    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

    Peculiar Park Place

    Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

    Peculiar Park Place

    Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

Clean But Dated With Lots of Long Term Renters

We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites. This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park. The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level.

The Great Escape RV and Camp Resort

    Ok, not great

Stopped here for an overnight on our way home to Georgia from Yellowstone. It’s ok for a 1-night stop. I wouldn’t stay more. The sites are level, with long pull-throughs, with full hookups. But there is no shade. Also no store. There is a grill/bar that serves dinner, drinks and appetizers. Pool, playground, dog park, stocked fishing pond, laundry. Bathroom/shower facilities were ok. Several text sites did have shade.

Guide to Excelsior Springs

RV campgrounds near Excelsior Springs, Missouri provide convenient access to both urban attractions and outdoor recreation opportunities. Located in northwestern Missouri's rolling hills, the region experiences four distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters. The elevation ranges from 700-900 feet above sea level, with many camping areas situated within 30 miles of Kansas City's metropolitan amenities.

What to do

Amusement park access: Campers at Worlds of Fun Village can enjoy discounted theme park tickets and free parking. "The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," notes Jennifer H., while another visitor mentions "the theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included."

Water recreation: Several campgrounds feature lake access for fishing and water activities. At Lake Paradise Resort, campers enjoy "nice spots right by the lakes with big trees for shade." The resort also features "a pool that is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler."

Historic exploration: Independence offers numerous historical attractions within easy reach of camping areas. From Campus RV Park, visitors can explore downtown Independence landmarks. "Independence has some cool stuff to check out and has a very midwestern, small-town feel to it, even though it is basically a suburb of the greater Kansas City area. There is a lot of charm and some interesting architecture in the immediate area," reports Shari G.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Multiple RV campgrounds Excelsior Springs visitors praise facility cleanliness. One camper at A Country Charm RV Park appreciated that "bathrooms were top-notch. Every campground should have the same set up. Handicap accessible, all in one in same room. So great if you have kids or someone with a disability."

Connectivity options: Internet access varies between parks. Campus RV Park offers strong WiFi according to Kevin H.: "We're in #22 - with wifi access point right here. 66m down, 24m up. It was so good (and the park is full) I did not bother testing my mobile plans."

Swimming pools: Several campgrounds feature swimming pools for summer recreation. Lake Paradise Resort includes pool access with camping fees: "Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers," reports Julie B.

What you should know

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience railroad noise. Carolyn M. notes about Campus RV Park: "Only issue was trains blowing their horns during the night." Similarly, at Trailside RV Park, one reviewer mentioned "noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic."

Limited privacy: Many RV parks in the area have closely spaced sites. At Walnut Grove RV Park, Justin G. observed, "spacing is a little tight and the surrounding views are meh at best. Being right off Johnson Drive, there is considerable road noise."

Security considerations: Some campgrounds lack gated access. One Worlds of Fun Village visitor commented: "Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk."

Tips for camping with families

Pool activities: Basswood Country RV Resort offers numerous water activities for children. "We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," reports Shannon G., who adds the resort includes "playgrounds, swimming pool, outdoor games, a game room, volleyball, trails, and even golf carts for rent. Very family friendly place."

Weekend events: Many campgrounds host special activities during peak seasons. At Lake Paradise Resort, one visitor noted: "We went to a movie outside there and fireworks for Memorial Day weekend."

Playground access: Lakeview Campground and RV Park offers recreational facilities adjacent to camping areas. According to Glenda, there's a "nice walking path and playground beside campground with nice water view."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Worlds of Fun Village, site location significantly impacts noise levels. One visitor advises: "Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3."

Level sites: For easier setup, consider campgrounds with concrete pads. Worlds of Fun Village offers "concrete pads with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer," while at Walnut Grove RV Park, visitors should note that sites "were on gravel and very close to each other."

Seasonal considerations: Check operating schedules before booking. Worlds of Fun Village operates seasonally, with one camper noting: "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad."
