What to do
Hiking opportunities: Klondike Park features multiple hiking trails through unique white sand topography. "The park is beautiful. Located about 25 minutes from St Louis. The views around the pond are amazing. There is a sandy beach area surrounding the water, making it a great place either lay in the sun or to go fishing," notes Joseph F.
Mountain biking access: Greensfelder County Park offers well-maintained trails specifically designed for mountain biking. "The park is known for its well-groomed trails, which are used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians alike. Plenty of stables surround the area, where you may rent a horse and go for a stroll through the woods," according to Lucas M.
Katy Trail biking: Beyond the Trail RV Park provides direct access to Missouri's famous Katy Trail. "The Katy trail is right next to the campground for walking or biking. There is also a really nice brewery right at the entrance. Within walking distance is a really nice winery and a couple bars," says Adam F.
What campers like
River access: Robertsville State Park Campground offers boat launch facilities on the Meramec River. "There's also a lake within a few minutes walking, although the current was too strong to swim we were told it's home to many large catfish," explains Ana B.
Cabin variety: The Jellystone Park near Six Flags provides multiple cabin options beyond standard camping. "You can go from rustic rent a tent to a really nice cabin with lots amenities!! We will be back!!" shares Mike T.
Proximity to wineries: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Valley Park position campers near Missouri wine country. "This is just a great park. It is located in a sleepy little winery town. It is just a few minutes from the main part of town with multiple beautiful wineries within a few miles," remarks Jamie C. about Beyond the Trail RV Park.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Seasonal flooding can impact camping availability at lower elevation sites. "While we were there they had a record rainfall amount and the park apparently already has flooding issues so it was flooding pretty bad," reports Charlie & Danielle B. about Covered Bridge RV Park.
Reservation requirements: St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park maintains limited availability during peak seasons. "Called to make sure they had sites available before we came. The staff is SUPER NICE AND CARING. Example 1: There was some rough springtime weather expected one day. A park ranger went around to every site and notified every camper of where the shelters were," mentions Mats.
Noise levels: Highway and train sounds can be noticeable at some campgrounds. "Can hear highway traffic....a lot. Small campsites, very close to neighbors. Fairly steep grade, especially right out our camper door was a big drop off," notes GW C. about Jellystone Park.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-focused activities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort At Six Flags offers programmed children's entertainment. "Great kids activities! Good breakfast and nice store. Really enjoyed our trip bundled with a Six Flags trip," shares Erin P.
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "You are a stones throw away from Katy trail which will take you to downtown St. Charles. The trail is about 1.5-2 miles to get to downtown. You can bike or walk there," explains Brian A. about Sundermeier RV Park.
Family-friendly trails: Select campgrounds with short, manageable trails for young hikers. "There are two trail heads on opposite sides of the camping lot, and the trails were well marked," notes Annie C. about Greensfelder County Park.
Tips from RVers
Hookup variations: Sundermeier RV Park provides concrete pads with full hookups near downtown St. Charles. "This is a easy to access, quite campground. Full hookups, concrete pads. No firepits. Close to a bunch of stuff. Fast wifi," reports Aaron A.
Site challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring additional equipment. "The spots are a little close together and not many trees but I've been to worse. The not many trees is due to it still being a fairly new campground," explains Barbie B. about St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park.
RV storage options: Long-term parking and storage options exist near Valley Park. "This is well maintained park with plenty of activities and close to all the luxuries that a town can offer, lots of amenities nearby or on site," says Lucas M. about his experience at one of the dog friendly campgrounds near Valley Park.
