Best Campgrounds near Round Top, NY

The Catskill Mountains region surrounding Round Top, New York features several established campgrounds catering to various camping preferences. North-South Lake Campground, Whip O Will Campsites, and Brookside Campground represent some of the primary camping areas, offering tent and RV sites with varying levels of amenities. Most campgrounds in this region accommodate both tent and RV camping, while several also offer cabin rentals. The majority of properties provide electric hookups, drinking water, and fire pits, with many campgrounds situated near water features or mountain trails.

Most campgrounds in the Catskill region operate seasonally, typically from May through October, with exact dates varying by location. Winter camping options are limited due to harsh conditions and facility closures. "The campground is very nice I love going there. But we warned if you have a site on the water the sound carries and you will get told to keep it down," notes one camper about North-South Lake. Roads throughout the area can become difficult to navigate during and after heavy rainfall, particularly at higher elevations. Cell service can be spotty in more remote areas. Many campgrounds require advance reservations, especially during summer weekends and fall foliage season when sites fill quickly.

Wildlife encounters and scenic mountain views constitute common experiences at Catskill camping areas. North-South Lake Campground receives particularly high ratings for its hiking accessibility and lake views, with multiple trails leading directly from the campgrounds. According to one visitor, "Clean bathrooms and hot water showers, great view of the lake, kayaking, close to excellent day hikes." Whip O Will Campsites earns praise for its recreational amenities including a pool, playground, and fishing pond. Sites range from secluded wooded spots to more open, social camping areas. Campgrounds closer to Hunter and Windham mountains tend to be busier during winter months due to skiing tourism, while summer sees higher occupancy rates throughout the region, particularly at waterfront locations.

    North-South Lake Campground

    scenic campground

This is a truly beautiful and scenic campground, easily one of the best places we have visited in New York State. The campsites are well laid out, the surroundings are stunning, and the entire campground is very clean and well maintained. We visited in October, and it was pleasantly uncrowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful fall scenery made for a perfect camping trip. I'm not sure how busy it gets during the peak summer season, but our autumn visit was fantastic. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back.

Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground

    Quiet place with great location

Good, quiet place to spend the night, but there are a few things to keep in mind. This is primarily a climbers’ campground, so by around 9 PM most people are already asleep and the lights are off. If you’re looking for a peaceful and quiet night, that’s definitely a plus. Sites 8–15 were our favorite because they are away from vehicle traffic. Site #8 is probably the best of them. Site #15 is only about a 2-minute walk from the parking area at a brisk pace, but that’s without carrying gear. If you have a lot of equipment or heavy bags, these sites may not be the most convenient choice. The showers cost $0.25 per minute, and don’t be surprised if you end up sharing the changing area with another person. Overall, this is a simple, quiet place to sleep and rest for the night rather than a destination campground with lots of amenities

Max V. Shaul State Park Campground

    Site 13

Our site had a lot of space. Watched a video on YouTube that was a walk through of each site. So peaceful. Lots of good hiking. Sinks for dishes, clean bathrooms and showers.

    Devil's Tombstone Campground

    Entitled Arrogant Staff

We have camped for years all over the Northeast and have never experienced campground staff as rude, patronizing, and overbearing as we did at Devil’s Tombstone Campground. It felt like our group was constantly being watched and corrected over every minor thing imaginable instead of simply being treated like paying guests trying to enjoy the weekend. The campground itself was disappointing, but the staff attitude was by far the worst part of the experience. Unless you want to be nitpicked every time you do literally anything, then you might not want to camp here.

We do not recommend this campground to anyone, unless you want to have anxiety when they drive by every 5 minutes to check on every minor thing. By the way, the walk from the check in shack to the end of the campground is at most 0.2 miles.

    Devil's Tombstone Campground

Experienced Campers — First Time Ever Leaving a Negative Review

FYI this is my first time ever writing a negative campground review, but this experience deserves one. Our large family group stayed at Devil’s Tombstone Campground over Memorial Day weekend, and despite having camped dozens of times over the years, this was by far the worst campground and staff experience we’ve ever had.

When we arrived there was no caretaker present, no cell service to call the posted number, and we were later condescendingly told we “should have checked in” and “should have knocked”— both of which we did. We were then told the posted number was “only for emergencies,” despite nowhere stating that. The first caretaker who checked us in was pleasant, but after that it felt like staff constantly monitored and corrected our group over extremely minor issues: partially parking on grass, briefly parking near the bathroom walkway, plugging into an outlet near the restroom during 40-degree rainy weather, hanging signs, and even checking our tarp lines on trees. Many of these rules were not posted anywhere.

After someone plugged into the bathroom outlet because they were freezing (there was no sign that said you couldn't and it was not listed in the rules), the bathroom power was shut off entirely, leaving the bathrooms without lights at night, which created an obvious safety issue. Around the same time, a camera suddenly appeared near the outlet area, which felt excessive and uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, staff spent hours mowing, weed-whacking, and chain sawing during the middle of Friday on Memorial Day weekend while simultaneously nitpicking campers over every little thing.

The final straw was being told we could not use a fully enclosed propane fire pit with no embers during cold, windy, rainy weather. After expressing frustration over the constant nitpicking, forest rangers were called on us the next morning. Staff reportedly told them we had garbage and food everywhere, which was completely false. Thankfully the rangers themselves were respectful and seemed to quickly realize we were simply a group trying to enjoy our weekend.

The campground itself was also very misleading compared to online photos. The “lake” is more like a shallow pond unsuitable for meaningful fishing, kayaking, or swimming. The supposedly stocked creek running through the campground was completely dry, there is no running water in the bathrooms, and a main road cuts directly through the campground with traffic flying by at highway speeds.

We still managed to have fun because we enjoy spending time outdoors together, but we would absolutely not return or recommend this campground.

Jug End Dispersed — Appalachian National Scenic Trail

    Dispersed Camping?

Between Sage's Ravine and Jug End Road there are five backcountry campsites on the Appalachian Trail. Sage's Ravine Laurel Ridge Race Brook Falls (with a shelter) The Hemlocks (with a shelter) Glen Brook (with a shelter) After descending Mt. Everett, you descend to Guilder Pond State Park. It is a day use park with trash cans and in season it also has a porta potty and a few picnic tables. No camping besides those already mentioned, which are all A.T. campsites. Jug End Road allows overnight parking (often used by folks hiking the A.T.) but I wouldn't classify that as dispersed camping unless you just need a place to pull over and sleep for a night. Each site mentioned, with the exception of Race Brook, is no more than .2 off the A.T.

Guide to Round Top

Catskill camping near Round Top offers a mix of wilderness experiences within a 2,000-foot elevation landscape dominated by mixed hardwood forests. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-80°F, while spring and fall camping can see overnight temperatures drop into the 30s. Most campgrounds in this region remain open from May through mid-October, with limited winter options.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Woodland Valley Campground serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Slide Mountain Wilderness. "A lot of the hiking nearby is also relatively easy and includes the newly opened (as of 2016) viewing platform for Kaasterskill falls, which is minutes down the road from the campground," notes Jessica W. about North-South Lake Campground.

Water activities: Swimming options vary across the best places to camp near Round Top. "I go there almost every year to go swimming with my family and friends and it's always a good time," shares Lizz H. about North-South Lake. For fishing enthusiasts, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds offers creek access. "We were over in 'Lover's Lane' so it was isolated on a separate loop... But super nice being right on the creek—we took our chairs and plopped down in the water," explains Kyla B.

Family recreation: Beyond natural attractions, several Round Top camping options include built amenities. "The campground has a little arcade, a nice lake, and playground," writes Nicole S. about Whip O Will Campsites. Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds offers "a few playgrounds, a great pool and a lot of amenities," according to Richard V.

What campers like

Privacy levels: Site spacing varies significantly among Round Top area campgrounds. Kenneth Wilson Campground features "large and heavily wooded" sites according to Kyla B., who adds it "seemed family friendly" despite being busy. At Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground, Katherine P. notes, "Campsites are fairly close together with a variety of levels of privacy. Ours allowed you to be pretty far back from the road for more privacy, but some of the other sites were literally next to the road."

Facility maintenance: Clean bathrooms and shower access matter to many campers. "The bathrooms were very clean and had showers, which we did not expect," reports Brittany W. about North-South Lake Campground. At Whip O Will, Ted and Angela "do a fantastic job of keeping the place running like a top. Always clean and always improving services," according to Michael M.

Unique accommodations: Beyond traditional campsites, some properties offer alternative lodging. "They have RV sites, yurts, custom furnished treehouses with electricity, beautiful tiny homes with outdoor living spaces, completely remodeled vintage airstreams, and gorgeous private cabins!" says Jeff & Steff about Treetopia Campground.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, securing a campsite requires planning. For Devil's Tombstone Campground, "for reservation you have to book 2 days ahead. Do not come during the summer because it is swamped here and it the busiest time," advises Phillip L.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies widely across Round Top camping areas. At Kenneth Wilson Campground, Sam L. warns "there is NO cell service here. You have to drive about 5 minutes towards Hunter to get service." Similarly, Erica H. notes about Woodland Valley: "no cell service. My GPS on phone was able to track though."

Access road conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. Woodland Valley Campground has a "long, narrow, and winding road from Route 28" according to Gary G., though he emphasizes this "should not keep you from camping there!" Devil's Tombstone has sites "10ft off main road," according to Zane, who cautions about traffic noise.

Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "There's a few playgrounds, a great pool and a lot of amenities," notes Richard V. about Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds. At Brookside Campground, Michael A. reports, "I went last year with my kids they loved the arcade small but it's a camp ground the playground area was nice."

Child-friendly swimming: Swimming access varies in accessibility and features. Lizz H. calls North-South Lake "one of my favorite swimming spots." Kenneth Wilson Campground has "a lake on site with swimming," according to Kyla B., who adds, "We happened to spend the weekend on a day with free canoe/kayak rentals which was great!"

Animal encounters: Some properties offer unique farm animal interactions. At Brookside Campground, David R. mentions a "small farm right next to our site, goats, cow chickens, ducks, geese." These interactions can provide educational opportunities for children while camping near Round Top.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-service sites are limited in the Round Top area. At Rip Van Winkle, Janly P. recommends: "I highly recommend the deck sites to people small to moderate sized RVs and for large rigs they have some big sites." For Kenneth Wilson Campground, Katherine P. notes, "We had a 3-day weekend tent camping at this site from July 24-26 2020, at site 58 on Loop C."

Site levelness: Terrain varies significantly among Round Top camping areas. C O. shared about Rip Van Winkle: "Very easy to level and setup on #7. Full connections. Pay showers and laundry onsite." Consider requesting specific site numbers when making reservations.

RV size restrictions: Devil's Tombstone accommodates smaller units only. Sam L. explains, "We had a VW Westfalia, which we had no trouble pulling into our site. If we had something bigger, it might have been an issue." Always call ahead to confirm your specific RV length can be accommodated at your chosen campground.
