Stillwater's unique location between the Penobscot River and Pushaw Lake provides diverse camping options within Maine's Central Highlands region. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 100-150 feet above sea level, creating moderate temperature variations between day and night even during summer months. Winter camping options remain limited with most facilities closing from mid-October through early May.
What to do
Snowmobile trail access: Pumpkin Patch RV Resort provides direct connections to local trails. "Snowmobile trails behind the campground lead to a walking path that connects the high school and elementary school for a pleasant walk in the woods," notes Rebecca Y.
Lakefront recreation: At Pushaw Lake Campground, swimming and boating dominate summer activities. One camper reports, "We sat our chairs in the water and cooled down everyday and floated on our noodles. Great relaxing place."
Bar Harbor excursions: Plan day trips to coastal attractions from local campgrounds. A visitor at Branch Lake Camping Area noted, "The town of Ellsworth has everything you need. Walmart, home depot, the Global beverage store, laundry places, and best of all Martha's Diner."
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many waterfront sites offer chances to spot native birds. A camper at Branch Lake observed, "We had loons come in close to our site. Saw an Eagle too."
What campers like
Spacious sites: Parks Pond Campground provides room for equipment setup. "We borrowed a friends motor home and pulled in here and immediately wanted to stay an extra day. Nice long term campers, incredibly clean bath house and the owners were so wonderful," explains James L.
Maintenance standards: Paul Bunyan Campground receives consistent praise for upkeep. Vern N. appreciates the "Easy sites to get into. Close to the cross center and the waterfront concerts. Quite."
Adult-oriented atmosphere: Certain properties cater to older travelers. One visitor observed about Pumpkin Patch, "This campground caters more to adults and does not have too much for kids to do. Most of the campers were seasonals whose campsites were well-kept and they were quiet."
Seasonal community: Branch Lake develops a strong community throughout summer. "There are some seasonal sites some are set up so nice," remarks a regular visitor who appreciated the "group bonfire pit every evening many of the people gather there."
What you should know
Limited entertainment options: Some properties focus on basics rather than activities. A camper at Pumpkin Patch mentioned, "The park is nice and clean with just a few amenities but just an average campground."
Maintenance priorities: Expect regular groundskeeping. "Sites are very clean and the park is well-groomed with maintenance people always mowing or cleaning sites," reports a visitor.
Connectivity varies: Internet access depends on location and time of day. "Our Verizon phone got good reception and our hot spot worked well. The campground wi-fi was decent at our site but that depends on where you are in the park and what time of day you are using it."
Distance considerations: Many Cold River Campground visitors use it as a base for Acadia visits, though the drive takes 45-60 minutes each way. "Location was a good 45 min drive from Acadia National Park, longer than we anticipated. Drive got old after a couple days."
Tips for camping with families
First-timer friendly spots: Branch Lake welcomes novice campers. "It was a little intimidating being our first time camping but we checked in and rolled down to our site right on the water. Everyone there was extremely nice and friendly."
Beach access priorities: Bangor Holden KOA offers organized activities for children. One family reports, "We booked a deluxe patio site. The site was great, flat and easy to back into. The campground was clean and other campers were very friendly and very family oriented. Lots of organized activities and great Bingo on Saturday night."
Pet-friendly amenities: Dog friendly campgrounds near Stillwater include those with dedicated exercise areas. A visitor to Pumpkin Patch appreciated "a new dog exercise area which has water and toys and is long enough for our Labrador retriever to chase a ball."
Youth activities: KOA properties typically organize scheduled recreation. "As with any KOA they have lots of activities throughout the day for families, and a pool, but she loves the ice pop contest. if you find a painted rock and bring it to the office you get a free ice pop."
Tips from RVers
Site positioning: At Branch Lake, approach affects your views. "If you have a small camper you can pull in forward and your door opens to the water. I couldn't pull in I had to back in yet having the dinette overlooking the lake was nice."
Hookup availability: Most Stillwater area campgrounds offer full-service connections. "Our site was a full hook-up pull thru which was perfect for our one-night stay. All the hook-ups were well-placed and we did not need extensions to connect."
Local repair services: Emergency RV repair options exist nearby. A Branch Lake camper recommended: "We found a great mobile Repairman that fixed our slide out while we were there. It broke the 2nd week of June and we couldn't find anyone to fix it."
Discount availability: Several properties honor membership programs. Pumpkin Patch "offers discounts for Good Sam/FMCA/military/Passport America and have better rates for weekly/monthly/seasonal stays."
