    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

Big, clean and plenty to do

The park itself is rather large, and the camping area is pretty expansive as well. Bathrooms are cleanish…but they start getting a little wild as the weekend wears on. Perpetual mud and slop from the showers, but functional. The sites are roomy enough but they are a little close together. Some sites are shaded, some are open…hard to tell when booking. Not many trees to set up a hammock on site. General store was well stocked and the staff across the board were very helpful.

Guide to Hartford

Camping sites near Hartford, Michigan offer diverse options within 20 miles of Lake Michigan's eastern shore. The area features a mix of forest and dune landscapes with elevations ranging from 600 to 750 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F with occasional thunderstorms, while spring and fall camping seasons bring cooler nights that often require extra layers.

What to do

Hiking the dunes: Warren Dunes State Park Campground offers access to massive sand dunes with climbing opportunities. "Huge, beautiful dunes on the beach. Mt. Randall is the high dune to climb but not for the faint of heart! And beware, the sand does get HOT midday," advises one visitor.

Kayak adventures: Black River Trails Campground provides river access for paddling. "A great little campground near South Haven, MI. We wanted to camp, and be close to the local beaches and this was a perfect location to camp at night then drive to South Haven Beach (maybe 10 min drive if that)," notes Phil M.

Cycling the trails: Kal-Haven Outpost positions campers directly on the Kal-Haven Trail. A visitor explains, "A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. They have a dog park and trails on the property with a longer bike trail that runs alongside the campground."

Explore local beaches: Covert Park Beach & Campground provides direct beach access to Lake Michigan. "The short walk to the beautiful beach makes this campground worth it. Bathrooms and showers were well maintained," reports Daniel S.

What campers like

Comfortable yurt options: Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday offers yurt camping near Hartford, Michigan with modern amenities. "We stayed in the deluxe cabin for one night and loved it! The cabin was so cute and well kept. It came with a fridge, stove, and bathroom. We had 6 people in it and we fit comfortably," says Sarah P.

Clean, well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of facilities. At Kal-Haven Outpost, one reviewer notes, "The nicest bathrooms and showers I have ever seen at a campground." Another adds, "Very relaxing. The nicest bathrooms and showers I have ever seen at a campground."

Family-friendly amenities: Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday provides extensive family programming. "Friendly staff, lots of kid activities. Nice pool, clean campground. Barrel train ride is a lot of fun for the whole family," shares Jill P.

Unique features: Some campgrounds offer distinctive experiences. At Bear Cave RV Campground, "There is actually a cave in the campground that you can take a tour of while you are here. There is also a waterfall right next to the cave," notes Jerry S.

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most luxury yurt camping in Hartford, Michigan area is available from April through October. "The grounds were well kept and very clean. Even though it was pretty booked when we were there it didn't feel crowded," noted a visitor to Warren Dunes State Park.

Reservation timing: For premium sites, book well in advance. Eden Springs Park Campground fills quickly. "We are spending the month of August 2018 here and have found the venue quiet, well maintained, friendly and inexpensive ($375 for a month). I do not expect the prices to stay this low now that it has been 'discovered'," warns Bart S.

Alcohol policies: Rules vary significantly between parks. "Gave Warren Dunes a try a few years back. The dunes themselves were cool. If you go, definitely hike up to the top. One setback was that you can't bring alcohol into the park," mentions Dave E.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies widely. At Bear Cave RV Campground, a camper mentions "It's a very nice off the grid camping with no cell service but if you want wifi then its 5.95 per day or if your here for a week + then 34.95 for the month up to 4 devices is your best bet."

Tips for camping with families

Plan for beach transportation: When camping with kids at Warren Dunes, consider logistics. "There is a path to the beach for walking but it is a long walk. We tried walking a wagon to the beach via the road but regretted it. Plan on driving your stuff to the beach or taking bicycles," recommends Heidi S.

Choose sites with playgrounds: Shamrock Park offers family-friendly facilities. "Wonderful spot! Really quiet, super clean and nice facilities! Right on the river and two great playgrounds for kids!!!!" shares Melissa C.

Kid-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with organized children's events. At Coloma/St. Joseph KOA, "Very clean and well-kept park. Lots of fun activities on the weekends for the kids and FREE! They have movie nights, we met Disney characters, did crafts, and enjoyed the barrel train & ice cream sundaes," notes Cassie B.

Bathroom accessibility: With children, convenient facilities matter. At Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday, "Bathrooms/showers are NICE! And it's only 10-15 minutes from the beach in south Haven-beautiful!" reports Melissa B.

Tips from RVers

Level sites matter: Eden Springs Park Campground offers well-designed spaces. "The sites are large, level and spaced far apart from each other. We pulled in with a 42' rig, pulling a 28' hybrid trailer (total 70') and easily pulled into our site without having to unhook."

Hookup placement: Consider the layout of utilities. "All of the hook ups are centrally located between two sites, with each rig having their driver side towards the hookups and their entry sides facing the opposing side," explains a reviewer at Eden Springs.

Pumping services: At Bear Cave RV Campground, "Most of the full hookups are taken 1st by the annuals. Sucks really but they do have an onsite honeypot which will suck out your tanks for $10 each time around."

Concrete pads available: For larger rigs seeking stability, Sunny Brook RV Resort provides "all concrete, gated, beach in a small lake, basketball court, fishing, pools, and lots of grass for the dogs. Laundry rooms and bathrooms spotless."
