What to do
Canoeing access: Free use at Two Rivers Campground provides complimentary canoe rentals with reservation of a two-hour time slot. "We took a canoe up the river for a couple hours. Kind people," shares one visitor at Two Rivers Campground. Paddles and life jackets are provided with canoe rental.
Disc golf courses: 18 holes are available at Jellystone Park™ Androscoggin Lake along with mini-golf facilities. "Amazing campground. Has a lot of stuff for kids including playground, pool, water slides, canoeing, kayaking, mini golf and disc golf," notes a camper.
Ocean view relaxing: Sunrise watching at Megunticook Campground offers coastal views from designated seating areas. "There is a cute wooden swing that was perfect to enjoy the atmosphere of birds and nature welcome you to this beautiful location," reports a visitor. The overlook sits directly adjacent to the sea with benches and chairs.
What campers like
Affordability factors: Site selection flexibility at More to Life Campground allows campers to choose their preferred location. "When we arrived, we were given a map with available sites marked and free reign to pick the spot of our liking," explains a guest. The campground charges $40 for a tent site with electrical hookups and water.
Entertainment options: Weekly activities at Jellystone Park™ Androscoggin Lake include adult-only swim periods every night. "For parents: live entertainment with local bands on Saturday nights, an adult only swim nightly. Playground is close enough to the pool to actually enjoy this while listening to my kids play," notes one parent.
Waterfront accommodations: Site 51 at Two Rivers Campground provides tent camping directly on the Kennebec River. "I used site #51 and pitched my tent about 20ft from the Kennebec. At 6:45am I saw two bald eagles patrolling the Kennebec," shares a camper. Sites 50-51 are located on a small point at the confluence of the Kennebec and Wesserunsett Rivers.
What you should know
Site location considerations: Road noise can affect certain campsites at Megunticook Campground. "The sites here are nicely wooded and have a decent amount of separation between most of them BUT the campground is located too close to the road and, with the exception of sites 84-87 and cabins 8-10, you will hear road noise in your site," warns one visitor.
Additional fees awareness: Many campgrounds charge for extras beyond the base cabin or site rate. "I thought $50 for a tent site was a little steep but it was all the potential extra fees that irked me: $30 site lock to ensure you get the site you want when you reserve, $4 weather guarantee, $7.95 if you need to hook up to WiFi, $10 to use the dump station," reports a Megunticook Campground camper.
Bathroom distance considerations: Tent sites may be far from facilities at some campgrounds. "There are a handful of tent sites at the far end of the campground set off on their own and right along the river. The only downside is that they are pretty far away from the bathrooms," notes a visitor to Two Rivers Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Schedule flexibility helps families make the most of campground amenities. "Beaver Brook in Monmouth Maine is a must stay if you have kids from babies to teens. We meet up with a couple Moms and their children who we don't get to see too often and make it a 'girls and kids' trip and have a blast making memories," shares a visitor at Jellystone Park™ Androscoggin Lake.
Space considerations: Site selection matters for group camping with children. "Sites are all big with plenty of room between the sites for the perfect amount of privacy. This year we opted for a small group site with a centrally located fire pit and spent our days in the lake, pool, or just hanging out while our kids rode their bikes," notes a parent at Jellystone Park™ Androscoggin Lake.
Children's activities: Theme week programs at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park provide structured entertainment. "A family campground with pool, playground, bounce house, Yogi Bear, theme weeks, store, rv sites and cabins. It's fun but not private (secluded), tranquil, or very wooded," explains a camper. Most activities are scheduled on weekends.
Tips from RVers
Oceanside stays: Parallel parking RV sites at Two Rivers Campground offer direct water views. "Some of the RV sites are located parallel to the river so your patio is open to the river and you have an unobstructed water view. However, these sites are fairly short and would not accommodate larger RVs," notes a visitor. Sites 39-45, 47A-C, and 48 offer these river views.
Seasonal cabins: Renovation updates at Sennebec Lake Campground include new glamping options. "Campground is under new ownership as of 2022 a lot of new improvements and more coming new glamping village the lodge house is being renovated new bathrooms and more coming," reports a regular visitor. The site offers a mix of cabins and glamping tents near the beach area.
Utility hookup planning: Full-hookup options vary by campground and site. "We could have chosen lakefront but they were just water and electric and since we were staying 4 days we chose the full hookup in a nicely wooded site," explains a visitor to Duck Puddle Campground about their site selection strategy.
