Glamping options close to Longport, New Jersey span from rustic yurts to full-service cabin accommodations throughout the Pine Barrens region. The coastal location creates variable weather conditions with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August.
What to do
Kayaking on Wading River: Launch directly from riverside campsites at Wading Pines Camping Resort, where access to the water provides excellent paddling opportunities. "First time camping at the Jersey shore. This campground had it all from a huge pool and unbelievable splash pad to a great swimming pond with a beach," reports Ray L.
Swimming at Lake Nummy: Belleplain State Forest offers lake swimming with sandy beaches approximately 25 minutes from Longport. The recreation area includes rental options for canoes and kayaks during summer months. According to April E., "Very nice campground tucked away in southern NJ. Clean facilities. Plenty of space for our tent. Lake for swimming and you can rent boats."
Rail trail biking: Access the 11-mile rail trail across from Sun Outdoors Cape May for family-friendly cycling on flat terrain. The paved surface accommodates all skill levels and connects to nearby communities. "There is an 11 mile rail trail across the street as well," notes Joel A.
Beach day trips: Most glamping accommodations near Longport provide easy access to multiple beaches within 20-30 minutes. "Close driving distances to local beaches and boardwalks," writes Brandon W. about Ocean View Resort Campground, making it convenient for day excursions.
What campers like
Large lake swimming areas: Atsion Family Camp in Wharton State Forest features lakefront sites with direct water access for swimming and paddling. "I always get site #8 and it has an amazing view of the lake. While camping at atsion family campground, you have free access to the recreation center (the beach and some trails)," shares Alexa L.
Site privacy levels: Belleplain State Forest offers wooded sites with good separation between camping areas. "Our site was HUGE!!!! It was also super private with trees and a lot of privacy from the road and our neighbors," explains Anne H. This makes it ideal for glampers seeking more seclusion than resort-style options.
Well-stocked camp stores: Atlantic Shore Pines Campground maintains supplies for extended stays without leaving the property. "The campground is now known as Atlantic Shore Pines. This place is very close to Bass River State Park with lots of hiking and outdoor activities," states Dave B.
Seasonal events: Many glamping sites offer themed weekends and scheduled activities during summer months. "We didn't take advantage of any of the activities and I heard a band playing Sat night," mentions Stacy D., highlighting entertainment options available at several locations.
What you should know
Shower facilities vary widely: Check specific bathroom availability when booking glamping accommodations. "We were NOT happy that the bathrooms next to us were closed, apparently for years, and it was not noted. We purposely booked in 105 due to the proximity," cautions Anne H. about Belleplain State Forest.
Cell service limitations: Pleasant Valley Family Campground and surrounding areas often have weak or non-existent connectivity. "Virtually NO cell service with AT&T, TMobile or Verizon. AT&T we the better of the 3," notes a camper, making it important to download maps and information before arrival.
Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds feature sandy soil that can present difficulties for RVs and larger units. "Very nice campground—good sized sites, well maintained hookups, clean grounds, friendly staff, well-stocked campstore. The only drawback was my site was not very level and took a few tries to get levelled," reports Jim G.
Seasonal availability: Most glamping accommodations operate April through October, with peak season in July and August requiring reservations months in advance. "Does get very crowded and definitely have to book ahead," warns a camper about seasonal demand.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities for all ages: Ocean View Resort Campground provides multiple water features suitable for different age groups. "Ocean View Resort was an excellent resort for our family with two toddlers. Kids loved the Splash Park, Arcade, Tram Car, playgrounds and Lake. So much to do at this resort," shares Ann Marie M.
Day trip planning: Allow 25-30 minutes travel time to beaches and attractions from most glamping sites. "About 20 minutes away from the Cape May zoo," notes a reviewer about proximity to family-friendly destinations from Belleplain State Forest.
Bring insect protection: The Pine Barrens region has significant mosquito activity, especially near water features. "Sites are very wooded, close to each other. Fun for kids. The lake is huge, the pools are crowded but fun. There is a splash pad for little ones. Our 3 yr old loved it," mentions Kirsten J.
Pack quarters for showers: Some state forest facilities require coins for hot water showers. "You have to pay to use a shower so bring quarters!" advises a camper about facility requirements at certain locations.
Tips from RVers
Narrow access roads: Mays Landing Resort and similar campgrounds feature tight turns and one-way systems that require careful navigation. "The exit is very tight to get out of and all lanes are one way so be careful if you have a big rig," cautions Yamileth K.
Site spacing considerations: Evaluate site maps carefully when booking glamping accommodations with larger units. "Sites are very unleveled so the staff switched us to a pull thru space that was a tad bit more level but still very unleveled," reports Daniel C.
Dump station congestion: Holiday weekends create significant backups at limited dump facilities. "The worst was the dump station. It is just a little hole on the side of the road and the ONLY dump station for the 3 campgrounds! It was very unlevel and not easy to fully dump our tanks," notes a camper about state forest facilities.
Sand management strategies: Bring appropriate cleaning supplies for sandy sites. "Sites are packed sand so be prepared with a good broom because it tracks everywhere," advises Jim G. about maintaining cleanliness inside RVs and glamping units.
