Campground elevation sits at around 760 feet, providing moderate terrain suitable for all skill levels.
What to do
Hiking and mountain biking trails: Lake Norman State Park has a network of trails that connect directly to the campground. "I have camped all across the US and this was the nicest and cleanest campground I have ever been in. Fantastic experience. I highly highly recommend!" notes Andrew G. about Lake Norman State Park Campground.
Fishing and wildlife observation: McDowell Nature Preserve offers excellent shoreline fishing access and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. "This campground is just minutes from Charlotte, but secluded from the city noise. Nice open spaces with shade. No views to speak of but several short trails and nice areas around Lake Wylie," reports Nora C. about McDowell Nature Preserve.
Swimming and beach access: Several campgrounds provide designated swimming areas during summer months. "Very clean and quite and very close to Charlotte. Nice, moderate hiking trails. Swimming and kayaking. You'll probably see deer but have never seen a bear," mentions Fletcher S. about Lake Norman State Park.
What campers like
Private, wooded sites: Campers appreciate the natural settings at many of the area's campgrounds. "The sites are very well taken care of. We chose to camp on one of the hotter days of the year so the tree shade came in handy to help keep us cool," explains Michelle L. about McDowell Nature Preserve.
Proximity to urban amenities: The campgrounds near Davidson provide convenient access to shopping and restaurants. "This is such a great place to go if you are wanting to escape from the city!" says Ezra M. about Lake Norman State Park, highlighting the balance between natural settings and urban convenience.
Quiet atmosphere: Many campers note the peaceful environment at Dan Nicholas Park. "We live just a few miles from Dan Nicholas, but love to 'get away' there any chance we get. Plenty to do, super nice folks, and roomy, shady sites," shares Lisa M.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer weekends often fill completely at the most popular campgrounds. "It was surprisingly busy, almost all sites occupied. There is not much space between the sides, but the park is huge and right at the lake," notes Birgit H. about a Thanksgiving weekend at Lake Norman.
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking during peak season. At Camp Wilderness Resort, "You can purchase Carowinds tickets right here and ride a shuttle all day long to the park rather than fight traffic. They enforce the rules really well so quiet time is actually just that," explains Nate G.
Cell service and connectivity: Service varies significantly between campgrounds. "Starlink was great for connectivity in most sites. Some sites are shaded around the edges and would be tough for starlink," reports Zachary H. about Statesville RV Park I-77.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Dan Nicholas Park offers extensive family recreation options. "This place is the best places for families to camp. There is a beautiful zoo, gem mining, a train ride, amazing fishing, a beautiful playground, and a carousel," notes Lisa L.
Swimming facilities: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Davidson have dedicated swimming areas. "The beach is nice but gets very busy during the summer months. Lots of hiking trails, with lots of people using the grills etc.," cautions I.R. about Lake Norman State Park.
Recreational activities: Cobble Hill RV Campground offers multiple family-friendly amenities. "We stayed here while visiting friends who lived in the Salisbury area and stayed in Cabin 1. The cabins are REALLY nice, I was very impressed. The pool was well located but busy, which was okay all the families and kids were having a great time," shares Julie L.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging terrain for larger rigs. "The park is lovely, with lots of trails and nature. Beautiful wooded setting. That said, there aren't many sites for RVs and some are not level - hard to get trailer level even with max leveling blocks," warns Kathy L. about McDowell Nature Preserve.
Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds offer complete utility connections. "We've loved staying at Yates Family Camping due to the flexibility and excellent communication of the owners. There aren't really any extras here but if you're just looking for reliable water/electrical/sewer and wifi near Charlotte this is a fantastic option," explains Mariah S.
Road access and site size: Carefully check campground specifications before booking. "Based on the previous reviews, this campground has come a long way. The road are freshly paved and the pull through sites are level. Some of the smaller sites appear to not be as well maintained but I'm sure this is on the list of the new owners," notes Ralph C. about Statesville RV Park I-77.
