What to do
Lighthouse hiking: At Ludington State Park, take the 1.8-mile sandy trail to Big Sable Lighthouse. All the hiking trails are great but be aware that some go through areas open to hunting and we did encounter a couple of deer hunters," notes a visitor to Cedar Campground.
Fishing docks: Matson's Big Manistee River Campground provides river access with boat rentals. "They have a boat launch with rentals for boats, kayaks, and even a little fishing charter type deal if you'd like. Manistee river is very nice to kayak and go fishing," writes one camper.
Trail exploration: Explore miles of trails at state parks and public lands throughout the area. "You can ride bikes, you can kayak, you can walk some trails, float down a river, or go to Lake Michigan. There are also sand dunes and a lighthouse within walking distance of campground," reports a visitor to Ludington State Park.

Tips for camping with families
Beach alternatives: When Lake Michigan beaches are crowded, try inland lakes. "10 minutes from several beaches, I would recommend getting to the beach before 10am. (they get busy fast)," suggests a visitor to Cartier Park Campground.
Playground access: Select cabins near play areas for convenience. "Owner went above and beyond to put us in a site that would work for our RV and kids. we stayed close to the playscape, which ended up being awesome for our kids," reports a Cartier Park camper.
Activity planning: Look for campgrounds with organized children's events. Kibby Creek Campground offers "mini golf, a train ride for kids, a private fishing pond, playgrounds, sand boxes, and various other planned activities."
Kid-friendly fishing: Several locations offer fishing specifically for children. "There is a stocked pond on the property but it is only for kids (17 and under) to fish in," notes a visitor to Poncho's Pond RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling needs: Check if your cabin or RV site requires leveling equipment. At Orchard Beach State Park, visitors noted that "it's a typical state park where some sites are level and some are not and they vary in length."
Distance to amenities: Consider proximity to bathrooms and showers when selecting a cabin. "The bathrooms are modern and clean. There are two sets of bathrooms-one attached to the general store, which has 2 bathroom stalls and one small shower. The other bathroom further into the campground is larger."
Supply availability: Not all locations have on-site stores. "This is a simple campground but remains one of my favorites," writes a Twin Oaks visitor, who appreciates that "they have a freezer for guests to freeze fish and ice packs."
