Washington County, Missouri surrounds Herculaneum with rolling hills and dense forests at elevations ranging from 400-1,000 feet. The area experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F, while winters can drop below freezing. Fall camping offers the most moderate temperatures with colorful foliage, while summer campers should prepare for thunderstorms that can develop rapidly.
What to do
Hiking ancient trails: At Hawn State Park Campground, trails wind through pine forests and rocky terrain. "The hiking in this state park is fantastic. The eco-system is something to marvel and we would have loved to see it in the summer," notes Chad K. Another visitor adds, "Nowhere else in the state of Missouri have I been able to camp and feel like I'm in the middle of the Rocky Mountains."
River recreation: The Big River at St. Francois State Park Campground offers fishing and swimming spots. "It has decent camping sites and they are right next to the river and swimming holes. The hiking trails are a few of my favorites in MO," shares Kristen R. The park connects to multiple water access points for kayaking or floating.
Cave exploration: Meramec Caverns Natural Campground provides unique underground adventures. "The cave tour is a bit hokey, but if you can look past the mannequins and silliness, the caves themselves are really spectacular. You can definitely see why Jesse and Frank James used this as a hideout," explains a visitor. Tours run hourly from 9am-4pm during peak season.
What campers like
Historic sites: Washington State Park Campground features Native American petroglyphs that date back centuries. "The prehistoric Petroglyphs nearby are a must see," recommends Phil W. Another camper notes, "This park is so rich in Missouri and USA history - from buildings constructed by the African-American CCC stonemasons to Native American petroglyphs."
Fall camping: The autumn season transforms the landscape. "Great time of year to visit! Surrounded by trees changing colors the fall is beautiful here. The campground has several hiking trails and also river access to go canoeing," shares Lindsey R. about Washington State Park. Fall weekends fill quickly, so midweek reservations are easier to secure.
Yurt accommodations: Yurt camping near Herculaneum, Missouri provides comfort while maintaining an outdoor experience. At St. Louis West/Historic Route 66 KOA, "This was such a nice and serene setting. Close to the city and local attractions, yet surrounded by nature none the less," reports Todd P. Their yurts include beds, electricity and access to full shower facilities.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Summer storms can impact camping plans. "December Camp: Loved the campground! However, lesson learned to reserve a campsite further from the road. Great hiking trails. Fishing not so much," advises David T. about winter conditions at Washington State Park.
Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby attractions or highways. At Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort At Six Flags, "I gave this campground a 4 star instead of 3 because I feel like if you're camping here you should know not to expect 'isolated camping' with sounds of running rivers and wildlife," explains one camper. "Can hear highway traffic....a lot," they add.
Reservation timing: During peak seasons, especially near St. Louis, campsites fill quickly. "The campground has oddly shaped campsites causing a crowded feel. The campground is also loud on the weekends especially if there are races at the nearby Bonne Terre drag strip," warns a camper about St. Francois State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Greensfelder County Park offers family-friendly amenities. "For those who need to get out of town yet can't imagine not checking the latest tweet, Tik Tok, or Instagram post, this park is for you. Not 2 miles from Six Flags, and 5 minutes from the freeway, you'll find plenty of beauty, creature comfort amenities, and cell service," writes Lucas M.
Swimming spots: Safe water recreation areas help kids cool off. "Lots to do for all ages, including swimming and hikes of any difficulty/length. Famous for petroglyphs and other history too," shares Lynn G. about Washington State Park.
Yurt camping for beginners: Herculaneum area yurt camping provides an entry point for families new to camping. "There is a pool, bike rentals, dog park, movie night, basketball court, and more. You can bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or stay in a cabin," explains a visitor about amenities at Route 66 KOA, which also offers yurts.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: At St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, site location matters. "The nicest spots are the ones by the lake, with only one neighbor and a better view of the lake," advises Suzie S. "The campsites are 'state-park-size', especially the back-in sites which all have plenty of lawns behind them."
Hookup availability: Check campground utilities before booking. "Small campground ground ran by saint louis county parks. Only sites 20-29 have electric and 28 can't be reserved," notes Matthew H. about Greensfelder County Park. He adds, "No water at sites, no 50 amps, no dump but KOA and RV dealer 5-7 mins away."
Accessibility concerns: Some parks have challenging terrain. At Jellystone, "There is a very large hill to get in and some sites are VERY tight," warns Cassondra P. Always call ahead for specific site dimensions when bringing larger rigs.
