    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

    Monroe-Toledo North KOA

    Little overpriced to me

Sites and restrooms were alright, think it is ridiculous to pay extra each night for each pet and children, too many other campgrounds in our area that are more updated and reasonably priced.

    Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA

    Small basic campground near Toledo

Our site was $59.95 a night.

We were in Site# 504. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep. The site was easy to level. We were charged $25 additional for my jeep since we were towing the trailer. We also were charged $10 because we arrived at 1:25 PM and check-in is at 2 PM. The park was close to empty so arriving early was not an inconvenience. We drove ourselves to our spot (no escort).

Our site was shaded with lots of trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The lot comes with a concrete patio with picnic table and fire ring. They sell wood for $6 a bundle.

There is free WiFi, although not strong. They offer Cable TV and there are many channels.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They pickup your garbage at your site daily before noon.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a Swimming pool but it is currently closed due to maintenance (although it just looked closed- no signs of maintenance being done).

There is a Playground. They also offer horseshoes, corn hole, giant jinga.

They have a basic general store. There are not scheduled activities for kids.

There is not a snack bar/restaurant on site.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. This is an RV park with tent camping and cabins to rent.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual bathrooms with your own sink, shower, toilet. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 4 washers and 4 dryers. It is approximately $2.50 to wash and $2.50 to dry a load.

They have a small fenced in dog park.

There isn’t tons to doin the actual city of Perryville. But Toledo is a 20 minute drive.

    Proud Lake Recreation Area

    Clean and plenty of trees

First time out with the camper and we wanted to stay close to home so we found a campground right outside the city. You couldn't tell how close we were because there were so many trees in the area. Looked like up north

While there are plenty of trees around the grounds and lake there are not too many trees between the camp sites so you do totally see your neighbor. Bathrooms were clean at all times. Showers available. I saw basketball and ladder ball. There is a big lake with a boat launch and swimming area. Pets are allowed (leashed) Fire pit and picnic table at camp site. It was a grass site and not paved, some definitely looked more even than others. I did see more activities but we did not check them out. We also didn't go hiking due to the air quality/Canadian fires.

We would go again for a quick get away!

Guide to Grosse Ile

Michigan's southeastern region around Grosse Ile offers year-round camping options with direct access to Lake Erie shorelines. Sites in this area typically feature a mix of wooded and open spaces, with elevations averaging 580-600 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F while spring and fall range between 50-70°F with occasional lake effect weather patterns.

What to do

**Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes and ponds offer varied fishing experiences throughout the campground network. At Wilderness Campground, campers can enjoy "a cute catch and release pond" with convenient access directly from campsites. One reviewer noted, "Great sites with fishing right from our site."

**Water recreation: Access to swimming areas varies significantly by campground. Camp Lord Willing RV Park & Campground provides a "beautiful campground" with paths connecting to fishing areas. The walking trails link to nearby water features for additional recreation options.

**Historical exploration: Sterling State Park offers connections to significant historical sites. The park features "a bike path that will take you all the way to the Historic Rasin River Battlefield and then to downtown Monroe." This provides additional context to the region beyond standard outdoor recreation.

**Island exploration: For those willing to venture slightly further, South Bass Island State Park provides unique island-based camping. According to a visitor, "The campground has beautiful, cliff-side sites right on the water," offering distinctive viewpoints of Lake Erie not available at mainland sites.

What campers like

**Larger campsites: Many campers appreciate the generously sized sites available. At Harbortown RV Resort, visitors enjoy "nice size pool with enough lounge chairs. Sites feel a bit small but still very nice." Another camper mentioned the "Very nice Big Rig Friendly" layout with "all concrete roads and pads."

**Waterfront access: Multiple campgrounds feature direct water views and access. One camper at Haas Lake Park RV Campground mentioned, "Nice lake view across the road. This location has 4 lakes," highlighting the multiple water features available at a single location.

**Family amenities: Parks often include comprehensive family facilities. Harbortown RV Resort offers "go karts, putt putt and arcade. We had a blast!" Another camper noted it's "Kid friendly" with "Mother's day activities were great and were free!" While at Wilderness Campground, "plenty to do from swim, fish, bike the whole park, play at the park, watch movies at night in the community pavilion."

**Clean facilities: Many reviews highlight consistent maintenance standards. Haas Lake receives praise as "a very clean, quite, Beautiful campgrounds. Restrooms were very very clean with full running showers (shower heads were fantastic) and push button sinks."

What you should know

**Seasonal variations impact visits: Timing affects both comfort and available activities. At East Harbor State Park Campground, "The key is site selection...we happened to be in section C which was a newer section of the park. Section C was nice, though in hot sunny days there is very little shade to protect you."

**May fly hatches: Multiple campgrounds experience seasonal insect hatches. A camper reported, "First two nights were perfect but then the may flies hatched (in mid june) and covered everything." Plan timing accordingly to avoid peak insect activity.

**Weather conditions: The lakeside location brings unique weather considerations. One camper mentioned, "I've never been to this park when it wasn't very windy," indicating consistent wind patterns that can affect tent camping and outdoor activities.

**Ferry access requirements: Island campgrounds require additional planning. For South Bass Island State Park, "Access is via ferry. If you chose to leave your car on the mainland (free parking there) & pack in there are multiple sources for golf cart & bike rentals."

Tips for camping with families

**Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. Wilderness Campground includes "a jumping pad for kids, playground and more for kids to do." This provides structured activities for younger campers beyond natural features.

**Swimming areas: Dedicated swimming zones vary by location. Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA features "a swimming area on the lake" with "a trail that goes around the lake." This creates contained recreation options for families with children.

**Designated quiet hours: For families needing consistent rest schedules, campground enforcement varies. A camper noted that Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA has designated quiet hours but "security is so RUDE," indicating inconsistent enforcement that may affect family camping experiences.

**Kid-specific programming: Some campgrounds offer structured activities. Harbortown RV Resort includes seasonal children's events, and according to one visitor, "This campground has everything! Go carts, playground, disc golf, pool, ext... If you have kids it is perfect!"

Tips from RVers

**Site leveling needs: Campground terrain varies considerably. At Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park, "The sites are level but some lack grassy making the patio pretty dusty or muddy." This affects stabilization needs for larger rigs.

**Utility reliability concerns: Regional power stability varies. Some campers experienced outages, with one noting "the power went out on the entire island for almost three hours." Backup power options are advisable for essential equipment.

**Site spacing considerations: Privacy levels differ between campgrounds. Haas Lake Park features sites that are "very spacious with a long driveway," while others report more tightly packed areas where "the spots are pretty close together" requiring careful selection for larger RVs.

**Seasonal closure awareness: Several campgrounds operate limited schedules. One camper arrived at Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park and "discovered this campground was closed for the season." Always verify operating dates when planning pet-friendly camping near Grosse Ile, especially for shoulder seasons.
