Best Campgrounds near Fort Sumner, NM

Camping near Fort Sumner, New Mexico centers around several lake-based recreation areas and small local parks in this eastern New Mexico region. Sumner Lake State Park, located about 15 miles northwest of town, features multiple campgrounds including Pecos, Mesquite, and East Side, all offering both tent and RV camping options. Closer to town, Bosque Redondo Park provides free primitive camping with basic amenities near a small fishing pond. The area's historical significance as the site of Billy the Kid's burial place and the Bosque Redondo Memorial adds cultural context to the camping experience. Valley View RV Park in Fort Sumner offers year-round accommodations for those seeking full hookups within town limits.

The desert climate creates distinct camping conditions throughout the year. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, while winters can bring freezing temperatures, especially at night. Campers report consistent wind across the region, requiring secure tent stakes and proper RV stabilization. Most state park campgrounds require reservations through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system, while Bosque Redondo Park operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Water levels at Sumner Lake fluctuate seasonally and have been reported as low in recent years. Insect activity increases at dusk, particularly at lakeside sites where gnats can be problematic during warmer months.

Camping options vary in amenities and accessibility. State park campgrounds provide electric hookups, water access, and shower facilities, though some bathrooms close during winter months due to freezing conditions. Primitive areas near the lakeshore offer more seclusion but fewer amenities. According to reviews, the night sky viewing is exceptional throughout the area due to minimal light pollution. Wildlife sightings are common, with campers noting turkeys, coyotes, and various desert species. One visitor mentioned, "Be careful of rattlesnakes, scorpions, and tarantulas. This area is also cougar country." The rocky terrain at many sites can make tent setup challenging, with another camper noting that "a lot of the spots are extremely rocky and just full of gravel."

Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

    Nice Facilities

Stopped on my way thru NM. Bathroom/shower facilities are great! Most sites have a covered picnic table and grill. There is a playground for kids and dumping station. It’s about a 7 mile drive from Int 40.

Juniper Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

Nice view of the lake, easy access to sites

Stopped for the night on our way through NM. Short drive off hwy 40. Arrived after hours and all the sites at the Juniper camp were open (Sunday in August). We chose J11. Nice view of the lake. There is a bit of trash around the site though 😕 Used the envelope at the pay station to pay. Have cash and a pen handy. The sites at Juniper could not be reserved online. They were “walk in” only.

    Love's RV Hookup-Santa Rosa NM 285

It's a Loves, a good, convincing overnight stop

Good level concrete pad, plenty long for my 36ft travel trailer and long box pick up. Great voltage, 121vac on my 50 amp connection. Back in site, very easy to get in to. Only negative is my site was right beside big truck entrance, but with a/c on, we heard very little.

Pecos Campground — Sumner Lake State Park

    Peaceful overnight

I booked this site (Pecos #9) months out to give us a place to stay on our way home from AZ. There was no one at the visitor’s center, but we easily found the CG. We were a bit worried about connecting our water and electricity, as the site had a bit of distance between the connections and the site. There was a shared water spigot- no one was beside us, but if someone was- we would have used our water splitter. (Good to always have a splitter! Site 9 was very level so we only put our stabilizer jacks down and didn’t need any blocking. We had use of a nice fire ring and the site’s own trash can. We walked down to the lake and sat for a bit but as it started to get dark, the gnats and mosquitoes were intense. The sunset was amazing and early the next morning we were treated to a viewing of a flock of turkeys wandering through the CG. The dump station was easy to find close to the CG. There were probably six other sites in use on the Tuesday night we were there- it was quiet and relaxing.

    Bosque Redondo Park

    Private, peaceful, and relaxing

This is absolutely worth the visit. It's clean, and you have your own area with a picnic table and trash can. It seems safe here . When we pulled in, there was and officer's sitting here. We seen 1 vehicle in 2 days. This is BLM land and there are no hook ups, be prepared. There's lots to see. Big area to walk. Play ground for the kids. Dark at night. Lots of star gazing.

Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

    Quiet and Beautiful

Lovely Campground with great facilities. Most cites have full hook ups but some only have electricity. Keep in mind when booking. Nice hiking trails and the hosts were on their game, really keeping up with the grounds. I'd come back if I was passing through again.
