Long Island campgrounds near Bayport provide a mix of wooded areas and coastal settings with varied terrain. Most campgrounds have sites located on level ground with sandy soil conditions common to Suffolk County. Summer temperatures range from 70-85°F during day and 55-65°F at night, with humidity levels higher near shore locations than inland sites.
What to do
Beach access: 5-minute walk at Smith Point County Park. "A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite. No shade so be prepared to wake early if you're in a sweltering tent," notes Ali O. The ocean beaches offer swimming from late May through early September.
Kayaking on Peconic Bay: Available at Indian Island County Park. "You are a short walk from beach access and kayak launch. There is a playground for kids and clean facilities," according to Michael G. Kayak rentals typically cost $20-25 per hour with personal flotation devices included.
Hiking along the lake: Southaven County Park provides a 7-mile loop trail around the lake with moderate terrain. "Awesome water activities, and great hikes! They have quite a few walking, hiking and biking trails nearby," explains Kari M. Trails are open year-round but can become muddy after rainfall.
What campers like
Wooded sites: Cathedral Pines County Park offers more secluded camping options. "Wooded sites are lovely. RV sites in large field," notes Karen R. Sites are spaced further apart than many Long Island campgrounds, providing more privacy between neighbors.
Beach proximity: Wildwood State Park Campground sits along the Long Island Sound. "It's a fun campground, has a great beach & great bathroom facilities," says Courtney K. The beach area features a small boardwalk and is a 10-15 minute walk from most campsites.
Off-season camping: October visits often provide the best experience. "Being on the beach and camping in October is just awesome. The bugs are gone, the days are warm and the nights are chilly," shares Chris A. from Smith Point. Fall temperatures average 55-70°F during the day with clearer skies than summer months.
What you should know
Facilities vary widely: Blydenburgh County Park provides more modern amenities than other parks. "Grounds were as advertised. Family friendly. Ranger drove around a few times to say hi. Trails were awesome. Row boat for fishing was great," reports Christopher S. Bathroom facilities are generally cleaned daily but can become busy during peak weekends.
Site spacing concerns: Many campgrounds have sites positioned close together. "The campsites are very close together without any defining borders so everybody just walks across each other site's to get to a different one, a path, the bathroom, etc.," writes Jessica C. about Heckscher State Park.
Permit requirements: Suffolk County parks require a Green Key card for residents. "Worth buying green key card for resident access. 200 but you'd spend that 4 nights regardless," advises Maria P. Non-residents can purchase daily or weekly permits at higher rates than resident fees.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple parks offer family-friendly amenities. "It's nice for kids they have an open field with a playground for kids. There are dog friendly which was very nice," explains Gino D. about Indian Island County Park. Most playgrounds are centrally located and open from dawn to dusk.
Beach cottages: Heckscher State Park Campground offers an alternative to tent camping. "Modern facility with full kitchen accessories, clean interior, clean campground, modern cottage with propane fireplace, WiFi access, bathroom with shower," notes W L. Cottages accommodate 2-6 people with rates from $225-285 per night off-peak.
Wildlife viewing: Children often enjoy the natural surroundings. "Wildlife: deer, rabbits, turtles," mentions W L. about Heckscher State Park. Early morning and dusk provide the best wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly near wooded edges.
Tips for RVers
Hookup availability: Watch Hill Fire Island Campground provides services for recreational vehicles. "Electric and water is nice for pop up. Little pricey compared to nys parks," advises Stephen P. Most sites have 30-amp service with water connections, though sewer hookups are less common.
Site leveling: Many campgrounds have relatively flat areas for RVs. "RV pull through sites were fantastic. It was a great campground for maiden voyage in new rig. Plenty of amenities," reports Lori R. about Wildwood State Park. Sites typically accommodate vehicles up to 35 feet, though some parks have designated areas for larger rigs.
Dump stations: Available at most county parks but often with limited capacity. "Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there," shares Janelle G. about Indian Island County Park. Dump stations can become congested during peak checkout times on Sundays.
