Best RV Parks & Resorts near South Plainfield, NJ

Several RV campgrounds serve the South Plainfield area with varying amenities and accessibility. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides 90 sites with electric hookups, water connections, and sanitary dump facilities, though fires are not permitted. NWS Earle RV Park in Colts Neck offers full hookup sites including 50-amp service and sewer connections, operating seasonally from April through mid-November. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township features pull-through sites with 30-amp electric and water hookups, though without sewer connections at individual sites. Indian Rock RV Resort in Jackson accommodates larger vehicles with both 30 and 50-amp service options on its 99 sites. "All sites are pull-through with water and electric. The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine."

Navigating to some parks requires careful planning, particularly for larger motorhomes. Roads leading to campgrounds like Earle RV Park can be challenging for oversized rigs with tight turns and narrow bridges. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with spotty coverage reported at several locations. Most parks maintain dump stations for convenience when sewer connections aren't available at individual sites. During summer months, facilities like pools and recreation areas operate at full capacity, while winter limits some amenities. Reservations become essential during peak season, especially for weekend stays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, many parks have concrete pads with full hookups, though connection placement sometimes requires careful positioning, with some noting that "longer campers will be parked over the sewage connection."

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

Its a great campGround But There are some cons. Don't come if your in a tent And It Has Been ior will rain, It Becomes Flooded or turns into A mudPit. All The Private or Good spots are usually taken By seasonals But the other spots are decent if you Have A Big rig it can Be A little squish.

Pros Great People beautiful surroundings Nice Bathrooms Quiet and Peaceful Accessible Nice Pool Every store U could Need is in about 15 mins Away Not Alot of Stupid rules just Be respectful Pet friendly

I Been coming Here for years Never Had A Bad Time.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center RV Sites

    Quiet, spacious, no frills

We stayed in site #1 with our 21' travel trailer. In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean. Big rig spots are further back (around site 6-9 or so). 9 sites total & they are often booked, so need to do so in advance. Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road. Close to shore towns & many restaurants. Plenty of space for kids to play in the field/grass area. TONS of geese everywhere though. Pets are NOT allowed (but they'd probably help w the geese problem). You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in, but I don't have anything to report as I used the bathroom/shower in our trailer. Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well. Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains.

What to do

Hiking trails: Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township features several short hiking trails with the longest being 2.5 miles. "The trails are fairly well-marked but can be a bit confusing at times. Some sections were muddy due to swamps and bogs but passable," notes a visitor from Turkey Swamp Park.

Water activities: Fishing and boating options exist at multiple parks within 30 miles of South Plainfield. "There is a lake with a boat dock and a small boardwalk. In summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental," shares a reviewer about Turkey Swamp Park.

Archery practice: For campers interested in target sports, dedicated facilities exist at select parks. One reviewer mentioned that Turkey Swamp Park offers "plenty to do over a 2-night stay. Archery, boating, fishing, and hiking. Boat rental rates are acceptable and there are four different styles to choose from."

NYC sightseeing: Liberty Harbor RV Park provides unique urban camping with city access. A camper at Liberty Harbor RV Park noted, "Minutes walk to the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Science Center. Two blocks away from NJ Path train into Manhattan or take the ferry to Wall Street!"

What campers like

Spacious wooded sites: Several parks provide ample space between campsites. A Mahlon Dickerson Reservation visitor wrote, "The campsites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large. Water and electric hookups and a dump station."

Quiet atmosphere: Many campgrounds maintain peaceful settings despite proximity to urban areas. "It is so quiet here. No amenities or extras here, just really pleasant camping in the woods," explains a Mahlon Dickerson camper who appreciated the simplicity.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds regularly maintain their bathhouses and common areas. A camper at Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center shared, "You get access to the showers with a key card and when you check in... Price is great at $45/night. FULL hookups as well."

Views and access: Some sites offer unique vantage points. "In our opinion this is the best site because you have an unobstructed view of Stockton Lake & the horizon over the ocean," reported a visitor about site #1 at Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Summer weekends fill quickly at most parks in the region. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the forest," notes a Turkey Swamp Park visitor, making it a popular choice requiring advance booking.

Seasonal pests: Ticks can be prevalent in wooded New Jersey campgrounds. A candid Turkey Swamp camper reported, "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper."

Road conditions: Access roads vary dramatically between campgrounds. At Indian Rock RV Resort, one visitor mentioned their site was "a big pull-through site," making access straightforward, while other parks have dirt roads that become challenging in wet conditions.

Wildlife awareness: Bear activity requires proper food storage and awareness in northern New Jersey campgrounds. "There are a lot of bear warnings here so that gave us a bit of pause with our three little boys," mentioned a Mahlon Dickerson camper.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some parks feature dedicated play spaces for children. A Turkey Swamp Park visitor noted, "There are playgrounds and picnic areas as well. This is a lovely campground."

Swimming options: Water recreation provides entertainment for families during summer months. "Free beach just a few moments' walk down the road," shared a Military Park NJ National Guard Training Center visitor, describing nearby amenities.

Tent platform benefits: Raised platforms at select parks keep sleeping areas dry. "They have these 12x12 platforms to put your tent on. This was pretty cool especially since some of the sites are all gravel with surrounding dirt," explained a Mahlon Dickerson camper.

Proximity to attractions: Many campgrounds provide strategic locations near family entertainment. A visitor staying at Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground shared, "We stayed two nights at this park because we wanted to spend a day at Six flags. Check in process was painless and the woman at the front desk was super nice and helpful."

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: Position your rig carefully to align with connections. A Military Park NJ National Guard camper noted, "Only annoying thing was the sewer hookup is about 18 inches off the ground so you need to lift the hose when emptying the tanks to ensure it actually fully drains."

Water hose requirements: Be prepared with appropriate hose lengths. "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection," reported a Mahlon Dickerson visitor.

Urban camping considerations: City-adjacent RV parks have unique characteristics. A Liberty Harbor RV Park visitor explained, "This is all about location. The closest RV park to NYC. It's basically a parking lot with a dump station. Not much else. Pick one of the larger end row sites to get a little extra elbow room."

Big rig navigation: Some parks accommodate larger vehicles better than others. "Easy to navigate our 38 ft. RV. Easy to dump and fill," shared a Mahlon Dickerson visitor, providing helpful information for those with larger motorhomes.
