Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

      Close to West Yellowstone

9/6/19 Conveniently located, 6 miles from west entrance of park. We had a pull thru site, 45,. Level gravel site. I didn't like that our electric and water are on site 44 grass area right next to their firepit. Our picnic area not level. Table very worn. They have a lot of different sites including ones with patio and porch swing, tent sites, cottage. Sites that back up to highway get a lot of road noise. Bathhouse attached to store was average quality, clean, good water pressure. The bathhouse attached to the indoor pool/spa smelled really moldy. Nice play area with mini golf. Small fenced dog area. Good size laundry facilities and store.

      Spire Rock Campground

      Great spot

I showed up here late one night on my way to Big Sky and was lucky enough to get a spot. There are plenty of amenities such as toilets, fire pits, and tables. If you are looking to do some night photography there are some great spots just along the river, which the campground borders, that provide some breathtaking views. There can be a bit of noise in the morning with people heading up the road for off road fun but overall this is a great little spot tucked away just off the highway.

      Tiny Town Campground

Not for those who want sleep

We arrived to this quaint little place after a long fun filled day in Yellowstone National Park.  If you are looking for peace and quiet look elsewhere.   If you have young children that go to bed before midnight look elsewhere.  If you are looking for air-conditioning  do not rent the tents because there isn't any.  While the place has some cute rustic charm they are located behind a bar and the music goes until 10pm on Sundays  and midnight on Friday and Saturday.  They have live bands which are so loud that you can feel the music and cannot hear anything else. They do provide ear plugs but they do not help.  I enjoying  writing  and was unable to do so because i could not  concentrate, even my noise canceling Boze headphones did not provide any relief.  They also need to update security because we had people coming onto the property without using the provided code.

Yellowstone Park / West Gate KOA Holiday

      TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT, DON'T STAY!!

Reserved a cabin at KOA in West Yellowstone; it had been raining, the area in front of our cabin was a lake!!    Our fire pit and picnic table were completely underwater.   We went to office & they assured us they would send someone over to take a look.   They threw down some boards to walk on, but fire pit was still underwater & we would have to navigate those boards to go to the restroom in the middle of the night!

We went to the office again & asked if there was another cabin for us to move to; the manager said there was but it would be $100 upgrade!!   We asked if he would be negotiable as our cabin wasn't safe.   The manager kicked our family of 5 out, with the words.....good luck finding another place to stay in West Yellowstone this time of year!!    Luckily, we found, Hibernation Station in town - lovely place, fully furnished cabins with bathrooms.   Why anyone would stay at the crappy KOA cabins 7 miles out of town when you can stay at nicely furnish Hibernation Station cabins with bedding, private bathroom, fully equiped ktichen, walking distance to restaurants & wonderful management.    Shame on KOA for not ensuring better management.

      Yellowstone Dreamin Camp

      Glamping with a View

We were in need of a place to stay while attending a field seminar in Yellowstone.  It is about a 30 min drive to Gardiner/Entrance to Yellowstone.  The owners have experience in the hospitality industry and it shows inside the tent.  We stayed in the Elk because we wanted a private bathroom. The room had 2 beds (super comfortable and well dressed), refrigerator, couch,  writing table and electric fireplace (more for ambiance vs really providing a lot of heat) and still very roomy. They provide a little lantern for night walks to bathroom or back to tent if you don't have your own flash light.   The deck off the front was ideal for sitting or practicing yoga.  You do have to walk to the bathroom/showers.  While we didn't have the opportunity to use the 2 community fire pits or horseshoes, butthey were well placed with a beautiful backdrop of mountains.  There is also a small building with a coffee/tea machine and another small refrigerator.  You can park right next to the tent.

If you want to take a walk, there are some dirt roads to walk by other surrounding farms.

The tents a pretty dispersed and seemed fairly private.  There was only one other couple on the premises so not sure when it is a full house.  They offer really nice kennels.

My only ding is they have a few kinks to work out, but I feel they will figure it out.  They will be offering speciality breakfasts in the future, but now they are just store bought muffins with yogurt and orange juice.  The location gets you off the highway, but you do need to navigate a gravel road for about a mile.  Totally drivable for any car.

I think if I stayed here again I would take one of their guiding trips.

      Madison Arm Resort

      Escape on the Lake

I would love to give this campground 5 stars - the hosts were lovely. It's a beautiful, peaceful piece of property. Lots of trees, surrounded by mountains and a glass lake. If you are tent camping, there are gorgeous sites along the water and you get amazing sunset views each night. HOT showers, laundry facilities, and an outdoor kitchen for cleaning your catch if you head out on the lake. Ladies bathroom needs some better ventilation, but the showers were a nice size.

If you are RVing and staying here to spend your days touring Yellowstone… you just have to take note. It's a long, bumpy 5 mile drive into the camp (making it wonderfully quiet!). It was fine the first day, but it got old, especially after driving around Yellowstone all day. They also, if needed, pack the RVs in some weird spots. Where we thought it was a through road next to us, ended up being a RV spot later in the week…and we lost our pretty sunset views. It also was awkward for both of us as we were perpendicular to them.

If you plan on spending more than 4 nights there, you will love the serene getaway of it! If you are only there to sleep while visiting Yellowstone, you will find its location a bit of a hassle.

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park — Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

      Great for Families

We had a great stay in the last weekend of May. Our site had electric hook-ups, and walking distance to the really nice playground.

Campground has potable water filling and dump station. NOTE $5 fee to dump; cash or check!

Campground also had a group site area and day use pavilion, shower house and vault toilets. Only a 5 min drive up to the caves. Campground is essentially flat with trees scattered throughout; could find some shade near your site, but direct line of sight to pretty much all the other RVs at the campground.

      Campfire Lodge Resort

Perhaps the nicest campground we have stayed at.

Let's be honest, Campfire Lodge & RV is not the cheapest place to stay. And, it's obvious why when you stay there. The upkeep is top notch. The RV pads are graded roadbase. Fire pits and tables for each spot. the spot we stayed in had full 30 amp hook-ups. Tall pine trees. And, a stones throw from the Madison River. What an amazing place to sit and relax.

The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch. Bring your appetite and prepare yourself for an amazing breakfast or lunch. If you're a fly tyer the collection of hackle is off the charts.

Close to Yellowstone NP, fishing on the Madison River, exploring West Yellowstone to Ennis Montana and so much more! What a great place. We'll be back for sure.

      Red Cliff Campground

Clean but crowded on the Gallatin

I booked 2 nights on Recreation.gov less than 3 weeks in advance. I was camping while working an event in Big Sky.

The campground is quite large, and this time of year, completely full every night. It is right on the river and very close to the highway. This means it is not quiet. Still, it’s 10 minutes to Big Sky, clean and well equipped. Overall a good choice in this area if you can make a reservation.

There are bear-safe food storage lockers, fire rings, and picnic tables at each camp site. Long before the bears eat you, the mosquitoes and deer flies will. Bug spray advised. Pit toilets are well-used but reasonably clean. The on-site hosts make sure to mark reservation cards on each site, and put signs at the entrance when the campgrounds is full. This kept traffic inside the campground to a minimum. Much appreciated.

    Guide to Big Sky

Glamping close to Big Sky, Montana ranges from rustic forest cabins to amenity-rich resort sites, all providing strategic access to regional attractions. Located in the Gallatin River valley at elevations between 6,500-7,500 feet, this area experiences dramatic temperature drops at night even in summer months. Spring conditions often include snow into June, while fall camping typically ends by early October when overnight temperatures consistently fall below freezing.

    What to do

Cave exploration: 5 minutes from Red Cliff Campground. The campground provides access to interesting geological features within walking distance. "Not a bad places to get away for a quick trip. Some good fishing on the Gallatin river and even a cool cave to check out on the right side of the camp ground," notes Shawn S.

Rock climbing: Suitable for various skill levels. Red Cliff Campground offers developed climbing routes ranging from beginner to advanced. "The Cliffs themselves are developed for rock climbing with bolted sport routes from 5.6 up to 5.11 and 5.12," explains TMB.

Winter skiing access: 4 mile trek required. For winter adventurers willing to ski in, Spanish Creek Cabin provides winter access with some effort. "4 mile ski in from the gate with some gentle up and down grades, traveling on an unplowed road. Easy to find," shares Amy H.

Mountain hiking: Multiple trailhead options. The area features numerous hiking paths with varied difficulty levels. "Lots of trailheads near the campgrounds. I'd recommend Garnet Mtn; great views at the top!" says Albert V. about camping near Spire Rock.

    What campers like

Creek sounds: Natural white noise. Many visitors appreciate the natural soundscape provided by running water. "Creek was running in winter, can hear it at night with the window open a crack," one visitor noted about Spanish Creek Cabin.

Proximity to Yellowstone: 30-minute drive. Beaver Creek Campground offers a strategic location for park visitors without the crowds. "From West Yellowstone, the campground is about a half hour drive along the beautiful Hebgen Lake," says Gia R.

Electrical sites near water: Best of both worlds. Some campgrounds offer powered sites with natural beauty. "This time, we camped in the section right along the river with electric hookups—such a great spot. Water is available at nearby spigots, and our site had plenty of space plus a small trail that led down to the river," reports Stefanie I. about Red Cliff.

Bear safety infrastructure: Secure storage provided. Campgrounds in this region take wildlife safety seriously. "Our site (C22) was surprisingly quiet and secluded despite being in the middle of the loop. While we didn't have our own bear locker, there was one nearby which appeared to be communal," notes Gia R. about Beaver Creek Campground.

    What you should know

Bear country precautions: Required by law. All food must be properly stored in hard-sided vehicles or provided bear boxes. "BEAR SAFE FOOD STORAGE IS REQUIRED BY LAW. Bear boxes are provided at many sites, or lock up your stuff in a hard-sided vehicle. You may see elk, deer and bear," warns TMB about camping at Red Cliff.

Road conditions: Seasonal challenges. Access roads to some sites can be difficult depending on weather and vehicle type. "The dirt road was so pockmarked we had to turn w... The area is stunning, but we could not get to the campground. Our campervan felt like it was going to tip over because of the ruts," reports p M. about Spire Rock Campground.

Site spacing: Varies by location. Some campgrounds offer more privacy than others. "Red Cliff was very clean. The camp hosts were nice, but it is a very tight campground. There is a lower and an upper level. We had a great experience here, but expect to see your neighbors a bit," explains Ashley S.

Limited cell coverage: Prepare accordingly. Many glamping sites have poor or nonexistent mobile service. "No cellular service, at least no T-Mobile connection," notes Marc M. about Red Cliff Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Group sites: Available for larger gatherings. Spire Rock Campground offers spaces specifically for family groups. "We had a great experience! We took our whole family, multiple tents, and dogs. We were in one of the group sites (#2) with creek access in our site it was perfect," shares Jeni W.

Kid-friendly water play: Safe creek access. Shallow creeks provide safe natural entertainment for children. "This campground is very nice, next to Langohr Creek. Kids play in creek and build rock dams. Nice walk around campground," explains Davis A.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early morning best. Families can observe local animals from safe distances. "We had site 20 which is right on the water! Beautiful lake. Well maintained sites and roads," notes James D. about Hood Creek Campground.

Winter family options: Cabin comfort. Spanish Creek Cabin provides a family-friendly winter option with bunk beds and loft accommodations. "Cute, clean cabin. Sleeps four, a bunk bed and two more beds in a loft," shares Amy H.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Placement matters. For RVs, the location within a campground can significantly impact experience. "Depending on the loop, this is a nice site. Our reservation was for B2,3 which were down in a heavily treed section with no sun. Camp hosts were very accommodating and moved us to B12, with sun and a view too," advises Sarah N. about Beaver Creek Campground.

Water fill considerations: Plan ahead. Some RV sites have limited water access. "Fresh water is available but note that there is no grey water dump in Big Sky, so you'll need to drive on to West Yellowstone or north," warns Kait J.

Electric hookup availability: Limited but present. Electricity-dependent RVers should know where powered sites exist. "Sights 1-26 have electric, and all sights feel private," notes Soren B. about Red Cliff Campground.

Road narrowness alerts: Proceed with caution. Some access roads pose challenges for larger rigs. "A word of caution about the road driving in. The road is paved but narrow, so drive slow and watch out for cars," explains Dexter I.
