Best RV Parks & Resorts near Winfield, NJ

Several RV parks operate within 30 miles of Winfield, New Jersey, providing varied options for motorhome travelers. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City features 90 sites with water and electric hookups, including 30/50 amp service, though it lacks sewer connections at individual sites. NWS Earle RV Park in Colts Neck offers big-rig friendly spaces with full hookups including 50 amp service, operating seasonally from April through mid-November. Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY maintains 74 full hookup sites that accommodate larger rigs and remains open year-round. The Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center provides spacious RV sites with concrete pads and full hookups during its summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. "Our site was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable," noted one RV camper about a nearby park. "It was roomy, shady, and easy to pull in and out."

Navigation to some RV campgrounds requires careful planning, particularly for larger motorhomes. One traveler cautioned about a campground entrance with "a extremely sharp right turn and then over a narrow bridge." Cell service varies significantly across the region's RV parks - Verizon coverage is generally reliable at Liberty Harbor and Black Bear RV Park, while other locations report spotty reception. Most RV sites in the area include picnic tables and fire rings, though alcohol policies differ between parks. Dump stations are available at most locations, with NWS Earle and Black Bear offering on-site facilities. Pet policies vary considerably - most parks welcome pets but Military Park National Guard Training Center prohibits them entirely. Reservation requirements become particularly important during summer months when many parks reach capacity, especially those with proximity to New York City or the Jersey Shore.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

    Butterfly Camping Resort

    Nice & quiet getaway

    4½ Stars Quick Weekend Getaway

We stayed at Butterfly Camping Resort in Jackson, New Jersey, for a 2-night weekend in late-August. We’re so glad we did!

Our site(#90) was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was roomy, shady, and easy to pull in and out. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine. We had plenty of room to fit our car too. The site included a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring.

The gated campground was clean and well-maintained. The swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear. The store was stocked with typical essentials like supplies, fire wood, and snacks. Most of the neighboring RVs were nice and in good shape. The park has bath facilities, a dump station on the way out, and lots of play areas.

The front office staff were all friendly and we love that, especially when checking in at a new campground. When I called for a last-minute reservation, they seemed glad to have us.

This park is close to Great Adventure and not far from the Jersey shore if that’s in your plans.

There were two observations I’d categorize as ‘no park is perfect.’ The site was sandy. The whole place is sandy. This is messy, especially after a bit of rain(which we had), and makes it a constant challenge to keep the sand out of the RV. If the site had gravel, grass, or some other surface, this would be a 5-star review. They offer wifi which is nice to have, but it didn’t work very well. I realize this is a common complaint at many campgrounds, but we’ve come to want to stay connected(at least, a little).

This is a really nice campground with inviting pool and facilities. We can’t wait to go back!

Guide to Winfield

RV camping near Winfield, New Jersey places travelers within 30 miles of both the Atlantic coast and New York City. The region sits at the transition between coastal plains and the Watchung Mountains, with elevations ranging from near sea level to 400 feet. Most campgrounds remain open from April through October, though limited options exist for winter camping.

What to do

Hiking trails access: At Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, walking paths connect directly to campground areas. "We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," notes a visitor who frequently camps with family and pets.

Farm animal encounters: At Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort, visitors can interact with various farm animals. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," writes one camper. Another adds: "The amazingly beautiful miniature horse that wonders around its huge pin located in the middle of the campground."

City excursions: From Liberty Harbor RV Park, accessing Manhattan requires minimal driving. "There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F. There is a great market about 1/4 of a mile away, and the path that can take you to WTC or 33rd Street area is only a mile away," explains one visitor.

What campers like

Concrete pads: The military campground at NWS Earle RV Park receives praise for its level sites. "All spaces are level concrete with full hookups and attached concrete patio. Power is at the far back & sewage is in the middle (left to right)," notes one military camper.

Wildlife viewing: Black Bear RV Park provides opportunities to spot local fauna. "The best part was at dusk when the animals came out!" writes one visitor who stayed during campground renovations.

Quiet surroundings: Less crowded options provide peaceful environments. "It is so quiet here. No amenities or extras here, just really pleasant camping in the woods," reports a Mahlon Dickerson visitor. Another adds: "Even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room."

What you should know

Navigation challenges: Street construction can complicate arrival at urban campgrounds. At Liberty Harbor, one camper noted: "The area itself was under a ton of construction when we drove in, which meant for difficult to navigate roads and we barely squeezed by larger trucks who were also in the roadways."

Limited facilities: Several campgrounds restrict amenities during off-season periods. "The office, playground, dog park, pool, laundry are located at the top of the hill. Camping spots are downhill, a good distance from the office and amenities," explains a Pleasant Acres visitor.

Alcohol policies: Rules vary significantly between parks. One Mahlon Dickerson camper warned: "Campground rules do not list anything about alcohol on the website or the emailed rules given after reservation, however there is an alcohol prohibited sign as you enter."

Tips for camping with families

Wildlife education: Black Bear RV Park provides natural learning opportunities despite its relatively high fees. "It will be beautiful when they're finished. Can't wait to come back and give them a 5 star review! The best part was at dusk when the animals came out!"

Activity planning: Pleasant Acres organizes regular events. "Lots of seasonals and lots of cabins, many RV sites I think all with full hookups. Plenty to occupy the kids. Playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)."

Bear awareness: Northern New Jersey parks require wildlife precautions. "There are a lot of bear warnings here so that gave us a bit of pause with our three little boys," reports a family at Mahlon Dickerson.

Tips from RVers

Arrival timing: Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites operates seasonally. "9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance," advises one visitor who also noted: "The sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks."

Water connection length: Bring extension hoses for some parks. "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection," explains a Mahlon Dickerson visitor.

Transportation planning: For RV campers seeking city access, Liberty Harbor provides transit options. "There is a light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8," notes one reviewer who recommends planning arrival routes carefully to avoid tunnel tolls.
