Best RV Parks & Resorts near Bohemia, NY

"Sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to 'camp'," noted one visitor about Wildwood State Park Campground. Motorhome and RV travelers stop near Bohemia, New York for full-service and partial-service sites. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers 90 sites with electric hookups, water connections, and a sanitary dump station. Smith Point County Park in Shirley provides year-round access with full hookup sites that accommodate big rigs. Cathedral Pines County Park features electric hookups and water connections but lacks sewer hookups at individual sites. Heckscher State Park Campground, open seasonally from May through September, provides electric, water, and sewer connections for RVs.

Fall through spring seasons offer less crowded conditions at most RV parks in the region. Several parks require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when beach access is a popular amenity. According to one visitor, "The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig" at some facilities, making trip planning essential for larger motorhomes. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, though some parks have limited or no WiFi access. Most facilities allow pets with standard restrictions, and several parks provide trash collection, showers, and restroom facilities. Driving routes may require careful planning, as one reviewer noted: "Google Maps doesn't have an option for large vehicles so I made my way manually and the trip took an extra hour or more to arrive than planned."

    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

    Heckscher State Park Campground

    Great Late Fall Weekend Cabin

This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for "camping". She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!

    Pros

    • Modern facility with full kitchen accessories (coffee maker, plates, wine opener, can opener, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, toaster, oven), sponge/dish liquid. Microwave.1
    • Clean interior, clean campground
    • modern cottage with propane fireplace, WiFi access, bathroom with shower, large screened in porch with bar height table and 4 chairs, deck with chaise lounges, two bedrooms (1 with 2 twin beds, 1 with full), coach, chairs, plenty of clean storage places and hooks. You have everything but bedding, food, drinks, and personal items.
    • cottages far enough away from each other
    • fire ring with Adirondack chairs
    • dumpster and recycling within walking distance
    • lots of bone dry firewood around for campfire
    • walkable beach
    • beautiful
    • wildlife: deer, rabbits, turtles

    Cons

    • a bit pricey
    • playground is driving distance not walking

    Wildwood State Park Campground

    Camper side review

Stayed here for two nights with my popup and was surrounded by large motor homes/RVs. sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to ‘camp’. Bathrooms and showers were not really clean, which was surprising because most people used their personal bathroom/shower in their RV. It is close to the beach, but a very small and rocky beach. Overall, I don’t think this was the best place for us.

    Wildwood State Park Campground

Close to the beach and clean facility

This is a popular site in the peak season. The beach is in a walking distance. You can swim or fish there. This camp site has a relatively new and clean facility.

There are many farms near by where you can get fresh veggies and fruits.

Guide to Bohemia

Near Bohemia, New York, campers find a mix of county and state parks offering varying levels of amenities and access to both bay and ocean shores. The elevation throughout the region remains relatively flat, with most camping areas situated within 100 feet above sea level. Weather conditions vary seasonally, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and frequent coastal breezes affecting camping comfort.

What to do

Beach access from camp: Smith Point County Park provides direct beach access with minimal walking required. According to one camper, "Literally steps to the beach. Although most sites have views of the bay, some are blocked by seagrass."

Wildlife viewing: Cathedral Pines County Park offers nature encounters in wooded surroundings. "Usually quiet, occasional deer. Be sure to lock food away as the raccoons are pretty invasive," notes one visitor.

Family recreation: Many parks include playgrounds and open spaces for family activities. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "There is a playground just for the campground... There are also hiking trails and a place where you can rent a kayak."

What campers like

Ocean proximity: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites. At Smith Point County Park, "Our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view."

Clean facilities: When campgrounds maintain their amenities, visitors notice. One camper mentioned, "The bathroom building is in the middle of the campground and was clean and had plenty of stalls. Potable water is available at regular intervals, about at the corners of each group of four campsites."

Weather variations: Shoulder seasons offer advantages. "The bugs are gone, the days are warm and the nights are chilly. All in all it a great place to camp," writes a camper about Smith Point in October.

What you should know

Site boundaries: Many campgrounds in the area have undefined boundaries. At Heckscher State Park Campground, "The sites are designated by printing on the roads and do not have clear boundaries between them... there aren't clear paths to the restroom building so it's not uncommon for people to cut through the edges of sites to get there."

Reservation requirements: Most parks require advance booking. At Smith Point County Park, restrictions apply: "ONLY DRAWBACKS, 1- YOU HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF SUFFOLK CO, NY, 2- ONE WEEK STAY AT A TIME. PERIOD."

Fire pit policies: Fire regulations vary by location. Battle Row Campground has specific rules: "There are NO fire pits, you must bring your own. Fires are allowed but you must have a fire container or bucket for your fire off of the ground."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Battle Row Campground provides family-friendly amenities: "The park is clean the bathrooms are well maintained and there is a playground for the kids. Each site is set back off a common area so there is plenty of privacy."

Entertainment options: At Heckscher State Park, special events occur seasonally: "On one visit there was a magician performing for the camp goers. I've even been there while there was a philharmonic concert near the campground."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have a social atmosphere. A camper noted about Smith Point: "Not EVERYBODY likes the same music as you do! It also happened to be Trick or Treat weekend on the campground which really fun to see."

Tips from RVers

NYC access from RV sites near Bohemia, New York: Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers the closest RV camping to Manhattan. "The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8... Having a view of Lady Liberty out your window is priceless."

Navigation challenges: Large RVs require careful route planning. One RVer advised, "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze."

Site spacing: RV parks in the region often have limited space between sites. A visitor to Liberty Harbor RV Park remarked, "This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore... Sites kind of level and very close. Power and water, and convenient dump station if staying and needing to dump."

Partial hookups: At North Fork Cottages & RV Resort, "Grassy and flat for our tent. Easy access to water and electric. There were tons of campers that were there for the season and kids playing together."
