What to do
Hiking to waterfalls: Multiple campsites provide access to local waterfalls including Tannery Falls, a 20-minute drive from Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground. "Went to Tannery Falls, beautiful waterfall. About a 20 minute drive away, worth a visit," notes Lauren from Savoy Mountain State Forest Campground.
Bird watching opportunities: Schodack Island State Park provides excellent bird observation platforms with blinds. "Best part was hiking out to a couple of different blinds to look for birds. Did see a juv eagle," writes Patsy E., who visited Schodack Island State Park Campground.
Fishing in local waters: Multiple ponds and lakes offer fishing opportunities within walking distance of campsites. "The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night, and wildflowers were in bloom," mentions Ann B. about Woodland Hills campground, noting the peaceful ambiance for evening fishing.
Explore Mass MOCA: The renowned contemporary art museum is just minutes from Historic Valley Campground. "I've stayed here for Wilco solid sound festival since 2013 and for fresh grass 2019. The campground has a cool lake front, and you're about a five minute drive to mass MOCA or a 20-30 minute walk," explains Eric P.
What campers like
Bear safety systems: Many campgrounds provide secure storage for food and pet supplies. "Sites are large and generally secluded, each offering a bear box set apart from the campsite itself as black bears live in the park," notes Jean C. about Mount Greylock State Reservation.
Secluded tent sites: Campers appreciate the well-designed sites that create privacy. "Sites 1-9 are located near Berry Pond and are serviced by a pit toilet. The rest are about 1.5 miles south on the loop road," describes Lee D. about Pittsfield State Forest Campground, highlighting the spatial distribution that creates privacy.
Natural water features: Lakes and ponds offer additional recreation opportunities. "Nice small campground in North Adams Ma. Very helpful friendly staff. Camping here gives you a small lake and plenty of woodland surrounding you and since of peace," explains Stephen R. about Historic Valley Campground.
Well-maintained shower facilities: Campers frequently mention clean bathrooms as a highlight. "Bath house was great. Four private shower rooms (2 for men, 2 for women). They also had outdoor showers and a dish washing station," shares Lourdes about Pittsfield State Forest Campground.
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Most campgrounds have minimal connectivity. "Don't expect any cell service or internet, but the site is close enough to town if you need," advises Yoni N. about Cherry Plain State Park Campground.
Rabies documentation requirements: Some campgrounds require official documentation for pets. "Be sure to bring your dogs rabies records!! They don't let you in with just the tag, it has to be the paper records," warns Kara W. about Schodack Island State Park.
Wildlife precautions: Black bears are common in the Hancock area. "Use the bear boxes seriously. There are bears around," emphasizes Christina W., who camps regularly at Mount Greylock State Reservation.
Seasonal road closures: Winter access is limited at many campgrounds. "During the winter you can access it via snowmobile or skis," notes Jean C. about the Sperry Road campground, indicating the road is not maintained for regular vehicles during winter months.
Tips for camping with families
Campground playgrounds: Some campgrounds have dedicated play areas for children. "Fabulous stay! The site was SO spacious and felt secluded because of all the nature and greenery. Wonderful hikes and beautiful walks. The pavilions were huge!" shares Brittany V. about her stay at Spacious Skies Woodland Hills.
Group camping options: Several campgrounds offer specialized group sites ideal for families traveling together. "We reserved a groupsite down by a stream and pond. It had a large common area surrounded by little pockets which made great tent sites. Beautiful site! Other campsites were far enough away that we felt like we had the place to ourselves," explains Alicia S. about her experience at Pittsfield State Forest.
Beach and swimming areas: Many campgrounds include water features for children. "Clean and very friendly camp spot. The sites were clean and quiet. The beach is clean. My site was amazing," shares Joey M. about Cherry Plain State Park.
Educational wildlife encounters: Children can learn about local ecology. "Many 'exotic' birds (for a Brooklyn boy, anything that is not a pigeon or sparrow is exotic). We had frequent visits from Gray Catbirds, and I saw a glimpse of a Bald Eagle through the treeline," reports Joseph C. from Schodack Island State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring preparation. "Second time we stayed there for overnight while traveling. Well kept. Adequate space. Friendly hosts. Terrain is uneven. Hit and miss on how flat or leave sights are," advises Ray P. about Bonnie Brae Cabins and Campsites.
Hookup configurations: Pay attention to the layout of utilities at your site. "We stayed in site #36. It had plenty of room for our 4 person tent, kitchen tent and car. The sites were close to each other but enough vegetation around to have a little privacy," shares Lourdes about Pittsfield State Forest.
Access roads: Some campgrounds have challenging approaches. "I could have used leveling blocks because it was hard to find a great spot that was level side to side. Sites 27 & 29 each seemed a little more level and 29 was larger," suggests Jean C. about Bonnie Brae Campground, providing specific site recommendations for easier setup.
