Penfield camping destinations offer year-round recreation opportunities within 30 miles of Rochester. The area sits at approximately 400-600 feet elevation with a climate that sees frequent rain in spring and snow in winter. Most campgrounds in the region provide electric service with varying amperage options, while full hookups are concentrated at private RV parks.
What to do
Hiking trails: Webster Park features wooded paths for nature enthusiasts. "This was our first trip here. It was nothing short of perfect. Camp sites are wooded and private. Very quiet and peaceful," notes Amanda M. about Webster Park.
Water recreation: Lake Bluff RV Park offers proximity to water activities. "We had a huge site near a little stream, overall the campground isn't very big with lots of seasonsals. Lots of activities for kids, and just around the corner from chimney bluff state park which are a must see!" explains Keri about Lake Bluff RV Park.
Golfing: Some campgrounds integrate golf courses into their facilities. "This spot is all right, but it's not really the vibe for weekend campers. It's definitely more of a 'locals only' kind of feel as it is a country club and golf resort primarily," says Mariah G. about Hickory Ridge Golf & RV Resort.
What campers like
Family-friendly environments: Southwoods RV Resort is known for accommodating families. "Southwoods is a beautiful campground and accommodates campers of all ages. 2 well kept pools, playgrounds, laundry facilities, mini golf, soccer, basketball," reports Hope C. about Southwoods RV Resort.
Clean facilities: Many rv parks near Penfield maintain high standards of cleanliness. "Bathrooms were very clean. Quiet campground. Lots of plays areas for kids. Weekend sites would be pretty tight together if they were fully booked," notes Sydney W. about Southwoods RV Resort.
Proximity to attractions: South Shore RV Park's location allows access to waterfront views. "Quite campground, well maintained, clean bathhouse, definitely will stay again," says Jeff F. about South Shore RV Park, one of the few campgrounds open year-round.
What you should know
Site spacing varies: Some campgrounds have tighter arrangements than others. "We stayed at Southwoods while visiting the Rochester, NY area and exploring attractions in the area. The campground is about 20-25 miles from downtown Rochester and located in a quiet rural setting surrounded by farmland," explains Nancy W.
Seasonal operations: Most RV parks around Penfield, New York close during winter months. "We go to webster park family campground several times a year for the past few years. Usually sometime in early May and in late October with an occasional day or two mid summer," shares Scott C.
Connectivity challenges: Cell service can be problematic at certain locations. "This is a nice little park. I've stayed four times in 2021, for a much as 2 weeks at a time. Cell phone coverage is poor by Verizon and T-Mobile, and there is no WiFi, and no camp store," reports Carl C. about Webster Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose sites near play areas for convenience. "Nice central playground and bathroom/shower house. There is hiking in the park, lots of nice woods, big field for playing games/sports," says Scott C. about Webster Park.
Weekend activities: Red's Twilight on the Erie RV Resort offers regular entertainment. "Live music on Friday Night (weather permitting) and plenty of activities for the family on the weekends. We stayed here during our home renovations and fell in love with the place," shares Rachel T.
Safety considerations: Some campgrounds enforce speed limits to protect children. "The speed limit is 5 MPH and they mean it.... Kids on bikes and having a good time in the enormous play area and the pool far enough from the campsites but close to the store," explains Rachel T. about Red's Twilight.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Come prepared with leveling equipment. "Almost all of the sites are not even close to level. Not a big issue with a fifth wheel but a real hassle with a motorcoach," advises Donna C.
Site selection strategy: Lake Bluff RV Park offers varied camping experiences. "Have been to lake buff twice this year and will definitely be back next year! The owners are so personable, accommodating and kind! Large wooded sites are our favorite as well," recommends Victoria.
Hose length: Water connections may require extra equipment at some rv parks near Penfield. "You need a long hose for fresh water in the RV. No sewer sites," cautions Janelle G. about Webster Park.
