    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

    Clear Water Campgrounds

    Love, love, love this campground.

This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. The staff is very willing to help any way they can. The sites are level and spacious.

A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo. Animals from bunnies, peacocks & cats to horses, goats and of course Milton the burro, get it? Milton Burro, LOL

The store has stuff for the kids at very reasonable prices and the ice cream shop across the street is a nice walk after dinner. There's a light there for safe crossing, too.

Try this place, you'll add this to your good memories.

No credit or debit cards. Cash and checks only.

    Clearwater Campground

    Nice!

A fun little campground with a nice bunch of petting zoo type animals! The beach is clean and the lake is warm! Very nice layout with walking trail around the lake. The only complaint was not nearly enough trash cans around (like, none easy to find) and the bathrooms were nasty for our 2 day visit. Price per night for full hook up was $40 :-)

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

    Port Huron KOA

    Commercialized

If you like this type of camping then this theme park camping is for you. It's right in town with sparse trees and very small sites. Make sure to mark the max allowed occupancy to be camping because, if you don't, you will be charged extra cash for your child to spend the day with you while spending money on their amenities. They do have a little amusement park right next door so that can help entertain the young ones for a while and we did appreciate the dog park. It's not a horrible place as we did enjoy ourselves the first visit there. The campsite we had was in the back, between 2 cabins, and that one was actually a decent size. The 2nd trip was a bummer as we were reprimanded for having my girlfriends daughter show up and have breakfast with us. Which, by the way, we bought from the and she shopped in their souvenir store and purchased items. We had to pay another $5 so we could spend that extra money at their campground. Other than that, enjoy.

Guide to Utica

Camping opportunities near Utica, Michigan span across Oakland County's diverse terrain, which ranges from heavily wooded areas to open fields surrounding multiple lakes. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F during peak camping season from May through September. Winter camping is available at select locations where temperatures often drop below freezing, with snow coverage common from December through February.

What to Do

Hiking trail systems: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers extensive trail options ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty. "The extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports. Park offers lots of private sites!" shares Mary H.

Disc golf courses: Addison Oaks County Park maintains a well-maintained course available year-round. "I enjoyed the trails, disc golf and overall wonderful Park staff! Extremely clean and well-kept," notes Joe S. in his review.

Water activities: Multiple lakes provide swimming, fishing and boating options throughout the region. "This was our first time camping. The park has a beautiful 2.5 mile trail around the lake that makes this campground great. We brought our own kayaks but they do rent boats," explains Karen C.

Wildlife observation: Dawn and dusk offer prime viewing times for deer and smaller mammals. "We saw deer and rabbit. Our spot #18 I felt was spacious and not too close to the people next to us and trees behind us," reports a camper at Addison Oaks.

What Campers Like

Privacy between sites: Pontiac Lake State Rec Area receives high marks for site separation. "The sites aren't super far away from each other but there are trees between sites so from most of the sites you can't really see your neighbors," explains Sarah P.

Clean facilities: Modern bathhouses with hot showers are available at multiple campgrounds. "The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean with hot water. Site 71 wasn't the most private but still nice. The spots are all pretty private due to trees and vegetation," notes Sam H. about Pontiac Lake.

Convenient location: Many campgrounds offer a wilderness feel despite being close to suburban amenities. "When I need a weekend get away but don't want to drive too far this here is the spot! The facilities are kept up quite well and the campgrounds are secluded enough," says Jessika A. about Proud Lake Recreation Area.

Site quality: Paved pads and level sites accommodate various camping setups. "Nice quick weekend retreat campground. Cement pads, water, and electric. Loop C is spacious with some trees," reports Ron E. about Addison Oaks.

What You Should Know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from April/May through October, with limited winter availability. "I've stayed at Addison Oaks campground many times over a few decades. It's clean and mostly quiet. A nice relaxing park. The park offers nice holiday activities - we were last there for Halloween camping," explains Barb L.

Bug preparation: Ridgewood Campground and others require insect protection during summer months. "We have been to sites before that must have sprayed for pests because we have never experienced the amount of mosquitoes we did here. Thankfully we had Off Area Camp Spray, our Thermacell, and citronella burning," warns Rodger M.

Poison ivy/oak awareness: Several campgrounds have these plants along trail edges and site perimeters. "Beware of Poison Oak and Ivy! The entire site was bordered with it," cautions a Ridgewood camper.

Reservation requirements: Most locations require advance booking, especially for weekend camping during summer. "The sites are very close together and you can see all of your neighbors. It's what we like to call 'parking lot campgrounds,'" notes Sarah P. about one of the more developed areas.

Tips for Camping with Families

Activity-focused campgrounds: Groveland Oaks County Park specializes in kid-friendly amenities. "This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds," explains Debbie H.

Weekend programming: Several parks offer organized activities during peak season. "We stayed in area A in a water/electric site. It was a Boo Fest weekend. Lots of socially distanced activities for the kids and a scavenger hunt (finding clues on signs in park to solve a mystery)," shares Tim & Nancy C.

Pet exercise areas: Designated areas allow dogs to accompany families throughout most parks. "This is the second time staying in these campgrounds in two weeks. Both times stayed in the more wilderness area D with lots of trees and sites for tents or back-in trailers," notes Richard T. about Oakland County's Addison Oaks.

Playground proximity: Consider site location relative to play areas for convenience. "The campground has a large beach, boat rentals, bike paths plus a BMX area and several playgrounds. Most of the activities (IE beach and rentals) open Memorial Day," reports Carol W.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Holly Recreation Area offers varied site options for different RV needs. "Sites were spacious, we loved the national forest. We stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees. I think site #1 was one of the roomiest and prettiest," advises Jennifer H.

Hookup variations: Electric, water, and sewer options differ between campgrounds and loops. "I love this place and so do my 3 dogs. We got a secluded campsite, and it's gorgeous- tucked into the woods and was easy to back into. There is no water hookup- but you can fill up and dump at the front of the campground," explains Ashley F.

Extension cord requirements: Some sites have electrical connections located far from parking pads. "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad," warns Mary H.

Backup access: Several campgrounds have both paved and gravel surfaces depending on site location. "The roads are paved, however in very bad shape. The bathhouse was modern and in the center of the campground with easy access from all sites," notes Stephanie C.
