, gave us directions to access falls/overlooks

If we are ever in the area again we Will definitely be back!

    Boone KOA

A Perfect Stay at Boone KOA – Clean, Quiet, and Family-Friendly!

We recently stayed at the Boone KOA and couldn’t be happier with our experience! The facilities were incredibly clean—bathrooms, showers, and common areas were spotless and well-maintained throughout our stay, which made camping that much more comfortable.

What really stood out was the peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. Even though the campground was full with RVs and other campers, it was surprisingly quiet and respectful at night—ideal for families or anyone looking to relax.

The tent sites had tons of space between them, giving us both privacy and room to spread out, which can be hard to find at other campgrounds. We never felt cramped and had more than enough room for our gear, a picnic area, and space for the kids to run around.

There’s a lot here that people are looking for when choosing a campground: ✅ Level tent pads ✅ Clean restrooms and showers ✅ Quiet hours that are actually respected ✅ Close proximity to Boone and Blue Ridge Parkway hikes ✅ A friendly staff that makes you feel welcome ✅ Activities for kids and families without being too noisy

Whether you’re in an RV or pitching a tent, Boone KOA is a perfect base for exploring the High Country. Highly recommend and will definitely return!

    Spacious Skies Bear Den

    Bearden Campground

My family and I have been camping at Bearden since 1995 and it has always been great.  Getting to know the owners and all the people who ran the campground BUT now that is is apart of a large corporation or hedge fund and people looking to satisfy shareholders it's not as fun.  Sure we love the location (hint here if pulling a camper, don't follow the Bearden sign, go to Linville to get on the parkway and go left.  This way you will avoid the steep curvy road going up a mountain.) but it's ran like a corporation.  No more calling the campground office talking to the friendly owners, now you call to somewhere I believe in NJ and talk to a person to make reservations at one of the campground Spacious Skies have purchased.  So much for the family owned campgrounds who wanted to make money but provided a better atmosphere.

Guide to Hickory

South Mountains State Park stands at the intersection of foothills and mountains in western North Carolina, with elevations ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 feet affecting camping conditions throughout the year. Located within a 30-minute drive from Hickory, the camping options span from primitive backcountry sites to full-hookup RV spots. Water access is a defining feature of many campsites near Hickory, North Carolina, with options along Lake Norman, Lake Hickory, and the Catawba River.

What to do

Waterfall hikes: South Mountains State Park offers an 80-foot waterfall accessible via a moderately difficult 2.35-mile hike. "South Mountain State Park, NC From I-40 Exit 104, you twist and turn, up and down but keep a sharp eye for the small, brown State Park signs or you'll pass your right hand turns," notes a camper at South Mountains State Park Family Campground.

Mountain biking: The region offers extensive trail networks for cyclists of all skill levels. "Roughly 16.5 miles of mountain bike trails intermix with hiking and equestrian trails," according to a South Mountains visitor, while another camper at W Kerr Scott Reservoir Bandits Roost Campground mentions, "Rode the bike trails and loved it. Did some kayaking too."

Water recreation: Multiple lakes provide opportunities for boating, fishing, and paddling. At Lake Norman State Park, rentals are available for various watercraft. "There is a small lake on property to fish or swim. Has a pretty good market for the things you might have forgot," reports a visitor to Bear Den Family Campground.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers value the spacing at certain campgrounds. At Bear Den Family Campground, a visitor noted, "The campsites are good size. Playground on site for the kids. Shower house was clean but not very big."

Clean, modern facilities: Newer bathhouses receive frequent praise. "The restroom/shower house is a monstrous, mountain lodge style modern facility...very clean, spacious and well-stocked," reports a South Mountains visitor, while another at Lake Norman State Park mentioned, "I have camped all across the US and this was the nicest and cleanest campground I have ever been in."

Riverside camping: Sites along water are consistently rated highest. At Indian Springs Campground, a camper shared, "There is a path to the nearby river and the dog loved spending time in the water," highlighting the natural water access that enhances the camping experience.

What you should know

No-alcohol policies: Several parks strictly prohibit alcohol. "The no-alcohol policy at the park is STRICTLY enforced, so be careful!" warns a South Mountains visitor. Always check specific campground rules before arriving.

Seasonal closures: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Thousand Trails Green Mountain operates from April 1 to November 15, while W Kerr Scott Reservoir is open April to October.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies greatly by location. "No cell service is nonexistent. Your site will have a WiFi password for internet at the Visitors Center, but you need to be at or in the building for it to work," reports a South Mountains camper, while others mention paying for WiFi at some private campgrounds.

Reservation requirements: Peak season demands advance planning. "Being right on the Parkway was awesome and provided some great driving and hiking close by. The staff were very helpful," notes a Bear Den visitor who booked well in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Choose sites near play areas for convenience. At Julian Price Park Campground, a visitor shared, "We camped at C13 which was right across from the large playground in November. No noise issues, but it was dark by 6:30pm. May be different in the Summer."

Family-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with organized events. "This is an excellent family campground. They have plenty of activities for the entire family from basketball, volleyball, shuffle board, putt putt, a fishing pond, and a pool," reports a visitor to Cross Country Campground.

Tent pad sizing: Check pad dimensions for family-sized tents. "Even though we only stayed one night, we had a blast! Restrooms were very clean and well maintained. The tent pad was large enough to setup our 8 man tent and 2 man tent," notes a South Mountains visitor.

Tips from RVers

Steep access roads: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. Regarding Indian Springs Campground, a camper advised, "The road to the campground is easy to get to from I40, it's the turn onto Whitener Drive off of Costner Road that is not easy. Whitener Rd is fairly steep, but it starts off paved so it's not too bad."

Hookup variations: Full-service sites are limited in public campgrounds. Lake Norman State Park offers electric hookups but no sewer connections at campsites, while national forest campgrounds typically offer no hookups.

Dump station locations: Plan ahead for waste disposal needs. "Exiting the campground and driving up the steep hill with the camper in tow was a little challenging, but we made it out without trouble," reported an RVer at Indian Springs regarding accessing facilities.
