    Overview

Red Bluff Campground is named for towering red bluffs along Huzzah Creek, carved by the elements over the past 10,000 years. The area used to be home to timber mills, but now provides a serene spot for camping and enjoying nature. Early settlement of the area surrounded the Boyer Mill constructed around 1830. Railroads created a thriving timber industry till the supply was depleted. The land was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service in 1940 and has been used as a recreation area. Red Bluff is located in the Potosi-Fredericktown Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest. Large, red bluffs on the opposite side of Huzzah Creek, gravel bars along the creek, a mixture of pools and riffles and natural vegetation provide a backdrop for a very relaxing camping experience. Wading and swimming in Huzzah Creek are enjoyed by visitors. The water can be swift-moving at times and rocks and drop-offs are not marked. Fishing is also popular in the area and anglers can expect to find bass, sunfish, suckers, and catfish. Three new camping loops were constructed above the Huzzah Creek floodplain Ridge Top Loop, Creek Loop, and Group Loop - each of which have modern restrooms, water, and electricity on 2023. A new shower house, a dump station, and second pavilion were also added for visitor convenience. Camping spurs are variable in size and layout to accommodate recreational vehicles and trailers of all types. A fourth camping loop, Pines Overlook, was renovated but remains a non-electric loop.

    Recreation

Many sites are within 200 yards of Huzzah Creek, where tubing and swimming are enjoyed by visitors. The water can be swift-moving at times and rocks and drop-offs are not marked. Fishing is also popular in the area and anglers can expect to find bass, perch and catfish. The Red Bluff Trail lies within the boundaries of the campground. It is a 1.2-mile loop that winds through a pine plantation and big oak timber, into an adjoining hollow before returning to the campground. The short trail provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a variety of ecological communities, while reaping the benefits of a half-hour of hiking.

    Natural Features

Large, red bluffs on the opposite side of Huzzah Creek, gravel bars along the creek, a mixture of pools and riffles and natural vegetation provide a backdrop for a very relaxing camping experience at the campground. Great place to camp on the Berryman Trail

Good access to the Berryman Trail. There is a creek running along the camping area with a road along the opposite side. Park for the day or camp overnight to get an early start. Make sure you stop in Sullivan or Bourbon, MO for supplies. This site is pretty remote from any services.

    St. Francois State Park Campground

    Nice Place to get away

Not a huge campground but, Its a really simple beautiful place to enjoy Missouri's rolling hills. It is located 1 hour from St. Louis and 30 ish min from Elephant Rock State park. If your in the area check out the other amazing Missouri state parks while staying here. The Missouri Mines state park is maybe a 5 min drive and a neat place to see. Tent sites, Bathroom and some hammock spots.

Quiet camping, hiking, petroglyphs in MO hills

This park is so rich in Missouri and USA history - from buildings costructed by the African-American CCC stonemasons to Native American petroglyphs, there's some fascinating stuff here. The campgrounds are a bit rocky like, but each has a picnic table and fire pit, and they sit on the hills of a beautiful Missouri pineforest. Big River runs through this park, so there's some great swimming and fishing here, and there are three hiking trails of varying difficulty, so most people can do whatever. No supplies are available onsite, so bring everything you need!

    A hidden gem in Missouri

Washington State Park is a hidden gem in Missouri! We camped in mid-March 2021 for 7 days and thoroughly enjoyed the area. They had just opened a new shower house which was clean and well kept. The campground hosts were especially helpful and friendly. The prehistoric Petroglyphs nearby are a must see.

    Specia Use Site

We utilized the special use area of the campground for our Cub Scout family camp, but visited the main loop during our trip.

Best campground hosts we ever encountered! Knowledgeable and friendly. The park has a pool, river access, canoe & kayak rentals and miles of great trails. Great program for kids on staying out of they get lost presented by hosts. This is a great park for organized groups, with lots to do!

Shower house was clean and convenient. Hands down one of Missouri’s best!

Tip- check out the petroglyph site.

    St. Francois State Park Campground

    A wonderful state park campground...

St. Francis is a beautiful Missouri state park, not to mention campground.  It features many access points to its anchor, the BIg River, picnic areas, multiple pavilions and some fantastic trails.  I grew up here, and I am biased toward it, but we camped many places, and it remains one of my favorites then, and now.  The campground has more of a communal vibe, for better or worse, depending on your perspective.  If privacy is your main concern, you may be better served looking elsewhere, but I have always enjoyed the friends I have made there, both young and old due to the proximity of the campsites and the many programs offered there by the Conservation Department.

    Hazel Creek Campground

    Great campsite

This site was probably my favorite one in Missouri so far. Has a few sites that are great for groups. Then a few sites that are more private for solo/family camps. Fire pit/lantern hooks/tables at the sites. No cell service for both my AT&T and Verizon phones. No restrooms. Only negative I could say about the site would be the other campers that have stayed before me. There was trash I had to police up left by other campers. The fire ring was still hot with a burning log. Bring a shovel if you’re going to camp here and want to have a fire. The fire rings were full with ash. Will have to clean out the rings to have a safe fire. Don’t think they are maintained that well.

    Meramec Caverns

    Quiet and Relaxing

We really enjoyed this campground. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Check-in was very easy and we were met at the gate. They drove us over to our spot and brought us over a firepit. The electrical box was setup correctly and everything worked as expected. Water hookup was very close as well and water pressure was strong. As an FYI, we did have to use a regulator to reduce the water pressure.

We were able to stay right along the river. We had arrived a little too early in the camping season and we happened to pick days where Missouri had a cold front (previous weekend was warm). Even with the cold weather, we were able to really enjoy the trip and get our RV ready for the upcoming season.

The camping spots are basically just spots in a big parking lot layout. It is fully paved, but during busy season, you would be very close to other rigs. The park is beautiful and a very short walk over to the cave and ziplines. There is easy access to the river and you are able to easily put in your kayak or small boat. Restroom, showers and trash were a short walk as well.

We will return to this site.

    Nice place, clean

We stayed there for a scout event. They had hot showers and bathroom which is always a plus. There was a little trash at the site but nothing bad.

We had a ton of room between us and others. We could choose our site. I appreciate that quiet hours were enforced.

    Hiking, caves

We stayed just one night but were impressed with the lovely spot. The night was cold, but temps rise quickly after sunrise. We walked the Walking Fern trail, just half a mile but offered varied terrain and its own cave. We were sorry that the Fisher Cave was closed for the season, and the store and grill was only open on the weekend. Would definitely come back.

Neat location; didn’t love rv spots

The area as a whole is neat. The primitive sites are spacious and lovely. We have an rv with 50amp service and essentially, we were on a converted parking lot next to a pavilion. The sites facing the river were a bit nicer.

There is security that drives around to check on everyone which is nice and the camp store was super convenient.

Additionally, the river was amazing. We got down early to ensure we had a spot for our chairs and umbrella. Our kiddos played (with life vests) for 8 hours straight. The river can be dangerous there but if you respect it and have life vests, it makes for an amazing day.

    Fun for the whole family!

Our whole (cousins and everyone) met her for a week long vacation and we had a blast. The cabins were clean and the Murphy beds allowed for so much space when we weren't sleeping. We went rafting down the river and the kids had so much fun playing in the woods and swimming. It was a great trip. We are already talking about planning another one.

Great first camping trip for kids

I took my daughter and a friend on their first camping trip here. We stayed the last weekend of the season (10/29-31). It was quiet with only two RVs on one end. We picked a tent site at the other end, right on the river. The girls ran all over the camp ground. The ranger was super friendly and shared information about the area. Since it was the end of the season, the coyotes were coming back closer to the area and serenaded us all night. We can't wait to go again next year

    Nice Campsite along the River

We were happy to be able to find space available on short notice, especially with lockdown restrictions being lifted. Basic sites are first come first serve, and the security guards come round in the evening to register you.

First timers should definitely consider the cave tour or float trip on site, but if on a budget I would stick to the camping.

    Our Appreciation

We are a combat military family and Meramec Caverns was so great to accommodate for my husbands PTSD. This is our first time camping since 2005 and part of my husbands therapy is to get OUT and get back to what feels safe. So we made the necessary sacrifices to buy a reliable truck and camper and decided to go camping. As part of his therapy, he is working on doing things outside his current comfort zone. The staff put us on an end spot farther from the high traffic high noise area. We were close to the beach, but further from the noise. The lot was clean and level. We used water and electricity and it was great. They have a ton of really cool stuff to do; it’s a little pricey, but will be great memories. The bath houses were relatively clean and the toilets weren’t bad at all, there was plenty of toilet paper. There is a lot of shade for the tent campers, but a bit less for the trailer campers. But there are trees and there is some shade. They have a store well stocked with supplies, but for the prices, make sure you have everything you need because the closest Walmart is about 10-15 minutes away. The people were amazing and we would definitely like to go back again soon!

    4.5 STARS!!

My son and I have stayed here multiple times. We love it! The campgrounds are clean and beautiful, and even during peak times the people that stay are usually very friendly, as are the rangers when they make their nightly rounds. There are some amenities, a small restaurant and gift store and the cave tour is really cool although a little pricey. All in all its a fantastic little hideaway. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because sometimes the park closes or they have to evacuate due to the quick rise of the river. Easy fix though, just call ahead to see if they're open

    Meramec Caverns

Great Place to camp and enjoy!

This was our first trip in our camper and a first camp at Meramec Caverns.

The staff is friendly and helpful. Security patrols around the clock and doesn't put up with any ridiculousness.

Campsites available on pavement, gravel for campers and RVs and grass for tents. Our site had 30/50 amp service and water on a gravel site facing the Meramec River. It waa a beautiful view!

Shower house and restroom facilities are clean and maintained.

A dump station is located just outsIde the main gate of the campgrounds.

Because of the location, there is no wifi and we had no cell service for the majority of our stay. Once in a while it would get a signal but it was very brief.

Campsites are separated from the Meramec Caverns tourist attractions so there is not constant traffic coming through the campsite.

Most campsites had a stone fire ring, bbq grill, and picnic table.

The cave tour, zipline, boat ride, canoe and float trips and motel are all within short walking distance from the campgrounds.

The campground store has ice, firewood and basics available. The gift shop at the cave has typical tourist items available. The restaurant is more of a snack bar and not a full service restaurant, so don't rely on it for your meals during your stay!

The cave tour is interesting and informative and on a hot day the 60 degree temp of the cave is the perfect place to hang out for a while!

Overall, a very nice place to camp and enjoy the outdoors without being too far from home.

We will definitely be back for another stay!

Pretty nice place to camp and stay

I enjoyed the cave, but the tour was much more cheesy than Onondaga cave. I also thought the zip line was a cool thing to have. Thankfully, everything from the flood a couple years back has been cleaned up!

    Meramec Caverns

Fun for families but not our scene

Stayed here two nights mid Labor Day weekend, so it was quite busy, crowded and noisy. The Caverns themselves are a very cool experience but the campground itself isn’t ideal. It’s first come first serve, no designated spots, so some people do end up close to each other.

    Meramec Caverns

    Jesse James hideout camping

This is a private campground run by Meramec Caverns. The campground is large and shaded, right on the river. There are hook up sites and tent sites. My advice is to try and get a spot all the way to the left of the entrance. These sites seem quieter and more spread out. The down side is that they are pretty far from the shower house and bathrooms. Most of this sites (but not all) have picnic tables, grills and fire pits. There are a few really nice sites right on the river. There is a restaurant, general store, canoe rental, zip line (it goes across the Meramec River, not sure how you get back!), and of course the caverns. The cave tour is a bit hokey, but if you can look past the mannequins and silliness, the caves themselves are really spectacular. You can definitely see why Jesse and Frank James used this as a hideout.

    Meramec Caverns

    Nice little adventure

This is a nice place to go for a quick adventure with family. Especially on a hot day. A little more expensive than I would expect, but still worth doing at least once. My kids and parents enjoyed our last trip, however there is a spot that was too steep for my dad. They did warn ahead of time when we were coming to that point and he did not miss very much. They have a route around it to catch up and enjoy the light show at the end. Light show is pretty but was also very “AMERICA!” but some people are all about that. They know their crowd I suppose. They have a snack shop with ice cream, zip line across the river, and a boat ride also available but we have not experienced those yet. I would say allow about 2 hours or so for the cave tour.
