The Galway area sits at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, with most campgrounds positioned between 700-1,100 feet elevation. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-85°F, with cooler nights even in peak season. Fall camping extends into mid-October at most locations, with seasonal closures typically beginning after Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend.
What to do
Kayaking on Sacandaga Lake: Northampton Beach Campground provides direct lake access for water activities. "Large sites on huge lake perfect for kayaking. Few bugs," notes Dr. Angie M. The lake size accommodates both beginners and experienced paddlers.
Hiking nearby trails: Multiple options within 15-20 minutes of most Galway area campgrounds. "[Moreau Lake State Park has] over 20 miles in hiking trails, this is one of the nicest parks, I've visited," shares Michi P. Many trails connect to larger Adirondack trail systems.
Swimming options beyond lakes: McConchie Heritage Acres Campground offers a swimming pool alternative when lakes are too cold or crowded. "No lake but has a swimming pool," explains Katie A. The pool typically operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.
Miniature golf: Family-friendly activity located near campground entrances. "Couple nice general stores that are reasonably priced AND a miniature golf place right outside of the entrance," reports Dan H. from Northampton Beach. Most courses charge $6-10 per person.
What campers like
Spacious waterfront sites: Northampton Beach Campground receives consistently positive feedback about site size. "There are so many really nice sites at this campground. A lot of water sites that are very spacious with a beautiful view," writes Alyssa C. Water sites typically cost $5-10 more per night than standard sites.
Quiet camping options: Less crowded alternatives exist for those seeking peace. "A nice little campground. Pool was clean. Nice layout and spacious sites," says Miqayel A. about Whispering Pines Campsites. Weekdays and shoulder seasons (May/June and September) offer significantly quieter experiences.
Fenced dog areas: Arrowhead Marina & RV Park features dedicated pet spaces. "We were next to a little fenced in area for dogs that our dog loved," shares Tina. These designated areas provide safe off-leash options while respecting campground rules.
Natural swimming areas: Several campgrounds maintain beach areas with gradual entry points. "Nice sandy beach with lifeguard hours," notes Amber A. about Moreau Lake State Park. Lifeguard schedules typically run from 10am-6pm during peak season.
What you should know
Bathroom facilities vary widely: Condition and availability of facilities differs between campgrounds. "The bathrooms were pretty awful though. The showers were broken and there was no hot water the entire 5 days we were there," reports Alyssa C. from Northampton Beach. Calling ahead about current bathroom status is advised.
Campground crowding during events: Lee's Park Campground becomes extremely crowded during concerts. "If you're staying here for SPAC shows, I would pack your earplugs, hand sanitizer, and toilet paper, arrive as early as possible," advises Suzy W. Traffic congestion can add 30-60 minutes to arrival/departure times during events.
Water level fluctuations: Lake depths change throughout summer. "Pay attention to the time of year as the water level can drop considerably over the summer," warns Robert L. about Northampton Beach. Late August typically sees the lowest water levels, affecting boat launches and swimming areas.
Speed limit enforcement: "Speed limit of 5mph is very strictly enforced and god forbid you forget to hang your parking pass in your vehicle," notes Miqayel A. about Whispering Pines. Violations can result in warnings or being asked to leave without refund.
Tips for camping with families
Best family-friendly dog sites: Moreau Lake State Park Campground provides excellent options for families with pets. "Nicely treed sites and cabins with a pretty lake. Hiking, biking, swimming, boat/canoe/paddleboard rentals. No hookups but does have dump station. Pets allowed. We really like it here," shares Nancy K. Loop A offers the most spacious sites for families with dogs.
Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain play areas for children. "There is also a nice playground for kids to enjoy," reports Nancy W. about Moreau Lake State Park. Most playgrounds accommodate ages 2-12, with separate areas for different age groups.
Activities for rainy days: Indoor recreation options exist at certain locations. "Activities offered in recreation hall," notes Katie A. about McConchie Heritage Acres. Most campgrounds stock board games and puzzles for guest use during inclement weather.
Multiple bathroom locations: Larger campgrounds offer strategically placed facilities. "Rather than having everyone in the same shower or bathroom area, there are multiple buildings with these services so there isn't overcrowding," explains Daniel B. about Northampton Beach.
Tips from RVers
Site access challenges: DevilDoc Campsites provides electric hookup but requires planning. "We used his power source so we were near his home and site was level for the travel trailer. Slept great each night!" shares Rosie Lon S. Calling ahead about access routes prevents difficult maneuvering situations.
Dump station availability: Not all dog-friendly campgrounds offer full service options. "Only con was that they were limited on water so could not dump tanks during our stay, had to travel to another place, a little hassle," notes Rosie Lon S. about DevilDoc. Several public dump stations exist within 15 miles of Galway.
Back-in site considerations: Tree placement can impact larger rigs. "Our campsite was spacious but required some maneuvering to avoid scraping trees with our RV," explains Nancy W. Many campgrounds can accommodate up to 40-foot rigs, but site-specific limitations apply.
Weekend arrival timing: Friday check-ins encounter the most congestion. "The roads are narrow and many should be one way, but are not. It would have been impossible many places in the grounds to pass a rig on the road," warns April L. Arriving midweek or before noon on weekends significantly improves the experience.
