Fort Custer Recreation Area offers spacious glamping accommodations set within a wooded landscape near Mattawan. The glamping sites include yurt accommodations, providing a more luxurious alternative to traditional camping with proper beds and climate control features. Electric hookups ensure comfort during any season, while showers and modern bathroom facilities enhance the upscale camping experience. One guest mentioned, "This place is just wonderful! So spacious, it has a beach, beautiful trails of different levels and so much to offer." The recreation area maintains quiet, semi-private settings with substantial natural divides between each glamping location, creating a secluded atmosphere within the wooded environment while still providing essential amenities for a comfortable stay.

The extensive trail system around these glamping sites provides opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through diverse natural settings. "The draw for us is the miles of biking and hiking trails and the two lakes for kayaking," noted a returning visitor. The absence of artificial lighting throughout the recreation area creates exceptional stargazing conditions, with one reviewer highlighting "the lack of lights in the park at night making for a beautiful night sky." Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

Guide to Mattawan

Fort Custer Recreation Area offers diverse tent and cabin camping options within a 3,000-acre forested landscape. Located near Mattawan, Michigan, the area features three lakes connected by trails and sits at approximately 850 feet elevation. The recreation area transitions between forest, prairie, and wetland ecosystems with temperatures averaging 28°F in winter and 71°F in summer.

What to do

Fishing and boating opportunities: At Cranberry Lake Campground, visitors can fish directly from the campground. "Great fishing, amenities available. This is one of the first places I felt gave me a bang for my buck," notes one visitor. The lake also offers swimming and a floating pad for kids.

Mountain biking trails: Serious cyclists enjoy the variety of terrain at Fort Custer Recreation Area. "We camped and rode at Fort Custer. We've been here 2x before and this has now officially become a favorite," shares one reviewer. The campground connects directly to multiple mountain biking trails with varying difficulty levels.

Blueberry picking: The Coloma/St. Joseph KOA offers a unique agricultural experience. "This KOA has blueberry fields everywhere on the property. For a period of time in summer and early fall, you can pick your own blueberries in the morning to have in your breakfast pancakes!" Access to fields is included with your stay during harvest season.

What campers like

Private, wooded sites: Campers appreciate the natural separation at many campgrounds near Mattawan. At Melville 7 Lakes, "nice quiet, large sites" are standard, with access to "several lakes including all sports" activities.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer water access beyond just Lake Michigan. "Lake for boating and fishing. Has a small swimming area, playground," notes a visitor to Melville 7 Lakes. The variety of swimming options means families can choose between lake beaches and designated swimming areas.

Seasonal quietness: Fall and spring camping offers more seclusion. "Michigan State park with large sites and lots of privacy," mentions a camper about Fort Custer, adding that "roads quiet and could easily ride your road bike to nearby bike paths."

What you should know

Weather preparedness: The Mattawan area experiences significant seasonal changes requiring different gear. At Fort Custer, "sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," which means winter camping requires planning for water needs.

Mosquito conditions: Forested areas can have dense insect populations. "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent," warns a camper at Fort Custer. Plan to bring extra bug protection during summer months.

Shower facilities: Kal-Haven Outpost offers "the nicest bathrooms and showers I have ever seen at a campground," but at other locations like Melville 7 Lakes, "don't forget quarters for the shower house!! The lady that runs the shower house was nice enough to give me some but it is a dollar for 9 minutes."

Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling: Many campgrounds offer structured activities for children. The Covert/South Haven KOA has "lots of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store! Lots of sports equipment to loan as well."

Site selection: For glamping near Mattawan, Michigan with kids, location within the campground matters. "We loved our site as it's close to the trails for riding. The campground was almost to capacity, but still some open sites," shares a Fort Custer visitor, emphasizing site placement relative to amenities.

Easy access glamping: If traditional tent camping seems challenging, luxury camping options provide more comfort. "We camped here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily 'outdoorsy' love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable!"

Tips from RVers

Site leveling considerations: At Warren Dunes, "sites are easy to get in and out of with RV/TT," but preparation for different ground conditions helps. The sandy soil throughout many campgrounds near Mattawan can impact leveling.

Water hookups: Know your hookup situation before arrival. At Fort Custer, "sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station," which means planning for water needs and potential lines at dump stations during busy periods.

Seasonal availability: The Hidden Ridge RV Resort operates "Apr 1 - Oct 30," typical of many area campgrounds. Full-service glamping near Mattawan, Michigan may be limited in deep winter months, while some state facilities remain open year-round with reduced services.
