    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Ranger Review: Snapbuds at Muskegon State Park Lake Michigan Campground

    Campground Review

Lake Michigan Campground in Muskegon State Park was a great place to pull in for the night. We had ice cream for supper at the adjacent ice cream shop (where they advertised a free cone with your firewood purchase). We pulled in and settled into our cabin with enough time to enjoy sunset over Lake Michigan from the stairs and overlooks along the beach. The campground is well kept and has a nice shady canopy. The sites are fairly large, but there are no shrubs or structures to provide privacy from neighbors. We reserved a camping cabin and found it clean and functional with power, 4 beds (bunks), mini fridge and microwave. The showers were good sized with plenty of hot water, but being beach style, there was a lot of bug access. Expect to shower with some insects. I was a frustrated birder - I could hear the birds but couldn’t pick them out visually since they were all up so high with no low cover. All in all I would say this is a great campground for beach access, better in the cabins or an RV than in a tent since there isn’t much privacy.

    Ranger Review:

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to review occasionally. On this trip I had a chance to try out Snapbuds, an earbud detangling system. We received the snapbuds before we left Colorado and used the enclosed guide to get them set up on my earbuds - it was a snap! The instructions say they can’t be repositioned once in place, so we were cautious about setting them up right the first time. I don’t use my earbuds often on road trips since I’m the only driver and I like to listen for birds on a walk - but after a few long days in the car with my kids choosing the playlists, this mamma was super excited to whip my earbuds out! I had them shoved in the back of my purse where we’d been rummaging around for various things over the course of the trip, so they had every opportunity to be a tangled mess - but they came out in a neat little wad and unraveled easily to take me away from the teens fighting over beds. I was pleased with how neat they stayed. My one word of caution is that the magnets really like to stick together, and if you create slack while wearing your earbuds (by bending to pick up a perfect rock or acorn, for instance) they have a tendency to find one another and shorten your cord, potentially dislodging your earbud when you straighten back up.

    Ed H. Henning Park

Nice campground, very convenient for river trips.

We stay here at least once a year and do an annual river trip with a bunch friends. It's a nice campground with a small park, pond, full bathrooms, group sites, and even a couple small cabins. It's great for river trips since we go upstream and can float all the way into camp and no worry about driving. We make a run the next morning for coffee and to pick up the vehicles left at the launch.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Campground within walking distance to Lake MI beach

Stayed in Mini Cabin #16 over New Years. Hoped to try Luge at the adventure park but no snow and temps too warm prior to our trip. Cabin sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave and table with chairs. Electricity and heat. Great choice for winter camping. Sites look really close together for summer camping. I did not like the road being so close for road noise. Kids swing set needs updated. Pit ADA toilet very clean. Phenomenal lake overlook and steps to beautiful beach.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort-South Haven, MI

This is my top pick for South Haven

Although this campground has great amenities, a pool, clean showers, and good sites/cabins, it is hard to book. If you know you are going to come to this area and camp, you need to book it a while in advance. I have used a pop-up and there was good space between campers. When I tent camped, we had a great spot near the cafe, the showers are amazing over there, they are more secluded. Our tent spot had electric, water, picnic table and fire ring. We camped on the grass and there is gravel to park your car. This campground is a perfect place to stay when visiting surrounding towns and going to the beach.

Don’t forget to go to Sherman’s!!

There was a forecast or rain, don’t mind the tarp

    East Lake Camping

    Great Hospitality

Nice and cozy little campground in the middle of beautiful rolling farmlands. First time passing through and found it conveniently located within 40 mins of Holland and Saugatuck without needing to get on the highway. The woman at check in was extremely courteous and helpful. We stayed 2 nights over the weekend. Most people here are seasonal, occupying almost all the lakefront sites. We may have seen one lakefront available for renters. Everyone was polite, friendly and quiet after quiet hours. The sites are very small, not much privacy, but well kept. There are more spacious sites available on the upper grassy loop. Well kept grounds throughout with beautiful flowers. The bathrooms were wonderful with great hot water and water pressure. Pretty lake with swimming beach and playground lovely for day use. We would stay again. We stayed with 34’ camper inner lakefront.  I did share a picture of waterfront sites, the one vacant spot is the only site available to rent right now.  The rest are seasonal.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Muskegon State Park - Lake Michigan Campground

This was our second time Camping at Muskegon State Park. The first time we camped at the Channel Campground (not so great), and this time we camped at the Lake Michigan Campground. This campground was easily the better of the two. Tons of tall trees, HUGE campsites with electrical hookups, picnic tables, and fire-rings. I believe you're allowed to have up to 6 people per-site, and you would have no problem fitting everyone. There were clean restrooms and private showers. There are steps that lead straight from the campground to a small beach right on Lake Michigan. Firewood & ice are sold at the campground office, and there's also a small privately owned ice-cream shop at the north end of the campground that sells wood & ice.

There's a boat ramp right down the road at Snug Harbor, and the fishing is great. It's also just a short drive to a canoe/kayak launch on the Muskegon river. The downtown area is about a 20-25 minute drive around the lake, but it has some cool military museums including a WW2 submarine and a transport ship that was used in D-Day. Also, two pretty solid breweries.

Although we were there in the summer, this campground is right across the street from Muskegon's Winter Sports Park. The park has cross-country skiing trails, a permanent luge track, a roller-luge track, and i think an ice skating track through the woods. We're looking forward to taking a winter trip up here to give everything a try!

Guide to Holland

Cabin accommodations in the Holland, Michigan area range from basic to resort-style with varying amenities and pricing. Most Holland cabin rentals sit within 30 minutes of Lake Michigan, offering access to both inland lakes and Great Lakes shorelines. The region features hardwood forests and dune ecosystems, with many cabins situated at campgrounds that provide both privacy and recreational opportunities.

What to do

Lake activities: 10 minutes from shore. Visitors staying at Oak Grove Resort & Campground can easily access Lake Michigan via a short bike ride. "We had a short bike ride to Lake Michigan. There are places to eat along the way and a well sweet little general store. It is next to an 11 mile bike/walking trail," notes a camper.

Dune hiking: Access from multiple locations. The trails near Hoffmaster State Park Campground offer exceptional dune exploration. "Trails to dunes, beach, and other parks as well as dune preserve: all well-marked and vary in difficulty, weaving through pine and hardwood forests nestled among dunes," one visitor explains. The park contains over ten miles of trails across its 1,200 acres.

Coffee and farm experiences: Seasonal options. For those seeking a quieter experience, Art Farm Fennville offers a unique combination of outdoor accommodations and artisan coffee. "Beans are fair trade and roasted on site. Fireflies and Starry Evenings," shares a reviewer who appreciated the on-site coffee experience.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Many cabins near Holland feature recently updated amenities. At Kal-Haven Outpost, visitors appreciate "the nicest bathrooms and showers I have ever seen at a campground." Another camper mentions, "They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store."

Family-friendly atmosphere: Cabins at TriPonds Family Camp Resort receive praise for their accessibility and surroundings. "Nice smaller sized family friendly campground. Enjoyed having activities to do, the jump pillow and pool!" notes one visitor. Another camper shares, "We've been going annually for 7 years. The owners/hosts are wonderful. They keep the place clean and looking beautiful."

Inclusive camping options: For diverse groups, Campit Outdoor Resort Saugatuck provides a welcoming environment. "Campit is one of the few campgrounds that caters to the entire LGBTQ community and those who support it. The amenities feel grounded not over the top…a nice pool, unique 'neighborhoods' to roam and chat up new neighbors and friends," explains one camper.

What you should know

Reservation timelines: The popularity of cabins means planning ahead is essential. A ranger at Hoffmaster State Park advised that "it is best to book months ahead for weekends because they fill up at the beginning of summer; however, cancellations are not uncommon, so watch the DNR site for openings. Weekdays usually have availability, especially the first half of the summer."

Seasonal availability: Many facilities operate on limited schedules. Art Farm Fennville offers year-round cabins but with varying amenities by season. Hidden Ridge RV Resort operates from April 1 to October 30, with peak facilities available during summer months.

Alcohol policies: Rules vary significantly between locations. Oak Grove Resort prohibits alcohol, while most other campgrounds permit it. "This is a family resort and it is drug and alcohol free. It has a beautiful pool and hot tub," explains a visitor about Oak Grove's policy.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Schedule around peak times. Families staying at Hungry Horse Campground benefit from organized programming. "They also typically offer planned activities throughout the week such as wagon rides, meet and greets, and ice cream socials," shares a parent who visited with young children.

Site selection: Consider noise levels. Campgrounds with cabins vary in layout and privacy. "We couldn't fit our trailer into the site we reserved. They were very understanding and found us a pull thru site to use," notes a family who stayed at Hungry Horse Campground with children.

Age-appropriate amenities: Different cabin locations offer varying activities by age group. "We have two young girls and they had plenty to do all week during our stay. Multiple playgrounds, toddler pool and regular pool, jump pad, and lots of room to run around," reports a family who appreciated the facilities.

Tips from RVers

Supply runs: Limited nearby services. When staying at Hidden Ridge RV Resort, campers should stock up before arrival. "There isn't much close to the campground at all. Like the closest gas station is 15 miles. Not really any fast food restaurants either," advises an RVer.

Dump station timing: State parks can have limited facilities with peak usage times. At Hoffmaster State Park, "I did notice the backup of campers at the two campground dump stations Sunday before 1pm checkout," reports one visitor who recommended planning accordingly.

Site features: Many cabin locations also accommodate RVs with varying hookups. "All sites include a concrete pad, fire ring and full hook-up. 120/150 amp," reports a visitor about Hidden Ridge RV Resort, noting the quality of the facilities for larger vehicles.
