This was our first trip together in our new camper. It was a little rough assessing the place thru the website but the reviews swayed us. There are walking paths all around and a beautiful lake /clubhouse area. Super people running the place and of course other campers were so helpful. We took our 2 dogs and would have loved a little more grass for their paws as the entire camping area is rough gravel. We’re hoping for a dog park in the future....? The lake has many easy entrances for swimmers near the club house - broad steps or large boulder for the more adventurous. Can be a bit slippery tho so bring your water shoes. Kids seemed to have little problem. Saturday night there was live music. Just a single guy with a guitar but great choice of music and great singing voice. Had a great 2 days. We plan to come back.
This campground is fairly close to downtown and very close to lots of shopping. A great place to stay to stock up on supplies before heading west. We stayed 2 nights to have a day to visit the Gateway Arch. The pool and playground seemed nice even though we didn’t use them. Nice dog park for smaller dogs. Several cabins are available along with RV sites. The tent sites are next to a river under large trees. Plenty of spaces for big rigs. Our site was no very level but nothing our auto-leveling couldn’t handle.
Large grassy camp sites, dog park and clean restrooms/shower house. Lake is very pretty and great staff.
Nice, clean campground, level pull-through sites - ours had a paver-patio and grill, a lot of shade throughout, dog park, and a creek to explore. This was our 2nd time here. Close to Saint Louis, Six Flags, and hiking.
We had a beautiful campsite with soft grassy ground. We did have a mole or something burrowing around so you had to watch for loose dirt clods but that was NBD. The site had a picnic table and fire ring. There were pit toilets, no showers. Spigots throughout the area. Within walking distance of the river and trail access. Beautiful hiking on the bluffs above the river. The hosts were really friendly. There was also a very cute and very friendly kitty running around the area hunting grasshoppers. He hung out for some pets and cuddles then wandered off for some more adventure. I kind of want to be that cat. ^_^
Easy off I-370, campground is new and large. It is on a lake with bike trails, kayak rental, and kids splash pad. Staff were helpful. I received about 5 pieces of paper when checking in. You need a code to get into the dog park. Shopping nearby. Used this as a base to visit historic St Charles.
This is a KOA, so you know what to expect. Pull through, level sites, lots of shade, dog park, pool, and a creek are all here. Have been here before, will be back!
We stayed one night in campsite 65. Onondaga Cave is amazing with the new lighting; it just reopened July 4, 2024. The river is still fantastic fun, especially for our grandkids ages 9 and 12.
Avoid campsite 65 when it rains. We had over an inch of standing water on the concrete pad when we arrived. 18 hours after it stopped raining, we still had some water on the concrete pad.
Other than the water, Onondaga Cave SP has been one of my favorite places to camp in Missouri for more than 20 years.
Herculaneum, Missouri sits at the western edge of the Mississippi River in Jefferson County, where oak-hickory forests meet limestone bluffs. Elevation ranges from 400-600 feet above sea level, with mild springs and falls providing ideal camping seasons, though summer humidity can reach 80-90%. Local campgrounds typically offer more shaded sites on the western side of the area, with those closer to the river providing easier water access but requiring insect repellent from April through October.
Hike historic trail systems: At Hawn State Park Campground, trails range from easy walks to challenging rocky terrain. "The trails are amazing with big boulders and beautiful creeks. If you're car camping take the extra walk to the walk-in camping sites. It's like a micro backpacking trip," notes Megan M.
Explore natural caves: The cave systems near Meramec State Park Campground offer guided tours for $10-15 per person. "Pay the extra for the caves tour! Down the road there's an old iron foundry and a historic cemetery to explore," recommends Lynn G.
Canoe or kayak local waterways: Rental options available onsite at multiple parks for $25-40 per day. "My husband and i kayaked here and it was amazing! probably the best short trip you could take on a kayak," shares Allyson D. about her experience at Washington State Park.
Fall camping colors: The tree canopy transforms from September through early November. "Green rolling hills that would be ideal to visit in the fall," says Lynn G. about Washington State Park Campground. Another camper confirms: "Surrounded by trees changing colors the fall is beautiful here."
Historical features: The region contains significant archaeological sites. "Washington State Park is a hidden gem in Missouri! The prehistoric Petroglyphs nearby are a must see," notes Phil W. Many campers appreciate the cultural history accessible from camping locations.
Pet-friendly accommodations: Nearly all local campgrounds welcome dogs with standard leash requirements. At Cahokia RV Parque, "Pet-friendly, full hookups, space for our larger rig and parking around for extra vehicle," reports one camper, making it suitable for those seeking pet friendly camping near Herculaneum.
Varied site privacy: Site layout differs significantly between parks. "The electrics sites are closer to the river, the tent sites are more private in trees in a separate area," notes a Washington State Park visitor. Another mentions: "Although the sites are very large, flat, and easy, you can see everyones business because there is maybe 1 tree in between each site."
Wildlife encounters: Local wildlife regularly visits campsites. "We saw deer and raccoons here that entered our campsite," reports a visitor to Meramec State Park. The area has a healthy deer population, so tick prevention is advisable from April through October.
Weekend crowds: Proximity to St. Louis means weekend popularity. At St. Francois State Park Campground, "The campground is also loud on the weekends especially if there are races at the nearby Bonne Terre drag strip," warns Cody S.
Look for swimming areas: Several parks offer water recreation. "Lots to do for all ages, including swimming and hikes of any difficulty/length," says a Washington State Park visitor. When water levels permit, designated swimming areas provide supervised recreation.
Choose parks with playground access: Several locations feature play equipment. At Robertsville State Park Campground, "This is a nice quiet campground but the lots are pretty uneven so make sure you bring plenty of cribbing," advises a family camper who appreciated the "nice shower house and bathroom so that worked great for our large family."
Arrange easy access sites: Some locations offer family-specific areas. "My family and I always reserve the family site. Good cell service," shares Kristine K. about Robertsville State Park, which accommodates larger family groups.
Plan for hookup variations: Not all sites offer full hookups. "The RV hookup sites are close together, with some shade," notes Robert O. "Sites are concrete and gravel, very urban camping."
Check site dimensions first: Many local parks have smaller sites. At Covered Bridge RV Park, "For this to be such a small RV park the sites are very spacious! The wi-fi was surprisingly good enough that my wife and I could both work off of it and even stream shows on the Roku the whole week," shares Charlie.
Consider seasonal flooding: Some areas experience spring water issues. "While we were there they had a record rainfall amount and the park apparently already has flooding issues," warns an RV camper, though they appreciated that "the staff came out while this was happening to warn us of the potential flooding and offered to let us move to another site."
