Malverne, New York camping options extend into Suffolk County and neighboring New Jersey, with most locations within a 45-60 minute drive. The eastern Long Island sites feature pine barrens and hardwood forests, while western options near NYC offer marina settings with urban skyline views. Winter temperatures average 25-40°F, with summer reaching 70-85°F, making spring through fall the primary camping season.
What to do
Beach access from camp: At Wildwood State Park Campground, campers can walk to the beach on the Long Island Sound. "The North Shore and South Shore are pretty different. This site gives you the North Shore experience with high bluffs, sandy calm beaches along the Long Island Sound, and views of CT across the water," notes Amber A. The beach is rocky, so bring appropriate footwear.
Fishing opportunities: Blydenburgh County Park offers fishing in its lake. "Great park with a nice 7 mile loop around the lake with decent fishing. Lots of horses and dogs on the trail," reports Erik R. The park office sells bait for those who need it.
Hiking trails: Turkey Swamp Park features multiple hiking trails through wooded areas. "There are several short (longest one is 2.5 miles) hiking trails that are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections of the trails were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable," advises Lee D. The park also has a fitness trail for those wanting a more structured outdoor workout.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Turkey Swamp Park receives praise for its generous campsites. "Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy. A lantern hook, picnic table, and fire ring complete each site," notes Lee D. The campground features pull-through sites in a wooded setting.
NYC proximity: Liberty Harbor RV Park stands out for its location near Manhattan. "This is all about location. The closest RV park to NYC. Pick one of the larger end row sites to get a little extra elbow room," advises Keith and Tia S. Transportation options include ferries and the PATH train within walking distance.
Clean facilities: At Blydenburgh County Park, the bathrooms and overall maintenance receive positive comments. "Good campground. Good hiking, clean, close facilities and well maintained. Lake is great and only a short walk, but no swimming," says Michael G. Campers report regular ranger patrols to ensure the grounds stay clean and safe.
What you should know
Fire pit policies vary: Several parks have unique fire pit rules. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "There are no fire pits on any of the sites, although I learned afterwards that they do allow you to bring your own metal fire pit as long as it is elevated off the ground," explains Ellen C. Wildwood State Park requires renting or bringing your own fire ring.
Site privacy differences: Campgrounds offer varying degrees of separation between sites. At Heckscher State Park, "There is no distinguishing separation between each site nor a designated driveway for your car- you merely pull up on the grass. People park wildly all over the place," notes Ellen C. For more seclusion, Turkey Swamp Park offers better site spacing.
