    Indigo Bluffs RV Park

    Love, Love, Love this campground

My goal is always to find campgrounds that are in state park or national forest settings, but with all the conveniences of a private campground. It’s a bonus if there are lots of things to do in the area. Indigo Bluffs delivers on all fronts. We had a lovely, shaded, level, spacious site which most of them seemed to be.

The campground was large - it’s actually two parts - an RV resort for large fifth wheels and Class As and another campground for everyone else. I really liked the regular campground as it had a lot more shade than the RV resort area.

Indigo Bluffs is close to Empire which has a beach and Joe’s Friendly Tavern. Joe’s has excellent hamburgers and plenty of beer variety. It is also close to a trailhead for the Sleeping Bear Dunes Heritage Bike Trail. The Sleeping Bear Dunes trail is wonderful, a bit hilly, but oh so scenic! It is also close to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park and the infamous Dune Climb. We took a short drive to Sutton’s Bay and rode on the Leelanau Bike Trail to Traverse City. If you do this, be sure to stop at Farm Club on the way back. Excellent brewery and farm-to-table restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and a farm market.

We will definitely return to Indigo Bluffs!

    Sun Retreats Silver Lake

    Beautiful RV resort

This place is very nice and conveniently located to the dunes and all of the local attractions. We decided to rent a cabin this time since our toy hauler was in the shop. The cabins are very clean and up to date with modern appliances. All of their campsites are on a concrete pad and the lawns are groomed perfectly. The pool and hot tub are a great way to relax after spending a day on the dunes.

    Indigo Bluffs RV Park

    Family oriented

This campground has two sides, the campground which accommodates tents, campers and RVs. Also they have small cabins. They offer full hookups as well as 30 & 50 amp service.  Nice shower and bathroom facilities, coin laundry, pool, and camp store. The other side is the “luxury RV Resort” with concrete pads, grass, ponds and lots of greenery. Very upscale.

Awesome facility. Shaded sites that are good size. We have a 23' travel trailer and has plenty of room. Full hook ups including sewer make it very convenient.

    Riverside Park Campground

Nice Little Park on a River

When you first enter the campground you pass by the Pere Marquette River which is a big draw because it is known for great salmon and trout fishing. The park is located in Scottville which is a tiny town but you are only 15 minutes from the Lake Michigan beach town of Ludington. The campground is fairly small (50 sites) but well laid out and will fit any camping unit from tents to large RVs. There are primitive sites and those with electric, water, cable, picnic tables & fire pits. There is a nice, new bathroom that was kept clean. The campground has a very open feel to it with trees on the outskirts. The openness and warm sunshine was appreciated when we were there in late October and experiencing cooler weather. Campsites are on grass and most were in pretty good shape and not too muddy even though we were there at the end of the camping season.

For a little park, this place has a lot of amenities including swimming pools, convenience store (with ice cream treats for $1), playground, basketball, volleyball, horseshoe pits, fishing, paddling, disc golf, shuffle board, laundry rooms, and clean restrooms.  The best part for us was the access to the river for kayaking. There are many nearby rental and livery companies for those that do not have their own watercraft. If you are looking for good hiking trails check out Ludington State Park and the Huron-Manistee National Forest – both of which also have camping. Overall, we really liked this little park. There were just a handful of sites occupied during our stay which made it nice and quiet.

    Rvino - Camp Cadillac, LLC

    Not fancy, but nice

Really nice little campground. Not fancy, but clean and well kept. Pool and petting zoo for the kids. Small store with ice, few necessities and ice cream. Pond in the back on the small river for fishing. Quite a few seasonal campers. Anywhere from rustic to full hook up. Pet friendly. All gravel/dirt/grass sites. Most have trees. Fire pits quite small. Bathrooms very nice and updated.

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

    Peaceful

This campground is peaceful. Nice sites, even a place for rustic camping. Rustic camping you hike up the road, no cars are allowed to sites. Perfect!!! Full hook ups, 3 50 amp sites. Others are 30 amp.
Tent camping has platforms, so your tent is off the ground. Cabins are available for rent.
There is a playground, for the young ones. Rental of bikes, tubing, row boats and canoes are right at the campground. Beach access across street.
The campground is the older type, but the quiet, and professional care you get is awesome!!! This place is a must visit campground. Family feeling here. Vet friendly. Bathroom house is cleaned perfectly every day. Always clean. Day excursions, to see are, sand dunes, ludington, etc. then after the fun, come back to a peaceful evening, beside the fire. Each site has a fire ring.
    Peaceful!!!
Just FYI. No drinking of alcohol is allowed. Perfect for my family, but just FYI.
    Camp peacefully!!!

Platte River Campground — Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

    Camping with kids, Loop 3

This review describes loop 3 only.

This camp is beautiful with old growth trees and plenty of privacy. Electric sites are paved and clean with a nice fire pit and picnic table. Firewood available at the entrance to the loop (we drove - too far to walk while carrying a bundle of wood) for $5/bundle from a vending machine that only takes cash - $1 and $5 bills specifically. Nearby Riverside Canoe Rental also has firewood available, but theirs was $6.50/bundle and not completely dry; we much preferred the vending machine wood.

Reviews we read mentioned that no bicycles are allowed, which we took to mean not allowed on the grounds. This was not the case - plenty of campers were riding bikes; however, there were signs on the hiking trails banning bicycles.

The hiking trail to Lake Michigan was a disappointment for our family. The trail gives way to sand about halfway in, so it’s a pretty difficult hike to a lackluster beach that isn’t well-maintained. There was a lot of litter and other refuse washed on shore. It was very secluded, which was nice. Next time, we’ll drive to a beach instead.

The bathroom and showers were very nice and clean, and there were a lot of little trails through the woods, shortcuts to access the bathroom without having to walk the paved loop. The girls’ bathroom had three stalls and the boys’ had two stalls and two urinals. Two private showers were on the opposite side of the building, along with a nice deep sink for washing dishes. BYO dish soap and rag.

The company was quite pleasant. Quiet hours started at 10:00 p.m., when the camp became noticeably silent.

The one feature this campground lacks is a playground, which will probably deter us from camping here again with our kids.

Also noteworthy is the Riverside Canoe Rental nearby where you can rent tubes, kayaks, and canoes, as well as stock up on fuel, groceries, beer and wine, souvenirs, and anything else you could probably want. They even have a cute ice cream shop.

Sand Lake Campground — Manistee National Forest

    Enjoyable Stay

The campground is rustic with sites 1 - 30 being well spaced with vegetation between most sites and quite spacious.   Sites above 30 are on another loop and are much closer together with less privacy between sites.  There are paved pads for each site although some are sloped.  Also, the orientation of the paving for a lot of site is not correct for a travel trailer, i.e. the door to the trailer is not facing the fire pit and picnic table.  See photo.

Site 30 is close to the restroom and showers (although we didn't use them).  Also, the trash gondolas.

There is little internet access with Verizon service.

You could buy wood and ice from the campground host.

Our neighbor in site 29 had put his generator under the trailer and locked it with a steel cable.   It was visible from the road.   At some point during the day someone cut the cable and stole the generator.

Guide to Free Soil

Campgrounds near Free Soil, Michigan offer both seasonal and year-round RV accommodations between 700-1000 feet elevation in Michigan's northwestern Lower Peninsula. The area combines sandy terrain with hardwood forests, creating varied camping environments ranging from open sunny sites to densely wooded spaces. Most RV campgrounds within 30 miles of Free Soil remain operational from mid-April through October, with limited winter options.

What to do

Kayaking and canoeing: Access the White River at White River RV Park & Campground where visitors can launch from sites two miles upriver. "We brought our kayaks and just brought one vehicle up the river to the start point to put in and got out right at the campground," shares camper Cassondra P. The park features a dedicated canoe landing with tube and kayak rentals available nearby at Happy Mohawk.

Trail exploration: Manton Trails RV Park provides direct ORV access from campsites to surrounding trails. "We went up because it advertised orv access right from campsite. It's really handy to not have to trailer over to the trailheads," notes camper Jen L. The park serves as a convenient base for accessing Michigan's extensive ORV trail system without needing to transport vehicles to separate trailheads.

Fishing options: Hodenpyle Dam lake near Pats RV Park offers quieter fishing opportunities away from the Lake Michigan crowds. "Hodenpyle Dam lake is a great, quiet area. It close enough to several places which makes it convenient to get in some sight seeing in Traverse City, Frankfort and Manistee," explains Steve F. The area features multiple inland lakes within 20 miles of Free Soil for anglers seeking alternatives to busier destinations.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Kampvilla Park maintains exceptionally clean bathrooms and shower facilities. "Extremely clean bathrooms n showers. So much to do right here at the campground," writes Karen B. The park features a family bathhouse in addition to two standard bathhouses, with staff frequently checking and maintaining facilities throughout the day.

Spacious sites: Vacation Station RV Resort provides concrete pads with appropriate spacing between sites. "Cement parking. About 10' of grass between spots. We stayed in an area that had mature trees for shade, but the new area is open," reports Craig F. The park maintains grassy areas between sites and uses nighttime sprinkler systems to keep vegetation healthy despite the sandy soil conditions.

Family activities: Indigo Bluffs RV Park offers organized activities for children beyond standard playground equipment. "The pool is decent and there are organized activities for kids," mentions Stu E. Many campgrounds in the region host weekend events during peak season, with White River RV Park providing basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and walking trails as additional recreational options.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most RV parks near Free Soil close during winter months. Poncho's Pond operates from April 1 to October 31, with similar schedules at other facilities. During shoulder seasons, some parks offer discounted rates. "During our stay we fell into low season and nightly rates were discounted 50%. So for $28/night we got a really nice site with lots of amenities," notes Nancy W.

Variable site spacing: Manton Trails RV Park provides more generously spaced sites compared to some coastal options. "Plenty of pull-through sites and lots of grass," writes Richard. Site spacing varies significantly between parks, with beachside locations typically offering less separation than inland options.

Water access limitations: Public water access points near campgrounds can be restricted. One visitor to Pats RV Park noted difficulty finding places to fill water tanks when traveling between campgrounds: "When we arrived, we discovered that the park was closed. I did a Google search to see if there was any place nearby that we might be able to fill up." Most campgrounds require guests to be registered to use water facilities.

Tips for camping with families

Indoor options for rainy days: Kampvilla offers an indoor pavilion with games for weather contingencies. "The indoor pavilion area is great for rainy days. There are board games and puzzles to do. Plus ping pong and foosball!" explains Amy Y. This feature provides valuable alternatives when Lake Michigan weather turns unpredictable, especially during spring and fall camping seasons.

Swimming alternatives: Sun Retreats Silver Lake provides pool and hot tub facilities for when lake conditions aren't suitable. "The pool and hot tub are a great way to relax after spending a day on the dunes," shares Rich F. These amenities extend swimming opportunities beyond seasonal lake access and provide options when algae blooms affect Lake Michigan beaches.

Playground equipment availability: White River RV Park maintains a sandy playground area with community toys. "They have all the toys to play in sand, basketballs, volleyballs and such sitting out for all the kids to play with," notes Amy Y. Most family-friendly campgrounds near Free Soil provide playground areas, though equipment quality and maintenance vary significantly between facilities.

Tips from RVers

Concrete pad availability: Poncho's Pond RV Park offers upgraded concrete sites for a small fee. "All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site," explains Nancy W. These concrete pads provide more stable parking for larger rigs, especially during rainy periods when sandy sites can become problematic.

Site selection strategies: Poncho's Pond staff allow prospective campers to preview available sites before selecting. "Also loved that they gave us a choice of sites and let us drive around the campground (in their golf cart) and pick out the one we wanted," shares Nancy W. This practice helps RVers find spots appropriate for their specific rig configurations and preferences.

Maintenance assistance: Several rv campgrounds near Free Soil, Michigan provide setup help for inexperienced RVers. "Owners went above and beyond to assist with our set up. Their assistance consisted of offering us an extra hose extension, another part for the sewer connection, and assisted with making sure Everything was working correctly before they left," notes K H. from Kampvilla Park. This support proves particularly valuable for first-time RVers or those with rental units.
