Best RV Parks & Resorts near Malverne, NY

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City sits across from Manhattan with 90 sites offering electric and water hookups. The campground functions as a gravel parking lot with security fencing around the perimeter and spaces arranged tightly together. "This RV park is literally just a parking lot and quite expensive for what it is," notes one camper, but its proximity to NYC transportation makes it valuable for city exploration. Skyline RV Camp offers 28 non-waterfront sites with electric hookups but no water at each site. Additional RV-friendly options include Nickerson Beach Park Campground in Lido Beach, open April through November with full hookup capabilities and designated big rig spaces, though reservations are difficult during peak season.

Sharp turns and narrow streets around several parks require careful navigation for larger motorhomes, particularly when approaching Liberty Harbor where construction often compounds access challenges. The dump station at Liberty Harbor frequently develops lines during busy checkout periods. Proper planning includes securing reservations well in advance, especially for Liberty Harbor where rates exceed $100 per night. Most parks enforce quiet hours and provide 30/50-amp service, though water hookups vary by location. According to one visitor, "Getting in and out is not for someone in a brand new 45' travel trailer. Know your rig and know how to maneuver it in tight spaces." Cell service remains strong throughout the region's RV parks, with most allowing pets but requiring they remain leashed.

    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

    large wooded sites

This campground has all pull-through sites. Nicely wooded with water and electric. Be sure to bring extra hose because the water spigot is a distance from the electric. sites are level and well maintained. They also allowed us to put the car tent on the same site as a friend's camper. There's a nice lake to kayak or paddle boat on. each site has a fire pit, picnic table and garbage can

    Heckscher State Park Campground

    Great Late Fall Weekend Cabin

This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for "camping". She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!

    Pros

    • Modern facility with full kitchen accessories (coffee maker, plates, wine opener, can opener, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, toaster, oven), sponge/dish liquid. Microwave.1
    • Clean interior, clean campground
    • modern cottage with propane fireplace, WiFi access, bathroom with shower, large screened in porch with bar height table and 4 chairs, deck with chaise lounges, two bedrooms (1 with 2 twin beds, 1 with full), coach, chairs, plenty of clean storage places and hooks. You have everything but bedding, food, drinks, and personal items.
    • cottages far enough away from each other
    • fire ring with Adirondack chairs
    • dumpster and recycling within walking distance
    • lots of bone dry firewood around for campfire
    • walkable beach
    • beautiful
    • wildlife: deer, rabbits, turtles

    Cons

    • a bit pricey
    • playground is driving distance not walking

Beaver Pond Campground — Harriman State Park

    Quiet, off-season, mid-week retreat

We stayed here on a Thursday night in September prior to taking off backpacking. The campground was clean and quiet. RV hook-ups, tent platforms, and rustic tent sites were available. Our rustic tent site had a few good options for pitching a tent, as well as picnic table and fire ring.

Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great. Expect to purchase firewood, although scrounging for kindling was possible. Facilities were clean and what you'd expect from a campground.

    Would definitely return!!

    Pine Cone Resort

DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER STAYING HERE

If I could review this with a negative star, I would... We spoke to personnel when we made reservations, and were promised a pull through, full hook up that would fit my truck and 34' trailer. Far from that, we could not open our awnings, and site was far from level. Let alone we can not pull through fully. Worst site we have ever been on. Dirty, holes in road, mud everywhere, tree limbs falling on my new truck and new trailer. Garbage in fire pit that they would not clean and dog poop on our site. To make it worse I am disabled with lung disease, and I had truck squeezed on our site, hanging over on empty site next door. Owner called threatening to have me arrested, charge me for 2nd site and demanded we leave campground immediately. What a joke! I would never ever stay here again. BTW, WiFi and cable don't work at all. $62.50 a night is ridiculous.

    Wildwood State Park Campground

    Camper side review

Stayed here for two nights with my popup and was surrounded by large motor homes/RVs. sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to ‘camp’. Bathrooms and showers were not really clean, which was surprising because most people used their personal bathroom/shower in their RV. It is close to the beach, but a very small and rocky beach. Overall, I don’t think this was the best place for us.

Close to the beach and clean facility

This is a popular site in the peak season. The beach is in a walking distance. You can swim or fish there. This camp site has a relatively new and clean facility.

There are many farms near by where you can get fresh veggies and fruits.

Guide to Malverne

RV camping options near Malverne, New York center around access to New York City while providing necessary amenities for large rigs. The region sits at sea level with moderate temperatures ranging from 30°F in winter to 85°F in summer. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from April through November, with few year-round options due to northeastern weather patterns.

What to do

Beach access at Nickerson Beach Park: Located in Lido Beach, this campground sits steps away from Atlantic Ocean beaches. "Right on the beach! Great spot to camp at if the waves are pumping at Lido Beach on Long Island," notes one visitor to Nickerson Beach Park Campground. The campground features a newly constructed path to the beach area.

NYC sightseeing from Jersey City: At Liberty Harbor RV Park, campers gain easy access to Manhattan. "We brought scooters & had a great stay! Plus you can see the Statue of Liberty from there!" shares one camper. The area offers convenient transportation options including a ferry one block away and the PATH train about eight blocks from camp.

Hiking trails at Harriman State Park: Several trail options ranging from easy to challenging exist within this park. "There are several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections of the trails were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable," notes a visitor to Turkey Swamp Park, which offers similar terrain features.

What campers like

Waterfront views at Skyline RV Camp: The Brooklyn waterfront location provides direct views of the Manhattan skyline. "It's essentially a spacious parking lot with electrical pedestals but the view of the skyline across the water is spectacular and there's a metro station within a 10-minute walk," notes a guest at Skyline RV Camp - Waterfront.

Private wooded sites at Turkey Swamp: Unlike the parking lot style setups closer to NYC, this park offers genuine forest camping. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest," shares a camper at Turkey Swamp Park. The campground maintains dirt roads throughout and features pull-through sites in most loops.

Affordable camping near attractions: Some campgrounds offer reasonable rates compared to city hotel costs. A visitor to Beaver Pond Campground notes, "Camping for just $15. This is an off-grid camping experience. You can use your generator at certain hours." These lower rates provide budget options for travelers wanting to explore NYC without hotel expenses.

What you should know

Limited tent camping options: Most locations near Malverne cater primarily to RVs. One camper at Nickerson Beach Park explains, "Nickerson Beach only offers camping for RVs. I do not have an RV so I was unable to spend the night." Tent campers should specifically verify tent accommodations before booking.

Reservation challenges for popular parks: Securing spots requires advance planning. "It's all but impossible to get an RV spot there from Memorial day to Labor day. Still, it is a clean and well run campground," shares a visitor about Nickerson Beach Park Campground.

Seasonal closures affect availability: Most campgrounds operate limited seasons. Beaver Pond Campground runs "April 22 to October 9" according to their listing, while Nickerson Beach operates "April to November." Winter camping options are severely limited in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks offer dedicated play areas for children. "They have a playground. I've been going here every summer since 2019 after it re-opened. Each site has a picnic table and grill," notes a visitor to Heckscher State Park Campground. Some campgrounds feature multiple playground options both within camping areas and in day-use sections.

Safety considerations: Urban-adjacent camping requires awareness of surroundings. "The area feels safe and is pedestrian friendly, even at night (we were there Halloween night and we took our kids out trick-or-treating just outside the gate)," reports a family staying at Skyline RV Camp in Brooklyn.

Wildlife awareness: Some parks have active wildlife that requires proper precautions. At Harriman State Park, a visitor notes, "Be Aware of Bears!! Welcome to Bear Mountain grumbles the park ranger as he sits in complete darkness!" Proper food storage is essential at wooded campgrounds in the region.

Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: RVs face specific routing issues near NYC. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV Life Pro and not Waze," advises a camper at Liberty Harbor Marina. Many routes into NYC have height restrictions on parkways that prohibit RV travel.

Water connection requirements: At Turkey Swamp Park, a camper advises: "Bring a LONG water hose. Nice lake. Showers and washers and dryers." Some campgrounds position utilities awkwardly, requiring extra hose length to reach connections.

Sewer connection positioning: Many sites have challenging sewer hookup locations. A Turkey Swamp Park visitor notes, "Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains." This requires special attention when connecting sewer systems.
