Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Granite Falls, NC

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Thousand Trails Green Mountain Park accommodates campers with pets at sites throughout their 1,200-acre property near Lenoir. This campground offers tent sites, RV spaces with full hookups, cabins, and glamping options where pets can stay with their owners. Dogs must be leashed while on campground property, including during walks on the extensive hiking trail system that winds through the mountainous terrain. Pets are not permitted in the clubhouse, pool areas, or playground facilities. The grounds are well maintained with designated pet waste stations strategically placed throughout the camping areas. Large dogs are welcome with no evident breed restrictions. Campers have noted the campground's family-friendly atmosphere extends to four-legged family members, with plenty of space for pets to exercise and explore.

Indian Springs Campground provides a quieter environment for campers with dogs, situated on a flat, secluded valley with river access. Dogs particularly enjoy the path to the nearby river where they can cool off and play in the water. The campground features full hookup RV sites on level gravel pads but does not offer bathroom facilities, so self-contained camping is necessary. The surrounding wilderness area offers good walking opportunities for pets, though owners should be vigilant about wildlife encounters common in the mountainous region. South Mountains State Park Family Campground, located about 30 minutes from Granite Falls, allows pets at both tent and RV sites, with miles of dog-friendly hiking trails directly accessible from the campground. Leashed pets are welcome on most trails throughout the park, providing excellent exercise options during camping stays. The park maintains strict quiet hours which help minimize barking disturbances between neighboring campsites.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Adult and Dog campground wonder

From the moment we arrived at the campground the manager "Larry"  ( a workamper) signed us in, show us our site on Wagging Tail Dr.  We arrived on their opening weekend the Owners provided BBQ meal and live music "Jose Wales" band.   It was a wonderful time.  As for the "Dog Retreat part - 18 acres of wonder open areas fenced in to keep you furry friends from running away, there is agility park, puppy park, the main dog park, a private park (single or you can invite), a Lure run, a Ball Park, and a Pond for those watery dogs.

Price for Fire wood - a little expensive and 10 lbs of Ice was reasonable.  There are fully fenced sites, a couple of sites with a fenced area.  The larges rig I saw in there was a Solitude at  38 ft.

Over all, if you want the peace and quiet in the North Carolina foot hills with your furry friend and have a good time.  This is the place to be.

One other note:  It is the only park in NC that is a dedicated dog campground.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Awesome for dogs and people!

We camped here back in August and had a blast! We brought our two dogs and they also had a great time. This site is very dog friendly (obviously), with many sites having their own fenced in yards. We opted for a site without a fence, which we regretted once we got there. The gravel at our site was painful for our dog’s feet and they had a hard time walking on it. The dog parks made up for this! There are multiple large dog parks located at the campground. The restrooms were awesome, but are single person use only. We felt like we were the only ones using them (that’s how well maintained they were). Campsites are close together but we didn’t mind. The staff was great, they helped us find our site and even helped us back our camper in. There was power and water hookup at each site. There is tons of stuff to do around the area too. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are right around the corner and SO FUN.

    Mountain River Family Campground

Pristine, friendly, communal, peaceful campground on the river!

This campground was pristine - from the moment we turned the corner, until the moment we left!

We met Kimberly within seconds of pulling on the property.  She was incredibly kind and made us feel at home immediately.  As tent campers, she told us our best choices were a 30 amp site on the river ($50) or a 30-amp site off the river ($44).  These prices are steep for tent camping, but include 2 adults, kids and pets.  Additional adults come with a fee, but we were happy the kids were included.  Not only were the pets included, but they have a dog park area that they can run free and stretch their legs!

We came into the cute little office where Kimberly gave us a campground map (which was painted by a resident camper glass blower) and told us about her property. Several items were on sale inside the store, including many shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc. They also sell kids fishing poles, stickers and even a fresh coffee cup machine.  They have recently renovated the bathhouse (wait until you see it!) they have a library with books and games, an outdoor sink to wash dishes etc. and even a laundry room that operates on the honor system.  How great is that!  I thought it was wonderful that we could wash a wet sleeping bag or a quick load of stinky hiking clothes if necessary!  Kimberly explained that they have a pretty good mix of short and long term campers (primarily RV's) and even a cute little cabin that can be rented.

Kimberly said that they choose not to allow on-line bookings to maintain the atmosphere that they desire.  You can call, or submit a request, but they want to have a conversation with you before booking.  The campground was calm, friendly and so so clean.  Campers were friendly, the campground host was as kind as could be, and so proud about her new bathrooms.  (See below).  This is the kind of campground we would feel good about our kids biking around in the evening as they chase fire flies and meet new friends!

The campground was located on the river, but the slope was challenging from several sites.  With kiddos, I may prefer a site closer to the road because it was nearly a flat walk out to the river.  We will surely be back!

Down by the River Campground - 55+

Everything you need in a campground

I’m not even sure you can call this a campground! A majority of those staying here were in top of the line campers. It truly felt like a community. There are two bath houses, a dog park, an activity center, and a river flowing behind the sites. It was beautiful and had a cheery atmosphere. They even had WiFi! I was definitely spoiled here.

Wagoner — New River State Park

    Beautiful campground.

We camped at the Wagoner access with our dogs over the weekend. The campground is very beautiful. You have to walk in but the park provides little carts and wheelbarrows. The sites and the bathhouse are very well maintained. The park host, Tom Keller, was just fantastic. Really helpful and super nice. There are also 2 beautiful hiking trails starting at the campground. I would definitely camp here again even if I have to say there are much more scenic places in this part of North Carolina.

Linville Falls Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

    Loved it!

Great campground! We are tent campers and loved our time here! There are A LOT of spots in a small area. That would be my only complaint if you want to call it that. The campgrounds clean and the owners are super nice and helpful. We have a dog and love the dog park! The bathrooms are very clean and nice! I would definitely recommend this campground!

Amazing Campground for Pups and Adults

We visited this park a few weeks ago and wished we could have stayed longer! It's a well-kept, clean park within approximately half an hour from Lake Lure (where Dirty Dancing was filmed). It is an adult only campground that is dog-centric... For us the best of both worlds! Includes several dog parks for large and small breads, and a pond in which the pups can swim and splash around. We've never been to a park like this one and highly recommend it if you can get in. We'll be back for sure!

    Mountain Stream RV Park

    Small, beautiful campgroud

Really beautiful spot. It's one small loop with around 30 sites, as well as 3 luxury yurts. Very level w/ nice gravel, fire pits & picnic tables. A nice big creek runs behind most of the campsites. There's a playground for the kids and a little fenced in dog park, too (it even has a nice dog wash station!). Beautifully landscaped with lots of flowers, bird feeders and little white lights at night. The bathhouse was clean and there's a nice picnic shelter. The camp store has basic necessities (even local, fresh eggs). Blue Ridge Parkway isn't far. We recommend the hike to Crabtree Falls! Only con is that the sites are very close together.

Guide to Granite Falls

Camping options near Granite Falls, North Carolina range from lakeside sites to mountain retreats at elevations between 1,000-1,400 feet. The area experiences moderate rainfall with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping season. Winter camping is available at select locations, though facilities may be limited from November through March.

What to do

Waterfall hiking trails: 2.35 miles to High Shoals Falls. At South Mountains State Park Family Campground, the Raven Rock Trail connects to the impressive 80-foot High Shoals waterfall. "What I like most about this park is they do close the gates at night (I can't remember exactly what time) but it definitely cuts down on random traffic," notes camper Rushell R. The full loop covers about 5.5 miles with nearly 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

Mountain biking on dedicated trail systems: The Warrior Creek area offers extensive mountain biking trails built by passionate volunteers. "Super mt bike trails that have been built and maintained by volunteers who really care and ride the trails often," writes Kim L. The trails connect to additional biking options at nearby Cub Creek, making it possible to spend several days exploring different routes.

Lake activities from swimming to fishing: Lake Norman State Park provides multiple water-based recreation options within 45 minutes of Granite Falls. "The beach is nice but gets very busy during the summer months. Lots of hiking trails, with lots of people using the grills etc.," reports camper I.R. The park maintains designated swimming areas with seasonal lifeguards and separate fishing access points.

What campers like

Creek-side sites for natural white noise: Steele Creek Park & Campground offers numerous sites directly adjacent to flowing water. "A16 was the camp spot. Checking in was as easy as pulling into the park, coming to a stop sign with a 'camp host' ask if we had reservations (we did) she brought us a little info on the park and directed us on where our camp site was," shares Mike R. The sound of the creek helps mask other campground noises.

Free camping with basic amenities: Budget-conscious campers appreciate Brown Mountain Roadside Campsites for its no-cost camping with vault toilets. "This campsite was a stop over for a trip out west.. and it was wonderful! Especially for being free. The trash was overflowing a little and the vault toilets obviously didn't smell the best but aside from that it was all we could ask for," notes Hannah L. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings.

Clean facilities even during peak season: Many pet friendly campgrounds near Granite Falls maintain high standards of cleanliness. "Very clean, great place for families, close to many lookouts, waterfalls, and hikes," writes Hayley B. about Spacious Skies Bear Den. The regular maintenance of restrooms and shower facilities rates consistently high in camper reviews across multiple campgrounds in the area.

What you should know

Cell service limitations in mountain areas: Connectivity varies significantly across camping locations. At Julian Price Park Campground, "No cell phone service, and gates to the park are locked up at 9pm so there's no getting in or out late at night," explains Jenni P. Some campgrounds provide WiFi near office buildings or in specific common areas only.

Gate closing times restrict late arrivals: Several campgrounds implement strict gate policies. "You can't check in late because the road in is through a neighborhood and is windy, narrow and dark early because of the surrounding area," cautions Kasey M. about Thousand Trails Green Mountain. Always confirm check-in procedures when making reservations.

Seasonal availability affects facility access: Not all campground amenities operate year-round. "The pools are closed for season, the activity room is closed due to Covid, and you can't rent any equipment for putt putt golf, tennis, or basketball right now," notes one camper. Call ahead to verify what facilities will be available during your planned stay.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds provide on-site entertainment: Spacious Skies Bear Den features multiple play areas for children. "Being right on the Parkway was awesome and provided some great driving and hiking close by. We camped at C13 which was right across from the large playground in November. No noise issues, but it was dark by 6:30pm," writes Charles S. This setup allows parents to monitor children from their campsite.

Swimming options for hot weather relief: Several pet friendly camping areas near Granite Falls include water access for cooling off. "This place is tucked away near a river, plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, plus a nice laundromat. One of the quietest RV parks I've ever been to!" shares Kathryn C. about Indian Springs Campground. Bring water toys and supervision for children.

Quiet hours enforcement varies: Family campers should research noise policies. "South Mountains is a great campground. Bath facilities are new and kept clean. Very quiet with NO cell service which is a big draw for us," notes Stephen M. Some campgrounds strictly enforce quiet hours while others take a more relaxed approach.

Tips from RVers

RV site grading and access considerations: Some campgrounds present challenges for larger rigs. "I was hesitant based on the reviews of 'steep grade' but found this entirely manageable (24' motor home RV). The grade is 7% and is managed through a long gentle slope in/out," shares Sara M. about Indian Springs Campground.

Bathroom availability for self-contained camping: Not all campgrounds provide full facilities. "I'm so glad I fixed my hot water tank the week before going because I didn't read the fine print that they do not have any restrooms! Full hookup though!" warns camper SouthernGinger about Indian Springs Campground. Always verify bathroom availability when booking if your RV lacks facilities.

Dump station locations and sewer hookups: Plan waste management accordingly. "This park has been my go to place when we need to get away. We have stayed here with a tent n now a camper. Clean sites n most sites r pretty level. Would give 5 stars but this park isn't full hookup," notes Connie M. about Bandits Roost Campground. Some campgrounds offer dump stations but no sewer hookups at individual sites.
