Green Acres at Red Brick Farmhouse

    Awesome, Picturesque Camp Site

Small, secluded camp sites on picturesque lawn surrounding 3story red brick farmhouse near Higginsville, MO. Two tent sites. Two or three small RV sites and one parked RV trailer available as a nightly rental. Bathroom with shower available. Water and electric available. Friendly and helpful hosts reside in the big house. There are places to eat nearby. Fire pit with comfortable chairs in corner of yard. Very pleasant stay. Relaxing for the soul.

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

    Clean and quiet

It does cost about $25 a day, but you have electricity, and shade, and it is always quiet here. The park rangers are always cleaning or doing rounds to make sure everything is okay. Bathrooms have AC and are cleaned with disinfectant daily. Very clean campground and has a playground. Pet friendly.

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Peaceful

We stayed Sunday-Wednesday and it was very peaceful. Sites are not right on top of each other and it looks like they all have a fire pit and picnic table. There are only a handful of paved spots and you will need leveling blocks on the gravel. Showers and bathrooms are clean and the hosts are very nice. New asphalt roads throughout the park; nice for walking, biking, etc. Be sure to get biscuits & gravy at “The General Store” just down the road from the park entrance.

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

Lots of campsites, quiet, small lake

Watkins Mill SP is located near Excelsior Springs, MO. It’s a bigger state park and it’s heavily shaded. Lots of campsites and hiking! The lake is “ok” but left little to be desired. The lake is often closed to swimming due to e-coli due to the large goose population. It’s also smallish for kayaking but doable. Nice park for camping and quiet!

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

Crammed in a tent camping field...

Let's Share COVID and a campfire song. When we booked a tent site in the KOA we didn't expect much but assumed it would work for the night while driving across the USA.  Upon arrival we were a little put off by being stuck with several other tents in a field and noticed we were expected to share our fire ring with the tent next door... this was not ok with us and we left promptly and snagged a nice spot in the nearby Blue Springs Recreation Area. Traveling during summer 2020 has been interesting and to expect strangers to share a fire ring and be crammed very close during a pandemic is not only careless but not fun. UGH

    Worlds of Fun Village

    Novel Campground in Kansas City

This was an interesting stay at the Worlds of Fun campground. Located on the property there are RV sites and rental cabins. All RV sites were concrete with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer. Back-in sites on rows 1 and 3 and pull through sites on row 2.

The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two.

There is a pool, hot tub, laundry and clean bathrooms with showers. The campground did attempt to improve privacy with strategically placed trees and shrubs.

Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3.

Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk. Reviews of this campsite on other websites mentioned some petty theft, so we kept our outdoor compartments locked (nothing was stolen).

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A great place to take the kids/grandkids

We have been camping at Basswood for several years, first with our children and now with our grandchildren. Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, includinga swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing. Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie. There is a great little store with alcohol for the adults; ice cream treats, which we enjoy after a swim; and nearly any key item you might have forgotten to pack. Most roads throughout the campground are paved, and the campground is generally well-maintained. We appreciate the full-service RV spots, but there are very nice bathroom facilities, including showers, in two locations in the park.

    Lake Paradise Resort

    A gem being polished!

We had a fun and relaxing time and loved the woodsy feel to it. We stayed here for a weekend in July 2020 and had a great time!  It is under new ownership and they are working to remodel and renovate all areas. I got to meet one of the owners and one of the owner's kids who works there and they were very nice and very helpful.  In fact, all staff I had contact with were! We had a nice full hookup RV site with a very woodsy feel.  Well shaded, grass and trees, view of water and nice space around us. Gravel site with picnic table and fire ring.  The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler. Roads throughout campground are gravel, not paved, if that makes a difference with kids bringing scooters or bikes.  We drove around to see the rest of the campground and saw lots of sites that I'd like to camp in when we come back. The cabins look nice, too. Waved at people sitting in front of them, but did not see inside them.  I'm looking forward to go here again and excited to see the updates they make over the next year!

Note: Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers; so for our family with 4 we had the free passes go to the parents and paid $3 each for the kids to swim & we did this two days.  As long as you have the wrist band on you can come and go all day to the pool.

Cons: quite a bit of poison oak around the fish cleaning area, shade at the pool is at a minimum, my phone (AT&T) could not get service there.

Guide to Excelsior Springs

Cabin accommodations near Excelsior Springs, Missouri vary from rustic bunkhouses to fully-equipped resort-style structures. Located in Missouri's western region at approximately 800 feet elevation, this area experiences distinct seasons with humid summers and moderate winters. The region's cabin rentals offer access to lakes, wooded areas, and proximity to Kansas City attractions while maintaining rural character.

What to do

Fishing at multiple lakes: Watkins Mill State Park Campground features a small lake suitable for kayaking and fishing boats. According to Jason C., "There is a small lake great for kayaking and fishing boats. The swim beach has been closed because of excessive vegetation growth."

Biking on paved trails: The paved trail system at Watkins Mill State Park Campground provides excellent cycling opportunities. "The trail wraps the lake and connects to the edge of the campground," notes Jason C., while Will E. mentions it's a "Great place to fish, kayak, bike ride."

Visit historic sites: Several cabin locations provide access to local history. Josh P. explains, "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," while Jason C. adds, "There is a couple historic sites not far on the side of the lake, quick little drive."

Swimming pool access: Several cabin rentals include pool privileges. At Lake Paradise Resort, Julie B. describes, "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler."

What campers like

Privacy variations between sites: Cabin spacing varies significantly between properties. At Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA, Roy T. notes, "Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer." Conversely, at Green Acres at Red Brick Farmhouse, Frank H. describes "Small, secluded camp sites on picturesque lawn surrounding 3-story red brick farmhouse."

Convenient stopover location: Several cabin rentals serve as ideal overnight stays during longer trips. Deb M. states about Worlds of Fun Village, "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad."

Access to city amenities: Many cabin locations balance natural settings with urban proximity. At Worlds of Fun Village, John L. reports, "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two."

What you should know

Airport noise levels: Some cabins experience aircraft noise. About Basswood Country RV Resort, Brian A. explains, "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be. At least I didn't hear them."

Seasonal operation differences: Not all cabins operate year-round. Worlds of Fun Village operates from "Mar 1 - Oct 30," while Shannon G. notes about Basswood Country RV Resort: "We needed a place to stop over and stumbled upon Basswood Resorts on our way back from the Ozarks. It had full hookups, and even wifi and cable."

Pool access policies: Many properties have specific pool access rules. Julie B. explains about Lake Paradise Resort: "Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers; for our family with 4 we had the free passes go to the parents and paid $3 each for the kids to swim."

Security considerations: Safety measures vary between properties. John L. notes about Worlds of Fun Village: "Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk."

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Look for cabins with organized activities. About Basswood Country RV Resort, Tori G. shares, "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie."

Playground facilities: Many locations offer dedicated children's play areas. Robin R. mentions, "This campground is a must for anyone with children. Awesome sites with full hook ups. They have several ponds you can fish from. My kids love that. Nice play area for kids as well as themed weekends with lots of activities planned that kids can do."

Long-term residents: Be aware some locations have permanent residents. Drew S. notes, "Prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites. This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park."

Weather considerations: Seasonal cabin comfort varies significantly. Joel R. shares about Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA: "The sites were all sunny and since it was 100 degrees, it was hot. But the pool was nice and they had a nice dog park which was ok in the evening after it cooled off."

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: Cabin campers should note proximity issues at some campgrounds. Ashley S. explains about Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA, "Our friends stayed in the cabins which are awesome. The RV sites were right on top of each other so would not great. Very little green space but had a lot of amenities and the cleanest bathrooms!"

Pull-through advantages: Certain sites offer better space and views. E C. recommends at Worlds of Fun Village: "Pay more for the pull through you'll have tons of parking even if your rig is big. Our rig is 44 ft and we parked two 2500's on the pad no problem."

Road conditions: Internal roads vary in quality. Julie B. notes about Lake Paradise Resort: "Roads throughout campground are gravel, not paved, if that makes a difference with kids bringing scooters or bikes."

Site leveling challenges: Some properties have terrain issues. Ronald C. reports about Lake Paradise Resort: "The sites are old and not very level and difficult to maneuver. Lots of seasonal campers but it could be a 4 star campsite with some upgrades."
