Rogers Rock Campground offers numerous waterfront sites along Lake George, situated 7 miles south of Ticonderoga. The campground spans across varied terrain with both wooded and open areas, where campsites range from water-adjacent spots to more secluded inland locations. Visitors can access the area year-round, though the official camping season runs from mid-May through early October when weather conditions are most favorable.
What to do
Lake activities at Rogers Rock: Swim at the lifeguarded beach area that's groomed nightly or rent kayaks for about $10-15 per day near the beach area. "The beach has a lifeguard to watch over the swimmers. Dogs are not permitted on the beach. Also close to the beach area kayaks and canoes are available to rent for about $10-$15 per day," shares John W. about Rogers Rock Campground.
Hiking from campground: Access trailheads directly from your campsite at Wilderness Campground, eliminating the need for additional travel. "You can hike Algonquin, Iriquois, Wright Peak, and Mt. Jo all right from the campground. There are only 32 sites so it never felt too crowded," notes Hannah O. about her stay at Wilderness Campground at Heart Lake.
Tubing adventures: Rent tubes and float down the Schroon River at Medcalf Acres for a refreshing summer activity. "We stayed at this campground in a travel trailer for one week spent hours floating down the river biking took day trips to Lake Placid and Burlington Vermont lots of seasonal campers but for a day camping the sites are really nice would highly recommend," writes johanne Y. about Medcalf Acres Riverfront Campground.
What campers like
Waterfront access: Stay directly on Schroon Lake with your own outhouse and nearby shower facilities for a semi-primitive experience with amenities. "We stayed on their 'rustic campsite', which was a short 900 ft hike from the car. Our camp spot had a picnic table, fire, grate and own outhouse. We also used the showers on the main site, which was a short drive away. Could see the lake from our site and the spots were relatively spread out," describes Tracy B. from her stay at Scaroon Manor Campground.
Off-grid with amenities: Find clean facilities with thoughtful touches like dishwashing stations and beach areas at Heart Lake. "I was absolutely impressed with the restrooms, dishwashing station, and beach area. Despite rather high density of sites they are well designed and the campground is quiet and dark at night for good rest!" explains Tigan W.
Weekday visits: Experience significantly less crowding and noise by scheduling your glamping in Severance during weekdays rather than weekends. "This place is packed on the weekends. If you want to avoid the rush of campers, definitely try to make the trip on a weekday. Sitting by the lake is really relaxing when you're all alone!" advises Carrie J. from Rogers Rock.
What you should know
Varied site quality: Sites at Rogers Rock vary considerably in size, privacy and accessibility. "Some water sites have a steeper path to the water. Cell service is iffy," notes Lauren S., while Kim T. adds, "The site was much smaller than expected, but luckily we only needed space for one tent."
Off-road challenges: Access to Crane Pond requires four-wheel drive vehicles due to unmaintained roads. "Please note Crane Pond Road from the lower parking lot to the pond itself is NOT maintained and often gets very muddy. 4WD is required, if you go back there without it your day is gonna suck," warns Nicole T. about Crane Pond Dispersed Site.
Road noise: Several campgrounds in the Severance area sit near main roads with audible traffic. "The campground is right off of a pretty busy road so it wasn't as serene & quiet as one might like," shares Bella J. about Eagle Point Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Family activities: Choose campgrounds with programmed activities for children during summer months. "The staff makes it fun for the kids. They have a heated swimming pool or you can float/swim in schroon river," explains Jason R. from Medcalf Acres.
Kid-friendly beaches: Look for beaches with shallow entry points and provided toys for children. "Beach is always clean and well kept with toys for the kids kept there on the beach for all kids to use," notes Sheri C. about Scaroon Manor.
Seasonal considerations: Plan luxury camping in Severance around the mosquito season, which peaks in early summer. "Large spots new and clean restrooms. Just next to the lake for a swim. So many mosquitos," warns Julie V. from Scaroon Manor.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Choose carefully from campground maps as many sites have challenging access or uneven terrain. "Roads in the park are confusing because none are parallel or perpendicular so we had to go slow just to make sure we didn't miss a turn in the RV. Luckily, the receptionist in the office highlighted the route we needed to take to get to our site which was very helpful," shares Nancy W. about Lake George Escape Campground.
Advance planning: Reserve waterfront or premium sites months ahead, especially for luxury accommodations near Severance. "I was lucky to book a site (#68) on the water. Beautiful views and morning sun," mentions Lauren S. from Rogers Rock.
Hookup variations: Not all sites offer full hookups, so check specific amenities when booking. "No full hookups. Poor cell reception," notes Angelina B. about Scaroon Manor Campground.
