Cabin camping near Woods Hole, Massachusetts offers access to Cape Cod's unique coastal environment where average summer temperatures range from 70-80°F with cool ocean breezes. The area sits at just 10 feet above sea level, creating a flat, accessible terrain for campers. Several campgrounds within a 30-minute drive provide cabin accommodations that serve as convenient bases for exploring the region's beaches, bike trails, and marine attractions.
What to do
Fishing excursions: Bourne Scenic Park provides direct access to the Cape Cod Canal, a prime fishing location. "One of the cleanest campgrounds we have been too. Beautiful location right along the canal that you can bike down to the beach or just to watch some fisherman reel in some massive fish," writes Jaclyn P. in her review of Bourne Scenic Park.
Beach exploration: Sandy Pond Campground offers swimming access just 20 minutes from Woods Hole. "Nice little campground with a good pond for swimming. Nothing super glamorous but there are some nicer private sites. They have a great little store which sells sandwiches," notes Virginia W. about Sandy Pond Campground.
Hiking trails: Shawme Crowell State Forest Campground features woodland trails for nature enthusiasts. "It has two areas. The one nearer the camp entrance is smaller than the second. The second one has a playground while the first one does not. I would not recommend the first area if you have small children for this reason," explains Paula T. in her review of the campground.
What campers like
Ferry access: Martha's Vineyard Family Campground offers convenient transportation to island attractions. "You can take the ferry to Vineyard Haven ($15 round trip) and catch the island bus ($30 for a week pass) that will drop you right in front of the campground," notes Alicia F. about Marthas Vineyard Family Campground.
Water recreation: Peters Pond RV Resort provides multiple swimming options. "Pool was good, pond was great. It was not crowded that time of year, so it was very enjoyable. We really enjoyed the beach raft, able to kayak and did some fishing," writes John D. in his review of Peters Pond RV Resort.
Clean facilities: Bay View Campground maintains high standards of cleanliness. "Bath/Shower house: Spotlessly clean. The cleaning schedule indicates it is cleaned three times daily," reports Lee D. about Bay View Campground.
What you should know
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds near main roads experience traffic noise. "It is located on a busy highway and if you are approaching from the south, the turn into the campground is hair-raising! There is some road noise at some sites but not for most of them," explains Lee D. about Bay View Campground.
Reservation timing: Peak season requires advance planning. "This camp site was busting at the seams. But also, not much to complain about when you're on Martha's Vineyard. Would recommend an air b n b instead. But great option for last minute if available," advises Amy C. about Martha's Vineyard Family Campground.
Site selection: Campground layouts vary significantly. "We had originally reserved Site 98 but there was a large rock and tree roots making it challenging to position our van. We were able to move to Site 95 which was much better. Each site has a picnic table and rock firepit," notes Lee D. from Bay View Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Cape Cod's Maple Park Campground offers organized events. "This is the perfect family campground with lots of activities for the whole family during the on season. Your whole family will be entertained. Be prepared for a busy campground," advises Judy P. about Cape Cod's Maple Park Campground.
Swimming options: Multiple water features enhance family fun. "This campground has EVERYTHING one might want or need. It IS right off an expressway so there's a little traffic noise but the giant sites and quaint stone fire pits make up for that con. If you are a walker, you'll enjoy the hilly accessible paved roads," shares Lisa D. about Cape Cod Campresort.
Playground facilities: Shawme Crowell State Forest Campground recently upgraded its play areas. "If you have young kids, they'll love the new playground area. That's really about the only attraction within the campground, though there are some hiking and biking trails," notes Jean C.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Boston/Cape Cod KOA requires careful site selection. "I have belong to KOA's for quite a few years and I have learned that you really need to upgrade to the better campsites to enjoy your stay. I booked a basic 30 amp fullhook up campsite and it was so tight that unfortunately I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to," advises Janet P. from Boston/Cape Cod KOA.
Seasonal considerations: Off-season stays offer more space. "We stayed here in the off season and enjoyed that very few people were in the park but we got the feel this place could be really busy in the summer," notes Nancy W. about Bourne Scenic Park.
Water drainage: Some campgrounds require special equipment. "No on site drainage for black water (grey takes an adapter). You will need a poop tote. Lots of tight spaces," warns Our Greight Escape about Bourne Scenic Park.
