Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island remains open year-round with electric and water hookups, though without sewer connections at individual sites. Smith Point County Park in Shirley features full hookup RV sites with 50 amp service and accommodates larger motorhomes on level sites. "Sites were level, pretty spacious and easy to back into," noted one RV camper about the nearby Indian Island County Park, which offers electric hookups but requires trips to the dump station for longer stays.

Seasonal availability varies significantly across these RV campgrounds, with some parks closing completely during winter months. Multiple dump stations are available throughout the region, though their accessibility can be challenging for larger rigs. One traveler mentioned that "the dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig" at a Suffolk County campground. Cell service fluctuates by location, with some sites reporting excellent connectivity while others experience dead zones. Most RV parks in the area are pet-friendly with designated dog walking areas. Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Hither Hills State Park Campground

    Nice

Stayed in May, June, and November 2023. The location is its best feature. The beach is just over the dunes. Village Pizza is remarkably good.

Had to take a star off for no hookups. Generator hours are limited. There are spigots located down the middle of the rows. Go on google maps to find a spot near a spigot.

Cell signal varies wildly by spot. B17 no prob at all. G14 spotty. F20 total dead zone.

Bath house on the west side is eh. The east side- beautiful.

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

Guide to Wading River

RV camping near Wading River, New York offers varied terrain options with numerous county and state-managed campgrounds throughout Long Island's eastern region. Wading River sits at approximately 92 feet above sea level in Suffolk County, experiencing moderate rainfall year-round and summer high temperatures typically reaching 80-85°F. Cell service varies considerably between campgrounds, with stronger signals closer to developed areas.

What to do

**Wildlife viewing: The beachfront campgrounds provide excellent wildlife observation opportunities. At Smith Point County Park, campers report regular deer sightings. "Truly great spot. Amazing sites with plenty of room, though they are close together. But was worth it for the amenities and fantastic views," notes one visitor who stayed on the bayside.

**Kayaking: Located 5 minutes from Rocky Neck State Park Campground, the 4-mile river boat launch offers water access for paddlers. "A lot of you children. Short walk to Rock Neck beach. Nature Center has movies on weekends for kids," explains a visitor who found the kayak launch required driving, not walking.

**Swimming: Many campgrounds feature swimming areas, both pool and natural water options. At Aces High RV Park, guests appreciate the "clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court." Some campsites even offer "a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!"

What campers like

**Level sites: Campers consistently praise campgrounds offering concrete pads or level sites. A visitor to Aces High RV Park mentioned "Clean, well-maintained, and level site with concrete pad and patio (I love a clean, level concrete pad!). Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should (other parks should come and take a look at how to do this right)."

**Water views: Waterfront sites remain highly sought-after for motorhome travelers exploring Wading River's surrounding areas. One reviewer described "our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view."

**Security: Many campgrounds maintain regular security patrols. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "Rangers came around checking on everyone often so it really did feel incredibly safe." This makes the park especially popular for families and solo campers.

What you should know

**Site privacy varies significantly: While some campgrounds offer spacious sites with natural borders, others have minimal separation. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "The campsites are very close together without any defining borders so everybody just walks across each other site's to get to a different one, a path, the bathroom, etc."

**Seasonal amenities: Pool availability changes throughout the camping season. "The pool is very clean as are the bathrooms and showers," notes a visitor to Crocker's Boatyard, where summer visitors can cool off after a day of exploration.

**Bathroom conditions: Facilities vary widely between campgrounds. While some offer well-maintained bathrooms, others require improvement. A camper at Cathedral Pines County Park mentioned that "sites are great overlooking the bay. Bathroom lights are bright. 10 would be better."

Tips for camping with families

**Look for recreation programs: Several campgrounds host organized activities for children. "On one visit there was a magician performing for the camp goers. I've even been there while there was a philharmonic concert near the campground," shares a visitor describing Heckscher State Park Campground's family-friendly programming.

**Consider cottages for young children: For families with very young campers, cottages provide comfort while maintaining the camping experience. "This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for 'camping'. She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!"

**Secure belongings: Secure bikes and valuable items, especially in more populated campgrounds. One visitor warned, "Please lock up your bikes cause high schoolers will go over the bridge and steal you bikes or alcohol if they aren't locked up at night. It's happened to me."

Tips from RVers

**Accessibility: For larger RVs, advance research prevents access issues. "Many pull-thru sites, maybe 20 back ins on a pond," notes a visitor to Aces High RV Park, which accommodates various RV sizes year-round.

**Water/electric availability: Most campgrounds near Wading River offer water and electric hookups, though full-service sites are limited. At Totoket Valley RV Park, a visitor found "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table."

**Propane availability: On-site propane service is rare but available at select locations. A visitor notes, "Clean, family friendly campground. Pet friendly with plenty of area to walk. Close to I-95 and 15 minutes from the beach. Fishing areas for the kids. Spots are well organized and no issues with hookups. Propane is available at the store."
