    Winter cabin and snowshoeing/hiking

This gem of a state park is phenomenal. Camped here in cabins three times over two winters. Cabins with bunks (will sleep 5 total), mini fridge, electricity and heat. Outside pit toilet. Hiking trails are some of the best. Beautiful lighthouse, dunes, beach, inland lake (Hamlin Lake), river and Lake Michigan. Very quiet and snow-covered in winter. Gets very busy in summer. So many activities for all ages. Kayak rentals in summer. Great fishing. Guided snowshoe tours and lamp light snowshoe hikes in winter are awesome. Camp store. Several playgrounds. Beautiful new beach house.

Really nice little campground. Not fancy, but clean and well kept. Pool and petting zoo for the kids. Small store with ice, few necessities and ice cream. Pond in the back on the small river for fishing. Quite a few seasonal campers. Anywhere from rustic to full hook up. Pet friendly. All gravel/dirt/grass sites. Most have trees. Fire pits quite small. Bathrooms very nice and updated.

Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park

    Location is perfect!

Campsite is located 2 miles from downtown Pentwater, adorable small town on the water. Mears state park is 2 miles from the campground as well, Lake Michigan beaches. The playground on the beach is perfect for younger kids. There is a pavilion that serves hot food and ice cream ( hot food ends at 5pm/ ice cream till sunset.) Our kids loved walking in town and heading to the beach.

With that said, there is plenty to do at the campground . Outdoor pool, AJs (putt- putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store, shower house by pool ( very clean), private bonfire pits ( most campsites).

Seasonal’s were very friendly and helpful with local things to do. RV camp, Tent camp, or tent cabin.

Dump station available, firewood for sale, ice for sale, general store has several camping items, 15 minutes away is meijer in ludington. 2 minutes away gas station 2 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches 2 minutes to Pentwater downtown shopping

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

Great fun was had by all

We had a large family camp weekend at Stony Haven. We had 5 sites (21-25) pack to capacity with 32 people.  They owners allowed use to squeeze in a few extra bodies more than their policies specify.

They offer so much at the campground!! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots.  They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers.  Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart.

The tent sites were very nice. Well maintained, each with their own fire ring, a picnic table,  water spickets and electric.  They also have full hookup sites for RVs, rustic sites and mini cabins.

There is a walking path around the back of the campground. It cuts through the woods and past a pond.  My kids (ages 1.5, 3, 5,& 6) spent hours at the pond catching frogs.

The bathrooms were clean and checked several times a day. There were public bathrooms with a few stalls and a shower, but there were also 2 private bathrooms with showers, one of which was handicap/family.  There were 2 additional private shower rooms.  They also have a laundry facility ON SITE!!!!  This came in very handy when I opened up my canvas hammock and found mold.

There is access to Stony Lake across the street and that connects to Lake Michigan.  There was an awesome county beach 5 min down the road on Lake Michigan.  It was right where the big lake meets the outlet for Stony Lake, Benona County Park. When they weren't at the pond my kids were playing in the sand and swimming at the beach.  I love little outlets like this because they are usually shallower and warmer than the big lake and are great for my littles.

They offer a short worship service on Sunday mornings for all that wish to participate.

They owners were so sweet and easy going. We called several times to adjust our reservation right up to the day before and they gracefully tolerated our shuffling and were able to accommodate us. They even allowed us to leave our packed trailer at the site while we spent the afternoon at the beach after checkout.  We came back to the site ate, used the bathroom, hooked up the trailer and took off for home.

    Orchard Beach State Park Campground

Stayed in cabin in this heavy RV park

We were here over July 4 in mini cabin. We had been back country camping before that so were happy to have a cabin for a couple nights. Mini cabin is at tip of park with nice view of lake Michigan sunsets. Cabin had mini fridge, coffee pot, ceiling fan, and I think a heater for winter. 2 sets of sturdy bunk beds. Camp sites were packed with RVs and tents. I don't think I've ever seen a more crowded camp ground. Many campers brought their own bikes, kayaks, boats so there must be lake access nearby but definitely not from this park. Beach inaccessible due to high lake waters. Outhouse was clean and well maintained. Showers a short walk away.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

    Very nice and clean campground

This private campground is the cleanest campground I have ever stayed at.  The bathrooms are cleaned frequently and the grounds are well taken care of.  The campground is only a few years old.  There is a nice pool, ice cream shop and camp store.  There is a nice lake for fishing and kayaking. This is campground is part of a Christian camp near by and is a dry campground.  This is probably the closest campground to the entrance to Silver Lake sand dunes.  There are a lot of planned activities for kids and families.  The driveway through the campground is gravel, but each site has a cement pad for the picnic table area.  Sites are large and grassy. There are also some tent sites available and cabins to rent.

Guide to Free Soil

Cabin camping near Free Soil, Michigan provides access to multiple waterways including Lake Michigan, Hamlin Lake, and the Manistee River. The area experiences warm summers with average highs around 80°F and cold winters that drop to 20°F. Most cabin facilities operate from April through November, closing during the winter months when snowfall can reach 80-100 inches annually.

What to do

Lighthouse hiking: At Ludington State Park, take the 1.8-mile sandy trail to Big Sable Lighthouse. "The hike to Big Sable Lighthouse was beautiful as it wound through the woods and out over the dunes. All the hiking trails are great but be aware that some go through areas open to hunting and we did encounter a couple of deer hunters," notes a visitor to Cedar Campground.

Fishing docks: Matson's Big Manistee River Campground provides river access with boat rentals. "They have a boat launch with rentals for boats, kayaks, and even a little fishing charter type deal if you'd like. Manistee river is very nice to kayak and go fishing," writes one camper.

Trail exploration: Explore miles of trails at state parks and public lands throughout the area. "You can ride bikes, you can kayak, you can walk some trails, float down a river, or go to Lake Michigan. There are also sand dunes and a lighthouse within walking distance of campground," reports a visitor to Ludington State Park.

What campers like

Cabin amenities: Twin Oaks RV Campground and Cabins offers wooded settings with cabin facilities. "We tent camped and loved how our site was surrounded by trees. The owners were wonderful as well," shares a camper who stayed at Twin Oaks.

Pool access: Many cabin locations provide swimming facilities. At Kibby Creek Campground, "They had 2 pools with plans to add a third. Many activities throughout the weekend. They use the campers app which is nice because you get alerts about various activities going on."

Seasonal activities: Multiple campgrounds organize events throughout the camping season. "We stayed during their Halloween weekend. They had all kinds of activities going on including haunted hayrides, trick-or-treating, and site decorating contest," according to a camper at Poncho's Pond RV Park.

What you should know

Beach access changes: Water levels affect beach access at several locations. At Orchard Beach State Park, "Due to high waters the past few years there is no beach. This is still a family favorite and perfect if you want to go into Manistee."

Site privacy varies: Cabin locations have different privacy levels. "Campsites are well maintained. Campsites don't have much privacy, but we were surrounded by family so it worked out fine for us," notes a camper at Kibby Creek Campground.

Reservation timing: Book well in advance for prime locations. "Make sure to book a site near the dunes. This place is perfect and books up quickly," advises a visitor to Ludington State Park.

Seasonal operation: Most cabin rentals operate on limited schedules. Timber Surf Campground runs from April through November, while Twin Oaks operates from "Apr 3 - Nov 29" according to their information.

Tips for camping with families

Beach alternatives: When Lake Michigan beaches are crowded, try inland lakes. "10 minutes from several beaches, I would recommend getting to the beach before 10am. (they get busy fast)," suggests a visitor to Cartier Park Campground.

Playground access: Select cabins near play areas for convenience. "Owner went above and beyond to put us in a site that would work for our RV and kids. we stayed close to the playscape, which ended up being awesome for our kids," reports a Cartier Park camper.

Activity planning: Look for campgrounds with organized children's events. Kibby Creek Campground offers "mini golf, a train ride for kids, a private fishing pond, playgrounds, sand boxes, and various other planned activities."

Kid-friendly fishing: Several locations offer fishing specifically for children. "There is a stocked pond on the property but it is only for kids (17 and under) to fish in," notes a visitor to Poncho's Pond RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling needs: Check if your cabin or RV site requires leveling equipment. At Orchard Beach State Park, visitors noted that "it's a typical state park where some sites are level and some are not and they vary in length."

Distance to amenities: Consider proximity to bathrooms and showers when selecting a cabin. "The bathrooms are modern and clean. There are two sets of bathrooms-one attached to the general store, which has 2 bathroom stalls and one small shower. The other bathroom further into the campground is larger."

Supply availability: Not all locations have on-site stores. "This is a simple campground but remains one of my favorites," writes a Twin Oaks visitor, who appreciates that "they have a freezer for guests to freeze fish and ice packs."
