    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

Watkins Glen State Park, New York

Campers arriving at Watkins Glen State Park are immediately captivated by its dramatic gorge scenery, where 19 waterfalls cascade through narrow stone walls. Their campsites are nestled among hardwood forests, offering a perfect balance of sunlit clearings and shady retreats. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, making it easy to prepare meals after a day spent exploring the park’s famous Gorge Trail. The park’s facilities blend rustic charm with modern comforts: clean flush toilets, hot-water showers, and convenient potable water stations. Hiking enthusiasts appreciate the interconnected trail system, which includes the popular Rim Trail for elevated views of the gorge, as well as more secluded footpaths through hemlock groves. Families particularly enjoy the nearby swimming pool and easy-access picnic areas overlooking Seneca Lake. To simplify travel logistics for out-of-state visitors, many campers opt to pre-book an airport transfer so they can arrive at Ithaca or Elmira–Corning Regional Airport and head straight to the park without the hassle of car rentals. Those planning to explore multiple stops along the Finger Lakes often choose the provider’s reliable city-to-city rides for comfortable, door-to-door transportation between destinations. All in all, Watkins Glen State Park delivers an unforgettable combination of awe-inspiring gorge hikes, well-appointed campsites, and family-friendly amenities. Campers seeking both adventure and relaxation will find this New York treasure hard to surpass.

    Flint Creek Campgrounds

Great activities, friendly hosts, full hook ups!

Close to wine country you will find this gem of a family campground. Dog and kid friendly with activities such as wagon rides, arts and crafts, movie night and various themed weekend events. The hosts were super friendly and welcoming during our entire stay. An easy back in site with full hookups (B10) backed against a row of trees and a field that provided much entertainment of squirrels and birds. There is a camp store with very reasonable prices and accepts credit cards. Wood ($4) and ice ($2) are also for sale. There are two small cabins to rent along with a couple of family tent sites. The bathrooms/showers were clean near the camp store. Amenities include a pool, mini golf ($1/person), two playgrounds, horseshoes, a recreation center with games and movies, basketball and shuffle board. There are many seasonal campers at this campground, but all seemed friendly and welcoming as well. It truly seemed like one big happy family there.

Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill

    Wonderful!

Great secluded tent camping (recomend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space. Camper camping is close to everything, but less privacy. Numerous pavilions that are wonderful for parties or weddings. Stunning overlook that is breathtaking (also great for weddings). Hiking, bike trails, fishing pond, playground, open fields for sports, much more!!! Great for photo shoots, weekend stress getaways etc. I live close by and visit a few times a month.

    Conesus Lake Campground

Camping with amenities, close to fun

This is your typical Mom and Pop family campground, there are rules to follow but they do not hinder on your experience. They have a well stocked camp store, boat rentals, golf cart rentals, an indoor heated pool, jump pad, playgrounds, a hiking trail and frisbee golf. The bottom portion of the campground has mostly seasonal campers and cabins. You do have to go up a pretty steep hill to get to the 'transient' camping section, but there are many pull through, level, full hook up sites to choose from. ( We had site 250 and really liked it) The bathrooms were toilet/shower combos and were very clean. Attractions close by is a drive-in with 4 different screens, many places to eat, parks ( Vitale Park was really nice), a fun center with mini golf, go carts, batting cages, laser tag and arcade. We also experienced the local flea market in Avon, NY. It's HUGE!

Shady Pines Camp at CBG Farm - CLOSED

    Rustic and beautiful

After meeting up with the owner we went down to the parking area. A dirt trail and park on the side in the grass. You have to walk in about 2 minutes on a trail. The owner has a golf cart with a small wagon and transported our stuff to the campsite and back when we left…he was really nice and very helpful.the trail opened to open grassy areas with surrounding trees where we pitched our tent…a small table and fire ring w grate provided. Also firewood.you get water back up at the barn but the owner was nice and brought us a 5 gal. Jug. Pond stocked with fish…catch and release. We caught some nice bass and bullhead…kids had a blast. Past the pond is the cabin with sitting spots and an open cement fire stove and oven also a fire pit. Theres an outhouse behind the cabin w a seat over a bucket w chemicals…papertowels tp hand sanitizer and disenfectant wipes nicely provided. We did have cellphone signals. Overall a really nice spot to relax and commune w nature.

    Pinecreek Campground

Beautiful Park, beautiful area could be so much more with a little effort!

Pinecreek is a beautiful park in a great area 10 minutes from downtown Ithica New York and Lake Cayuga. The area has everything you could possibly want or need. Fabulous State Parks with spectacular waterfalls, a farmers market right on the lake front, Cornell University and so much more. That being said it may be the reason the campground doesn't offer any planned activities. They do have a swimming pool and what appears to be a large clubhouse/meeting area that is not or was not used while we were there, nor were any activities publicized. They do have a small arcade but it did not stay open past 8 pm and did not appear to be air-conditioned.

Our campsite was a full hookup with a large grassy area for setting up our outside chairs and picnic table. Although we enjoyed our stay we felt it was a bit overpriced for not having much to offer. They also have a very long list of rules & while they do allow pets there is a list of breed restrictions you need to be aware of before booking a reservation. They also charge for electricity on any stays one week or longer which we had not encountered previously at campgrounds where we have stayed.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but not sure we would stay again.

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

    Kid friendly, beautiful.

We (family of 5) stayed at Watkins Glen State Park 8/12/20 to 8/16/20. We were tent camping in Seneca Village and had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL site. There was a good mix of tent and RV campers. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were nice and warm. Quiet hours are enforced from 10pm to like 7 or 8am. Firewood and ice are available at the ranger station. Each “village” has a playground for the kids in addition to the large playground near the pool at the entrance to the campground. We didn’t use the pool (though it was open) but got plenty of use out of the playgrounds. The nicest playground was in Tuscarora Village. Tuscarora and Seneca had very nice sites. Onondaga felt like the sites were a little closer to each other or closer to the road. I did not explore any of the other villages but most sites are wooded and offer privacy and seclusion. We had an amazing time hiking and exploring the area and can’t wait to go back.

Lakeview Camping Area — Fair Haven Beach State Park

    We decided to move on

We drove through here but didn’t stay. The non-electric sites were pretty much all on hilly areas, most would be impossible for an RV to get level, though there were a few that would have worked.

We drove through the “bluffs” loop (electric sites), thinking it would be beautiful and look out on the water, but it was a nightmare for us, with huge RVs jam packed side by side like a parking lot.

The lakeview loop was nicer, but still too many RVs all in a row. There are also cute cabins here for rent.

When we were there the city was under a water advisory- all water had to be boiled before any kind of use. There was a dump station, and trash bins but no recycling (I’m disappointed in the lack of recycling at NY State campgrounds!) So, we moved on to Selkirk SP and stayed there instead.

Guide to Lyons

Located in the northern section of the Finger Lakes region at approximately 400 feet elevation, Lyons experiences warm summers with average highs of 82°F in July and cold winters with significant snowfall. Most cabin rentals in the area open seasonally from mid-April through October, with several parks offering extended fall dates.

What to do

Hiking opportunities: 10-minute walk from campsite at Watkins Glen State Park Campground leads to spectacular gorge views. "The gorge trail is a MUST. Definitely go check this campsite out!" notes Laura L. Trails vary from easy to moderate difficulty with the Rim Trail offering elevated views.

Water recreation: 15-minute drive from most camping cabins reaches multiple lake access points. "Kayak launches and boat marina nearby" at Red's Twilight on the Erie RV Resort, according to Rachel T. Many campers bring fishing gear for catch-and-release options in stocked ponds.

Educational experiences: Free military history at Sampson State Park. "There is a museum, boat launch, pavilions, and ice cream shop on the camp ground," writes Kate W. The naval museum contains authentic WWII artifacts and exhibits documenting the site's history as a training base.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Daily maintenance at most cabin sites keeps bathrooms and common areas tidy. "The campground is well maintained and has clean restrooms," reports Amy T. about Junius Ponds Cabins and Campgrounds. Regular cleaning schedules posted at most locations.

Spacious sites: 30+ feet between units at several parks provides privacy. "Most sites are pretty spacious," mentions Amanda K. about Sampson State Park. Cabin guests particularly appreciate the buffer areas between structures compared to tent camping areas.

Family programming: Weekend activities often included with cabin stays. "They offer themed weekends and have activities for kids," notes Amy T. about Junius Ponds. Common events include outdoor movies, nature walks, and seasonal celebrations.

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Limited winter availability affects cabin camping near Lyons. "Canandaigua-Rochester KOA" operates "Apr 1 to Oct 31," while some parks close earlier in October. Advanced weather protection features vary significantly between cabin types.

Reservation policies: 1-2 night minimums apply at most locations, with holiday weekends requiring longer stays. "Reservations recommended especially during summer weekends," advises Jim C. about Junius Ponds Cabins and Campgrounds.

Site variations: Significant differences exist between cabin types, even within the same park. "We had a huge site near a little stream," shares Keri about Lake Bluff RV Park, while others note cabins can be closer together. Research specific cabin numbers when booking.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple play areas available at several parks. "Nice playgrounds," mentions Amanda K. about Sampson State Park Campground, with one visitor noting that "My teenagers even enjoyed the playground!" at Junius Ponds.

Kid-friendly activities: Scheduled programming occurs regularly. "Live music on Friday Night (weather permitting) and plenty of activities for the family on the weekends," reports Rachel T. about Red's Twilight on the Erie RV Resort.

Safety considerations: 5 MPH speed limits enforced at family-oriented parks. "The speed limit is 5 MPH and they mean it.... Kids on bikes and having a good time in the enormous play area," notes Rachel T., highlighting the family focus.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Check before booking as terrain varies significantly. "Almost all of the sites are not even close to level. Not a big issue with a fifth wheel but a real hassle with a motorcoach," warns Donna C. about Red's Twilight on the Erie RV Resort.

Interior space: Limited cabin sleeping areas require careful planning. "The roads within the campground were kind of tight to get through with trees and curves," shares Laura L. about Watkins Glen State Park. Many cabin campers recommend bringing minimal gear due to compact interior layouts.

Pool access: Varied availability and policies across properties. "This campground offers a well maintained-non heated pool although costs $2 per person to use even for campers," mentions Jim C. about Junius Ponds, while others note some pools don't open until late June.
