    Rutlader Outpost RV Park

    Great Campground

We’re from Kansas City and there are very few options when it comes to Campgrounds. This is by far our favorite and their rates are very reasonable. We enjoyed our stay, staff was very friendly and the park was clean and easy to get in and out of. You’re also very close to Hillsdale State Park, but this location has a tornado shelter 🤣

The park: great store, laid out well, gravel sites. Some are back in but most are pull through. Full hook ups- power/water/sewer.

72 Sites: 30' wide, 60' long and level 24 Sites are pull thru All have 30 & 50 amp service

You are within 40 minutes of southern Overland Park, and within approximately an hour (depending on traffic) to Kansas City.

Amenities: Laundry Storm Shelter Showers Meeting room available for RV Rallies (Must Schedule) Fishing Lake

Cellular: service was good, able to stream video, work, Facebook, etc.

Rates as of April 2020 (from their site):

-DAY RATE: $45.00 -CLUB RATE: $40.00 (Good Sam's, FMCA, AAA, Military) -WEEKLY: $215 -MONTHLY: $575 Back In $700 Pull Through (if not paid by due date, Day Rate will apply.)

    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

Sunflower Campground — Hillsdale State Park

    Very Clean and Very Relaxing

The Park: We love this park, it’s massive, and really pretty. They have so much to do (listed below). Sunflower Loop is our favorite and has full hookups. There are more primitive loops as well. It is ADA accessible. There was not a tornado shelter as of 2018. This is one thing that should be mandatory given its proximity and being further away from potential shelter. Excellent camping on the lake. Lots of water activities available.

Sites: level, clear, easily accessible. Sunflower loop is widely spaced and plenty of room for larger RVs.

    Cellular: decent cellular signal.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

    Peculiar Park Place

    Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

    Peculiar Park Place

    Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

Guide to Lee's Summit

Near Lee's Summit, Missouri, RV campers can access campgrounds with varying amenities and site conditions within a 45-minute drive radius. Most campgrounds in this area sit at elevations between 800-1,000 feet, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 70-90°F. Winter camping options remain available at several year-round facilities, though amenities may be limited during colder months.

What to do

Visit historic sites: Fort Osage RV Park provides convenient access to the Fort Osage National Historic Landmark, a reconstructed early 19th-century military outpost overlooking the Missouri River. The fort offers living history demonstrations during summer months.

Explore urban Kansas City: Campus RV Park serves as a strategic base for city exploration. "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers," notes reviewer Wendy T.

Attend sporting events: RVers often use local campgrounds for Chiefs games access. "3 nights here. Centrally located, great views, lovely staff, laundry and restroom facilities were good also... Good hookups that worked and WiFi worked very well," writes Kelly D. about her stay at Campus RV Park while attending a Chiefs game.

Fishing opportunities: Lake Paradise Resort offers multiple fishing spots on their property. "We camped here in September 2020. There are nice spots right by the lakes with big trees for shade. Roads going up higher past us were a little rough but made for great walks with kids. Kids found tons of frogs and snails to play with," reports Brandi D.

What campers like

Swimming amenities: Lake Paradise Resort features an extensively renovated pool. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," describes Julie B.

Clean facilities: Basswood Country RV Resort maintains well-kept common areas. "The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level," notes Drew S. Another camper adds, "Very clean bathhouses and property, friendly staff, nice pool, great fishing, fun family activities, nice camp store/pizza kitchen."

Internet connectivity: Several campgrounds offer reliable WiFi for remote workers. "We're in #22 - with wifi access point right here. 66m down, 24m up. It was so good (and the park is full) I did not bother testing my mobile plans," mentions Kevin H. about Campus RV Park.

Budget-friendly options: Mayview RV Park provides an economical camping alternative. "Can't beat $20 a night for full hookup. Small park right next to it that the kids enjoyed. 20 sites total but less than half were occupied," writes Rocio C.

What you should know

Noise considerations: Many RV sites near Lee's Summit, Missouri experience noise from nearby transportation. "This park is convient to I-29 but far enough off the highway to be quiet and peaceful," notes Sara E. about Basswood Country RV Resort. However, some locations aren't as fortunate: "Hope you like airplanes!!! Not too far from KCI and planes making their final decent fly right over top."

Seasonal operations: Some campgrounds have limited availability. Worlds of Fun Village operates from March through October with varying rates based on amusement park schedules.

Site size variations: Walnut Grove RV Park offers different site options. "We did pay for the premium pull through site, so we had more room. Everything worked great, the spot was on a slight hill- but wasn't terrible to level out," explains Mary.

Urban location characteristics: Some campgrounds have an urban feel. "On the way in the neighborhood itself did not seem very likely to hold an RV park this close to urban areas. But the place is nice, has Laundry, Showers etc. No campfire pit, and our spot was a tight fit, but seems nice," mentions Luna L. about Campus RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Seek out playground facilities: Basswood Country RV Resort offers multiple child-friendly areas. "Awesome sites with full hook ups. They have several ponds you can fish from. My kids love that. Nice play area for kids as well as themed weekends with lots of activities planned that kids can do," reports Robin R.

Find shaded campsites: Summer heat makes shade valuable. "There are nice spots right by the lakes with big trees for shade," notes a Lake Paradise camper. These shaded sites provide relief during hot summer days when temperatures often exceed 85°F.

Look for organized activities: Worlds of Fun Village offers structured recreation. "Super cute big facility. Built on a hillside adjacent to the amusement and water park. The camp ground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," writes Jennifer H.

Consider off-season visits: Lower crowds improve experiences. "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad," explains Deb M. about Worlds of Fun Village.

Tips from RVers

Evaluate hookup options: Many campgrounds offer full hookup sites. "Full hook ups, concrete pads, showers and laundry," mentions one Campus RV Park reviewer. Compare amperage options (30/50) based on your specific RV requirements.

Check water quality: Some areas boast exceptional water. "First off, the water in Independence MO top 10 in the world over time, and in #3 currently," shares Kevin H. about Campus RV Park - an important consideration for filling tanks.

Confirm pet policies: Owl Creek Market and RV Park welcomes pets with designated areas. "Have laundry facilities, a dog run, bathrooms and access to dumpster," notes Bridget U. However, policies vary between campgrounds, with some restricting pets entirely.

Consider site leveling needs: Many reviewers mention leveling challenges. "Sites were gravel and level with FHU," reports one Walnut Grove camper, while others note concrete pads that require minimal adjustment.
