Sampson State Park offers glamping options with a variety of accommodations beyond the lakeside cottages. These modern options include both tent sites and cabins within loops 1-4 that provide more privacy from the main campground areas. Less-trafficked sites 300-320 sit beneath mature trees and offer more seclusion than the waterfront options. The park maintains year-round availability for select camping units, with seasonal considerations affecting rates that range from $28-45 depending on amenities and location.
What to do
Hiking near waterfalls: Watkins Glen State Park Campground features numerous hiking trails beyond the famous gorge route. "Watkins Glen was absolutely beautiful. The sites are quite wooded with plenty of space in between. We stayed in a 30 ft. motorhome, and the roads within the campground were kind of tight to get through with trees and curves. The gorge trail is a MUST," notes Laura L.
Military history exploration: The Naval Training Center history at Sampson extends beyond the museum displays. The grounds contain numerous historical markers indicating former building locations, training areas, and naval installations. According to Brian O., "It was a Naval training base during WWll. About 45 minutes from Rochester and about hr and half from Syracuse. It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era."
Finger Lakes wine tours: Flint Creek Campgrounds serves as a central base for exploring the region's wineries. Located 30 minutes from Penn Yan, the campground offers a quiet retreat after winery visits. "I like Flint Creek a lot. Its quiet and peaceful. However, don't expect any cell phone service. I've had friends who climbed up on top of their RV and still, no signal," writes Lela S.
Swimming and beach access: The swimming areas at Cayuga Lake State Park feature roped-off sections with graduated depths appropriate for different swimming abilities. "This was a perfect weekend getaway. Kayaking in Cayuga Lake was not lacking some beautiful views. The sites are slightly close together but everyone was incredibly respectful and quiet by 10pm," reports Laura Nicole A.
What campers like
Spacious, private sites: Sned Acres Campground offers sites with good separation between camping units. "We really enjoyed our stay. They were so helpful as we were first time campers. We loved the friendship bread when we arrived. Conveniently located close to lots of wineries," reports Debbie C., highlighting the special welcome amenity for new guests.
Recreational facilities: Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill provides diverse outdoor recreation options beyond standard campground amenities. "Great secluded tent camping (recommend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space. Camper camping is close to everything, but less privacy. Numerous pavilions that are wonderful for parties or weddings," notes Sarah C.
Clean bathhouses and facilities: The maintenance standards at campgrounds near Penn Yan receive consistent praise. At Watkins Glen State Park, Lori F. mentions, "Friendly staff, good patrols at night to keep people from being too noisy, tent sites are nice and shaded. Some of the shower houses are better than others. Wonderful hiking at the gorge and it was beautiful."
