Indian Creek Recreation Area serves as the primary camping hub near Woodworth, Louisiana, with over 100 developed sites around a 2,500-acre lake. The recreation area sits within the Evangeline District of Kisatchie National Forest at approximately 120 feet elevation. What to do
Fishing opportunities: Valentine Lake Northshore Campground offers excellent fishing in a 46-acre lake where motorized boats aren't permitted. "We found massive wasps nests and turtle shells on the forest floor, saw a gator while canoeing, and even saw an eagle! (My first one 😁)," notes Van N.
Trail exploration: Valentine Lake Wild Azalea Trail provides hiking options with primitive camping available. "I hiked about 7.5 miles in from the Valentine Lake trailhead to a large clearing by the bridge with a nice cool stream. There are other clearings nearby which would be great for a small group camp," shares Sean S.
Biking access: The Loran Site Complex connects to multiuse trails perfect for mountain biking. "This site is PERFECT for hiking or biking the multiuse trails. Inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Evangeline District. Well defined, marked sites with firepit, picnic table, lantern ring, but NO WATER," advises Paula W.
What campers like
Quiet primitive areas: The primitive camping section at Indian Creek Recreation Area Best Camping Spot provides secluded camping options. "The cleanliness of the primitive camp sites is unsurpassed. Beautiful views of the lake can be seen from almost all primitive sites," reports Kayla H.
Scenic waterfront sites: Valentine Lake Northshore Campground offers lakefront camping with basic amenities. "Inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Evangeline District lies this peaceful little oasis. Water, flush toilets, seclusion, lake, and fishing. This was an amazing spot to stay for a few nights," shares Paula W.
Forested campsites: Loran Site Complex provides camping within a pine forest. "Sites have decent buffer between them. Nestled amongst the pine trees, you really feel like you're in the forest. Bathrooms very clean," notes Fabein D.
What you should know
Campground conditions: South Campground — Chicot State Park has well-maintained facilities but can be crowded. "Overall it is one of the best state parks in Louisiana. Miles of trails for hiking & biking. Even a paddle trail out on the lake. Two campgrounds with bathroom/shower bldgs. Also has scenic primitive campsites that you can hike to and/or paddle to," says Mike V.
Weather considerations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, requiring extra water supplies. "Super quiet (minus gunshots during hunting season). First come first serve. Says it's $10/night but we couldn't find a drop box," explains Taylor C.
Wildlife awareness: Alligators inhabit many water bodies in the area. "Watch for the alligators if you're near the water! They are not shy and I do not recommend feeding them unless you want them coming to visit you," cautions Taylor C.
Tips for camping with families
Beach access: Indian Creek Recreation Area has designated swimming areas ideal for children. "I would like to start by saying this is a campground that is designed for young families, from the multiple sandy beach areas to the playgrounds, there was lot for my elementary age children to do," explains Sarah L.
Playground facilities: Multiple play areas are available for children at Indian Creek. "South landing... Camped here frequently as a child. Now enjoying it as an adult. Large state park and always have a site available, even with short notice. Lots of things to do," shares Charles P.
Weekend considerations: Weekends bring larger crowds and more noise. "We went during the week, so it was quiet. So pretty. No sewer hookup, but has 2 dump stations. We were able to launch our kayaks from our RV site," notes Cat R.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: When bringing RVs to Indian Creek, some sites accommodate larger vehicles better than others. "We have a 21' travel trailer and barely fit it and our Toyota Tundra in site 52. The lake was visible when standing inside the camper (driver side) but not from our chairs by the fire," details Layla D.
Full hookup limitations: Most sites offer only water and electric connections. "Electric & water at sites, but no sewer. Full hook up sites are being built. Senior discount got 10% off. Only stayed one night for about $26.00," explains Gary P.
Leveling requirements: Some sites require leveling equipment. "We stayed in site 109, which is a full hook up site. Slightly unlevel, needed blocks on the right side," advises Cat R.
