Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch

    Nice park

Nice park. Sites are okay. Ours was one of the better ones. Spacious and level gravel pad with large grassy area on patio side. Our site was 50 amp full hookups. Many weren’t. Couple of small fishing ponds. Campground is situated on Boulder River. Office staff was friendly. Laundry facility was clean but dated. (Harvest gold dryers from the 70’s dated). Great proximity to downtown big timber, MT. One grocery store (IGA). 30 min from Livingston.

Osen's RV Park by Starry Night Lodging

    Good spot near yellowstone

This is an independent campground about an hour from the north entrance of Yellowstone. The spots are reasonably level and about half and half pull-through vs back in. They use a larger size gravel on the roads so there is very little dust. The staff is very attentive and there seems to be good security at the campground. The hookups are well placed and everything worked well. Bathrooms and showers are reasonably clean and seem to be cleaned frequently. Nice fenced in dog area. All the spots have nice new plastic picnic tables. No fire rings. Grounds are very well cared for, grass is in great shape. There are lots of restaurants and shops nearby.

A few things to be aware of:

    • The road in is a bit bumpy and trees on both sides, so be careful coming in if you have a big rig
    • No wood camp fires
    • There is no tent camping allowed here

    Hood Creek Campground

    Amazing Views

Stayed here one night after passing through Bozeman to get my Go Fast Camper. It did not disappoint. We stayed at spot 12 and it had amazing views of the lake/reservoir and mountain. Hiking trails around there are great as well. Camp hosts were super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend. Pet friendly! No AT&T or Sprint cell signal.

    Langohr Campground

Cute Little Campground with Just the Right Amenities

About 20 minutes south of Bozeman, MT on scenic Hyalite Canyon Road sits Langohr Campground. There are 19 spacious single sites and the 20th site is a group picnic site for day use. Langohr Campground runs along Hyalite Creek and is tucked inside Custer Gallatin National Forest in a small open meadow with Douglas fir, Lodgepole pine, and Englemann Spruce.

I was fortunate to find a campsite as a walk-in even after arriving mid-afternoon at the beginning of June 2019 because it was too late to reserve online. Each site does have a picnic table and fire ring, and electrical sites are available. Some are drive-in or back into sites, and a few are literally next to Hyalite Creek which is an added bonus. A heavy snowfall occurred a week before and remnants of it were scattered along the campground. Good thing I brought a snow scraper to clear the picnic table of snow. The fee is $20.00 per campsite for two vehicles and $8.00 for any additional vehicles. The group picnic site is $45.00 for day use. I paid cash for the site, but I believe you may also pay by credit card.

Many of the campers were settling in and had parked RVs and pop-ups. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash as wildlife such as bears, deers, moose, and elk frequent the area. Bear lockers should be used for food storage or properly stored in vehicles. There are huge bear safe trash and recycling containers near the entrance for campers to use. The bathroom is clean, free of odor and bugs, and it is a vault toilet. There are no showers, dump station, or camp store, but you are close to Bozeman.  The camp host was settled on site 11 and sells firewood for $6.00. You can take a walk along the Hyalite Creek or drive 3.5 miles south down to Hyalite Reservoir for other activities such as fishing, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, hiking, and boating. The night sky was pretty spectacular especially with the trees around on a clear day.

Mammoth Campground — Yellowstone National Park

    Year-Round Campground in Yellowstone

Mammoth Hot Springs campground is the only (year-round) campground open in Yellowstone from late fall to spring. This campground has about 85 sites, and half of those are open in the winter. Summer time makes this campground feel quite crowded, and allows for RVs up to 75 feet, but in winter there is a tight turn that makes it only open to RVs under 30 feet. The campground is set in tiers on a hillside, so if you get a site near the top, you have an excellent view of the surrounding valley and Electric Peak.

This campground has drinking water available but no dump station. We usually haul to Billings and dump at Cabela's there, or stop at Canyon campground if heading out the East Entrance. In the off-season this campground is a very nice stay - quiet even though it is close to the road, and not usually full until spring. The town of Gardiner, MT, is only a few miles north, which offers restaurants and gas (although there is also both available in Mammoth Hot Springs). Just up the hill above the campground is the town of M. H. Springs, which is a nice place to spend time. If you are traveling with kids, be sure to stop in the awesome Visitor Center and museum. Lots of hands-on stuff to explore. Just up from the Visitor Center are the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces, a geological feature sure to knock your socks off in any season.

For the more adventurous souls like us, you can access the Boiling River Trail to the north of the campground and jump in the river, even in the middle of winter. The Boiling River flows into the Gardner River, creating the perfect all-season hot tub. In addition to thermal features, there are tons of wildlife viewing opportunities right from the campground, especially elk, bison, and bighorn sheep.

Although not our favorite campground in the park, MHS Campground, being open all year, is an ample location to stay on your Yellowstone vacation.

    Yellowstone Edge RV Park

    Worth it for the view

Right on the edge of the Yellowstone River, about 90 minutes north of Yellowstone NP. This is an RV Park, so no tents are allowed. The view of the river and the mountains is fantastic. And, it’s close to dining in Livingston if you want that. Laundry facilities and a larger than average store. Pet friendly. The sites are small. But, I would definitely go back.

Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch

Love the Sound of the River

We followed our RV GPS right to the campground (CG), which is a favorite of ours for a two-night stay. Check-in was quick and easy. We proceeded to Deluxe River site 18 with 30 AMP and water. You can angle the rig in as you want to get set up on the wide pad area. The utilities were in the middle of the gravel pad, and we could park where our 9’ patio could come out to enjoy the gorgeous view of the river. They have free WiFi, but it was not very fast, and we used our Starlink. There are mature trees here, but we got a clear shot north for Starlink. We got 3 bars on Verizon. The water pressure was okay. Talking to our next-door neighbors, who have stayed here over the years, this CG is under new management by a couple who also owned a KOA in Billings. There are already changes, such as getting rid of the cabins and putting in some new FHU sites. There may be plans for new cabins in the future. We also noticed that from staying here in September 2019, the ponds are now state-stocked, and you need a Montana fishing license following regular fishing regulations versus no-license pay for the trout you catch. They also have a military and senior discount, but this wasn't mentioned/given when we made our reservations online. We mentioned it to the lady who checked us in, but she didn't offer to refund us the discount like other CG's have done in the past. There is no dog park, but there’s plenty of area to walk your dog. Someday we are going to plan a longer than two-day stay so we can further explore the area and fly fish the river.

Guide to Livingston

Camping near Livingston, Montana is situated at an elevation of 4,500 feet in the Yellowstone River valley, with the towering Absaroka Mountain Range creating a dramatic backdrop to the east. Summer temperatures typically range from 50-85°F, while spring and fall can bring rapid weather changes with overnight freezes common even in late May. The region's proximity to Yellowstone National Park makes it a popular staging area for park visitors seeking full-service rv sites near Livingston, Montana.

What to do

River activities: Yellowstone River access from several campgrounds offers excellent fishing and rafting opportunities. At Yellowstone Edge RV Park, campers can fish directly from the property. "Right on the edge of the Yellowstone River, about 90 minutes north of Yellowstone NP. The view of the river and the mountains is fantastic," notes Joel R.

Hot springs visits: Local thermal pools provide relaxation after hiking days. Bozeman Hot Springs Campground & RV includes hot springs access with your stay. "Campers are given bracelets for access to use the Hot Springs 12 pools which are... incredible. The indoor and outdoor pools vary in temperature from 106-56 degrees, with most comfortable temps," reports kristin S.

Wildlife viewing: Mountain habitats support diverse wildlife viewable from campgrounds. "Elk roam the campground and that's super cool!" mentions Donna H. about Sun Outdoors Yellowstone North. Early morning and dusk offer the best viewing times for elk, deer, and occasional moose in meadow areas.

What campers like

Mountain views: Absaroka Range vistas provide dramatic backdrops at many camping areas. Livingston/Paradise Valley KOA Holiday offers particularly good viewpoints. "Great little KOA. Awesome views of the Absaroka range. Book early. Tent sites were great," recommends Justin S.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms rank high in camper satisfaction. "Such a great RV park. The restrooms, laundry, and all of the grounds are spotless. The owners are so helpful and friendly and the location and views are fantastic," writes Meghan T. about Yellowstone Edge RV Park.

River proximity: Riverside sites offer natural sound barriers and scenic settings. Yellowstone RV Park features sites directly on the Yellowstone. "Our level gravel site backed up to the Yellowstone River where we watched the antelope feed on the cliffs and listened to the peaceful sounds of the river," shares Ann F.

What you should know

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds require careful navigation. The road to Fairy Lake Campground is particularly challenging. "The 6-mile unmaintained road to get to the campground is definitely rough. The warnings are justified—it's bumpy, rocky, and slow going," warns Sayler O.

Wildlife precautions: Bear awareness is essential in this region. "For sure there is 1 grizzly that's pretty big. He checked out our truck tent. Mountain Goats will come in your camp and they are not scared," reports Jonathan A. about Fairy Lake Campground. All sites require proper food storage in vehicles or bear boxes.

Seasonal closures: Most facilities operate from May through October. "We were heading to Yellowstone from Glacier and had been driving for hours. We called and the park and they gave us the last site open for that day and what a site/view!" notes Norma S. about securing last-minute availability at Yellowstone Edge RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Kid-friendly facilities can make longer stays more enjoyable. "Nice playground for kids and laundry room available," mentions Ann F. about the Livingston/Paradise Valley KOA Holiday, which maintains a dedicated play area with climbing equipment.

Swimming options: Pool facilities provide alternative recreation during hot days or when hiking plans change. "Great for RVs and Trailers. Right on the river with benches to sit and enjoy the water. Nice playground and covered pool, dog friendly," explains Rachel H. combining observations from multiple campgrounds.

Educational opportunities: Wildlife viewing spots offer natural learning experiences. "We watched the antelope feed on the cliffs," notes Ann F. about Yellowstone RV Park, where children can observe wildlife in natural habitats from safe distances.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Prepare for varied terrain at many RV sites near Livingston, Montana. "Sites are reasonably level and about half and half pull-through vs back in. They use a larger size gravel on the roads so there is very little dust," explains Ben H. about Osen's RV Park.

Connectivity: Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds. "Great WiFi, T-Mobile 5g 2bars," reports Daniel W. about his stay at Osen's RV Park by Starry Night Lodging, while other campgrounds may have limited connectivity.

Hookup quality: Water pressure fluctuations occur at some facilities. "Full hookups with lots of space and awesome river views. Full hookups, nice clean bathrooms, game room and little store that has everything," notes Barb N., emphasizing the reliability of utilities at Yellowstone Edge RV Park.
