Best RV Parks & Resorts near Bayport, NY

Several RV parks dot the eastern Long Island region surrounding Bayport, New York, with varying levels of amenities and site configurations. Smith Point County Park, open year-round, offers full hookup RV sites with 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. This big-rig friendly park includes pull-through sites that accommodate larger motorhomes and fifth wheels. Nearby, Heckscher State Park Campground operates seasonally from May through early September, providing electric hookups with both 30 and 50 amp service options, along with water connections and a sanitary dump station. Skyline RV Camp offers two distinct camping experiences - their Non-Waterfront area features 18 sites with electric hookups but no water connections, while their Waterfront location provides 40 sites that can accommodate larger rigs. "We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffolk Co Campground that is not well maintained," notes one RV camper about the local options.

Navigating to RV parks in this region requires careful planning, particularly for larger motorhomes. New York's parkways have height restrictions that prohibit RV travel, forcing drivers to take alternative routes that can add significant time to the journey. Most RV campgrounds in the area are reservable, with many requiring advance bookings during peak summer months. Dump stations are available at Smith Point County Park, Heckscher State Park, and Smith's Point, though accessibility varies by location. One traveler mentioned that "the dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig" at one local park. Pet policies are generally accommodating, with most parks allowing pets on leashes. Cell service is reliable throughout the region, making it possible to stay connected while camping. Propane is not widely available at the campgrounds themselves, so RVers should plan to fill tanks before arrival.

    Blydenburgh County Park

    Big Rig Camping in Blydenburgh

We have a 42 ft 5th wheel toy hauler. A few Big Rig spots are available, but this is a Suffock Co Campground that is not well maintained. 2 miles of the Road have many areas of missing blacktop making a very rough ride with low branches. The dump station is basically not accessible to a big rig. Most of the longer sites were very difficult to level.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Riverdale Farm Campsites

Great camping near Mystic off I-95

This is a really nice family campground just a mile or so off I-95 in Clinton, CT. It is about 20 miles from Mystic and the historic seaport center. Most of the roads are paved, the sites are large and level, there are full hookups, and a dump station. There are a lot of seasonal residents, but still plenty of open sites for travelers. There is a playground, game room, “adult ” lounge, a laundry, a swimming pond, and river access for fishing and swimming. Internet is an extra fee! ($6/day) The road into the campground is narrow and winding, so larger RV mss as y have trouble, but there were several of them there when we were there. There is a security gate at the entrance.

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

large family friendly campground with beach access

Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground is huge, family-friendly, and has direct beach access from the campground. There is no lifeguard on duty at the campground beach but lifeguards patrol the beach a mile or so north within the park. Smaller (car-top) boats can be launched from this area as well.

The campsites do NOT include a fire pit (or grill). You must bring your own or there are fire tub rentals available at the campground store.

The park includes a Nature Center complete with exhibits and activities, and hiking trails. Bald eagles can be seen on the nature reserve.

Expect long lines at the state park entrance fee station on the weekend if the weather is nice.

    Heckscher State Park Campground

    Great Late Fall Weekend Cabin

This was a last-minute booking for us and we were delighted with the beachside cottage, with enough amenities that mom and dad did not worry we had their cutie with us for "camping". She's too little for backpacking into the woods but finally got to stay overnight and help with the campfire!

    • cottages far enough away from each other
    • fire ring with Adirondack chairs
    • dumpster and recycling within walking distance
    • lots of bone dry firewood around for campfire
    • walkable beach
    • beautiful

    Hammonasset State Park Campground

    Peaceful 4th of July 2020

This campsite is near the shore in my home state of CT. It took a little over an hour to get here. Our spot was near a large salt marsh.

The park and beach were full occupancy for campers without reservations. I saw no tents - maybe due to COVID. There are ample bathhouses but the one near me is locked up. I suspect the others may also be closed.

A pair of geese and their goslings came to visit. See video and pictures.

No campfires allowed without a fire pit. You can rent one at the small camp store for a $20 deposit plus $12 first night the $2 each night - pay in advance.

Sites are large and clean. My site has trees for shade and a place to hang my hammock. But the park officials made me take it down :(.

Water hookup but no electricity on our sites. Water for drinking only was on my site but you can’t connect with a hose to your camper in most of the less expensive sites. There are more expensive sites with full hookups but no Wi-Fi.

Price of my site is very affordable around $20 a night.

I saw 2 dump stations near exit. Supermarkets a few miles down the road.

Easy to walk to the beach. Plan to kayak. There is a boat launch at Meig’s Point where you can drive 100 feet from the water to unload from your car. Lovely small beaches, walkways and jetties for fishing or photos of nature.

    Wildwood State Park Campground

    Camper side review

Stayed here for two nights with my popup and was surrounded by large motor homes/RVs. sites had zero privacy and were all pull through. There was water, electric and sewer hookups at each site, but this was an expensive place to ‘camp’. Bathrooms and showers were not really clean, which was surprising because most people used their personal bathroom/shower in their RV. It is close to the beach, but a very small and rocky beach. Overall, I don’t think this was the best place for us.

    Wildwood State Park Campground

Close to the beach and clean facility

This is a popular site in the peak season. The beach is in a walking distance. You can swim or fish there. This camp site has a relatively new and clean facility.

There are many farms near by where you can get fresh veggies and fruits.

Guide to Bayport

Suffolk County's parks offer a variety of camping experiences near Bayport, New York, from oceanfront sites to wooded inland locations. The area features flat, sandy terrain with Long Island's characteristic maritime climate—mild winters and humid summers. Camping permits for county parks are typically required for non-residents, with some parks exclusively serving Suffolk County residents.

What to do

Hiking trails: Cathedral Pines County Park offers wooded walking paths through pine forests. "Usually every site has a decent fire pit/grill. Usually quiet, occasional deer. Be sure to lock food away as the raccoons are pretty invasive," notes one camper at Cathedral Pines County Park.

Beach activities: The Atlantic Ocean and Great South Bay provide swimming, fishing, and beachcombing opportunities. At Smith Point County Park, "A stones throw away was one of several shower and rest room buildings. Clean and well lit. Our site had a trex picnic table on a cement patio. An on site firepit was cozy at night."

Wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds feature native deer that frequently visit camping areas. "And sweet deer. I watched a momma deer nursing two of her babies. This is paradise," reports a camper about their experience at Smith Point County Park.

What campers like

Beach proximity: Oceanfront camping provides immediate beach access. "Short walk to beach," notes a reviewer about Smith Point County Park, while another mentions, "Stayed on the bayside (site 30), which had a fantastic direct bay view."

Clean facilities: Many parks maintain well-kept shower houses and restrooms. At Heckscher State Park Campground, a reviewer reports, "The toilets are cleaned constantly, though they are not immaculate. There is a shop at the entrance to get supplies if you need it and you can rent firepits and buy firewood."

Family-friendly environment: Heckscher State Park Campground receives praise for its amenities. "This place is the best around for group and family camping. The entire campground is one flat open space where some sites are full in the shade and other sites (lower numbers) have lots of sun."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Several campgrounds have limited availability outside summer months. According to Blydenburgh County Park visitors, "We visited in late July. Park was excellent. Grounds were as advertised. Family friendly. Lots of long haulers it seemed around the sites."

Site spacing: Some campgrounds feature closely situated campsites with minimal privacy. "The camping sites are very close together without any defining borders so everybody just walks across each other site's to get to a different one, a path, the bathroom, etc.," explains a camper about Heckscher State Park Campground.

Reservation requirements: County park camping often requires advance booking. "Park was excellent. Grounds were as advertised. Family friendly," notes a Blydenburgh County Park visitor, while another mentions, "We have a great time" at the park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Battle Row Campground provides recreational facilities for children. "The playground is new and centrally located. They also have a horseshoe pit," notes a camper, while another mentions, "The park is clean the bathrooms are well maintained and there is a playground for the kids."

Beach safety: Supervise children at oceanfront locations due to currents. One Smith Point camper notes, "Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view," highlighting the proximity of water to campsites.

Pet considerations: Many parks allow leashed pets, but restrictions may apply. "Dogs are welcome. There's a large dog run so the fur babies will have a great time too," reports a Blydenburgh County Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When staying at rv parks near Bayport, New York, consider your vehicle size. At North Fork Cottages & RV Resort, a camper notes, "The sites were exactly what we needed. Grassy and flat for our tent. Easy access to water and electric."

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds near Bayport offer complete RV utilities. "Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table," reports a visitor to Totoket Valley RV Park.

Local travel restrictions: Plan alternate routes due to parkway height limitations. "Very clean campgrounds lots of space. Not much to do inside the grounds," notes a Blydenburgh County Park reviewer about the camping facilities at this Suffolk County RV park.
