    Martin Stream Campground

    Three days in a cabin

We rented a one room cabin that was perfect for two who flew in without camping gear. Fridge, coffee pot, microwave and AC. One queen bed and a bunk bed made for comfortable sleeping and a fire pit was even included. This site is located on a beautiful property and very quiet. There is also a pool and we’ll stocked store and the Zach and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating and that’s why I gave it five stares. We will stay again if in the area and I recommend you give this place a try. Trailer or tent sites are here as well as a ‘glamming’ canvas tent for a more romantic stay. 😉

    Martin Stream Campground

    Second stay

We tented for two nights mid-week in 2020 and booked the cabin for Memorial Day weekend 2021. I thought we might like it less completely booked but that wasn't the case. The owners are quality people, the seasonal folks are super nice, the facilities are lovely. The weather was cold and rainy but there was still a great vibe and tons of activities. The cabin was cozy but had a microwave, coffee pot, and fridge (no need to worry about ice). Outside we had a canopy, fire ring and grill. The kids had a blast in the heated pool and on the playground.

    Webb's Campground

    Small waterfront campground

The majority of campsites are right on the Dead River in a beautiful region in Maine called The Forks. This area is an outdoor paradise with tons of things to do kayaking, white water rafting, hunting, fishing, hiking, and nature viewing. Riverdrivers has a myriad of overnight accommodations including primitive tenting, RV with electric and water (some just 20A and water and the others 20A/30A and water), cabins with electricity and screened in porch, motel rooms, and a rental home open year-round that sleeps 14.

There is a dump station onsite for RVs. There are picnic tables and fire pits at the camping sites and cabins. Wood is available for purchase at the good price of$10 for a wheelbarrow load. Sites are mostly grass and the road is smooth gravel devoid of any potholes. There are some trees for shade but not many and there is not much privacy between campsites. Obviously, the best sites are right on the water but the majority of those are without hookups. Check out their Facebook page because they offer camping discounts in the past if you mention the add. There are restrooms and showers with 14-hour access and a few port-a-potties scattered about. There is also a dishwashing station. Bathroom facilities were very clean as was the dishwashing station. Horseshoe pits are present but that is pretty much it for amenities, other than the great water view. No online reservation you must call or email them.

The biggest complaint is the loud road noise from big logging trucks. The campground is located directly off Route 201 in West Forks which makes for easy access into the park (but you get the road noise). Across the street is Berry’s General Store with just about everything you need and is a fun old store to roam around. Just up the road is Hawks Nest Lodge which has a great restaurant with full bar. Their outside seating is great for soaking up the sun and watching the rafters on the river. Head over to Moxie Falls for a short hike into one of Maine’s famous falls.

    Tops’l Farm

    Wow...Awesome Experience

This place is like the Ritz Carlton of campgrounds! The owners took a farm and converted into an upscale camping experience. They have thought of everything!

You can choose to stay in a tent or a cabin. The tents are outfitted with two beds and a nice outdoor seating area. Candles and solar lights will keep it illuminated at night. They include special touches such as branded matches and a carafe full of water on the bedside table. Each site has its own firepit and porch.

The common spaces are equally as luxurious. The bathhouse was just like a four-star hotel. They provide you with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There is even a hair dryer! Bug spray and lotion are also available for your use.

There is a common space that includes picnic tables and a large fire pit. The bathhouse building also has charging stations for each tent so you can stay plugged in during your stay!

Only downfall…There are quite a few of mosquitos. Thankfully they provide various bug spray's that you can use!

Their is a boat launch a mile or less down the road. And the campground over all is a great place for both old and young to enjoy. I highly recommend this place. Although becoming a new seasonal is hard and you are put on a waiting list. The campground offers so many fun activities that are well worth the time their. Their is also a wagon ride offered on the weekend throughout the day.

    Tops’l Farm

High end glamping at its best

Tops’l Farm offer the best of glamping.  Located in Waldoboro, they create a wonderfully balanced experience between the outdoors and glamp.  While their model continues to evolve, camping is not available on all days/weekends.  They create special weekend camping events and retreats.   We participated in a weekend camping event that included a farm to table meal on Saturday evening in their barn.  They had recommendations for places to visit during the rest of the weekend, which we did not do.

Their model is a stay that costs a price, plus a lot of a la carte “extras” that you can order.  We ordered Friday dinner and wine;  and breakfast for one morning.  Depending on the weekend, ‘extra’ offers could also include yoga, foraging, s’mores kits, etc.

Tops’l Farm has both cabins and glamping tents.  The bath house is very nice for a camp bath house, with soap and shampoo.    The cabins are full of creature comforts, including nice sheets and blankets, lanterns, and an overall beautifully appointed space that is still rustic.  Each cabin has a fire pit.

The farm dinners offer delicious food with ingredients from local farms.  The food is delicious, simple and very satisfying all at the same time.  The barn that they hold the dinners in is simple yet elegant.  There is a camp store where you can buy beer, wine, snacks and other basic items.

They truly curate a lovely glamping experience.  It isn’t cheap, but if you want a glamping weekend, it’s one of the best.

    Spacious Skies Balsam Woods

    Quiet, Spacious, Lots of Amenities

While we don’t usually stay in private campgrounds due to their high cost, the price was reasonable for the quality of this campground and amenities provided. We were in need of a shower and a place for the night and this campground was perfectly situated off the highway to Greenville.

Most of the sites are designed for larger RVs with full hook-ups, but they have just a handful of simple tent/small camper sites without services, which is exactly what we needed.   Just a picnic table and fire ring and some privacy and we were happy campers.

The shower house was newly remodeled and very clean, as was the laundry facility with dishwashing/utility sink. The campground has access to over 1000 miles of trails, which are designed for ATV’s. They even have an ATV washing station. While it was not open in late September, the campground offers a nice pool, game room for the kids of all ages, a small camp store, and even has a snack bar and ice cream counter.  And, if you are seeking some amazing hiking, it's relatively close to Borestone Mountain and sections of the Appalachian Trail.

The young husband and wife team who own/run the place are very sweet folks who seem to really pay attention to the needs of their customers.  For instance, they recently spent a good deal of money on high speed wifi because that is what their customers said they wanted.  We didn't need it, so can't comment on its quality, but it's there if you do.

    Pushaw Lake Campground

    Quick Trip

I’ll preface this by saying that we got in after dark and left by 10am so this review is limited. First, while being very nice the front desk worker was not very helpful in helping us understand the layout and our best choice for tent camping that night. She was just not very communicative. After some prodding questions that felt like I was pulling teeth, we chose site 1 which was by the beach and the only tent site in that area of the campground. It was mid Sept on a particularly windy and unseasonably cold night. The wind was coming right off the lake which made it particularly hard to set up. Blocking the wind with our car was our only choice. After we got settled in, a nice fire and a little bourbon made it all worthwhile. While not very private because we were right next to an RV (all the RVs were lined up on the waterfront with little space between), it was still quite a lakefront spot. The site included a picnic table, a fire ring and a charcoal grill. Buckets of well seasoned wood were available at the camp store right next to us. It had a nice porch to sit on for the morning sun but unfortunately, that looked the opposite way from the lake toward the dense central campground. The camp store had a nice indoor dining area with views toward the lake that I believe was also closed for the season. All in all, I would recommend this if you’re not very concerned with privacy and want a beautiful lake to camp by.

What to do

Water activities on two rivers: Two Rivers Campground sits at the confluence of the Kennebec and Wesserunsett Rivers, offering multiple water recreation options. "A small campground with big personality. Clean, quiet and great neighbors," notes one visitor. The campground provides free canoe and kayak usage with 2-hour reservation slots, including paddles and life jackets.

Disc golf course access: Beaver Brook Campground features an on-site disc golf course alongside other recreational facilities. "Very nice campground with a good camp store and disc golf course. We will stay again!" reports one camper. The course is available to both overnight guests and day visitors for a small fee.

Hiking nearby trails: Cabin accommodations at Happy Horseshoe Campground provide access to numerous hiking opportunities. "About 12 miles south of a point on the AT so plenty of hiking nearby as well," notes one reviewer. Trail difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging routes along the Appalachian Trail section.

What campers like

Private cabin options: Families appreciate the range of cabin accommodations at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park. According to a visitor, "Been here 3-4 times and have had an amazing time watch the kids. Great little fishing ponds, cabins and a Treehouse!" Cabin rentals range from basic units to specialty accommodations with varying amenities.

Clean facilities: Sebasticook Lake Campground maintains high cleanliness standards throughout their property. One visitor reported, "This campground is small family owned. The owners are outgoing and nice. The store offers handmade craft items with awesome prices and a small selection of take out foods."

Themed events: Seasonal cabins at Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp-Resort feature regular themed activities. "Every week is themed. My family goes every year for magic pumpkin week which includes TRICK OR TREATING IN SEPTEMBER. My nieces and nephews love it!" states one enthusiastic reviewer.

What you should know

Site features vary significantly: Cabin accommodations near Hinckley differ widely in amenities and layout. At Searsport Shores Ocean Campground, "Some tent sites have ocean views. The tents sites aren't accessible by car though, so you need to put all your camping equipment into a wagon and pull it to your site."

Seasonal operations: Most cabin rentals operate on a limited seasonal schedule. The Evergreens Campground and Restaurant typically closes for winter months, while Two Rivers Campground operates from May 15 to October 15. Bring appropriate clothing for temperature variations, as overnight lows can drop below 50°F even in summer.

Reservation requirements: Almost all cabin accommodations require advance booking. More to Life Campground implements a selection process: "When we arrived, we were given a map with available sites marked and free reign to pick the spot of our liking," notes a visitor. Off-season rates average $40-60 for basic cabins.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Camping with children works well at facilities with structured activities. One visitor to Beaver Brook Campground stated, "Great campground for kids including playground, pool, water slides, canoeing, kayaking, mini golf and disc golf. Definitely a place to stay for a few days."

Multi-generational activities: Choose cabins with diverse recreation options. "For parents; live entertainment with local bands on Saturday nights, an adult only swim nightly...candy bar bingo (where you can play bingo WITH your kids and was quite fun)," reports a visitor to Beaver Brook.

Privacy considerations: Many cabin locations feature close proximity to other sites. "Sites are all big with plenty of room between the sites for the perfect amount of privacy," notes one family visiting Beaver Brook Campground, though experiences vary by specific campground.

Tips from RVers

Site selection priority: When choosing cabin accommodations, consider location within the grounds. At Two Rivers Campground, "The RV sites that are interesting are the ones directly along the Kennebec. They are sites 39-45; 47A; 47B; 47C; 48; and, they park parallel to the river. Otherwise, it's a very tight center filled with RV's and very large motor homes."

Road conditions: Access roads to cabins near Hinckley vary in quality. One visitor to The Evergreens Campground noted, "The down side is the truck traffic on the nearby roads. The campground is near an intersection so logging trucks slow and accelerate nearby starting early in the morning."

Leveling challenges: Some cabin and RV sites require equipment adjustments. One visitor to Two Rivers Campground explained, "We had a long pull-thru site that was located under pine trees which provided welcomed shade since the temperatures were in the high 80's. The first site we were assigned was in the direct sun so we asked to move to a shady site and they were very accommodating."
