Best Campgrounds near Fairbanks, LA

The Fairbanks, Louisiana area encompasses a diverse range of camping options across public lands and private facilities. Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area offers primitive dispersed camping opportunities with no hookups or facilities, while several established campgrounds like Ouachita RV Park and Landry Vineyards provide full hookup sites for both tent and RV camping. State parks in the vicinity, including Poverty Point Reservoir State Park and Chemin-A-Haut State Park, feature more developed campgrounds with amenities such as showers, restrooms, and picnic areas. Many locations provide a mix of tent sites, RV spots with hookups, and cabin rentals, catering to various camping preferences within driving distance of Fairbanks.

Road conditions throughout the region are generally good, with most established campgrounds accessible via paved roads. Weather considerations are important when planning a trip, as Louisiana's humid subtropical climate brings hot summers with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and mild winters. Most developed campgrounds remain open year-round, though primitive sites in wildlife management areas may have seasonal restrictions or become difficult to access during heavy rainfall periods. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during weekends and holidays. Cell service varies significantly, with better coverage near larger towns and spotty reception in more remote areas. "This is a hidden gem north of Bastrop, Louisiana. Have camped here on multiple occasions. Every time there have been very few campers so it's almost like having the entire campgrounds to yourself," noted one visitor about Chemin-A-Haut State Park.

Several visitors mentioned lakefront access as a key highlight at locations like Lake D'Arbonne State Park, which features lakeside premium sites with water views. Reviews consistently note the well-maintained facilities at most established campgrounds, with clean bathhouses and level camping pads. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound throughout the region, with many campers reporting sightings of local fauna. While some primitive sites offer seclusion and natural surroundings, the developed campgrounds provide amenities that make longer stays comfortable. As described in feedback on The Dyrt, "Lots of amenities. Tennis courses, disc golf course, hiking/biking trails, swimming pool, cabins, lodges, several playgrounds, picnic areas, pavilions & WiFi." Proximity to fishing spots is frequently mentioned as a benefit, with several campgrounds offering direct access to lakes, rivers, or bayous.

Landry Vineyards Grape Escape RV Sites

    A fabulous overnight!

We spent the night here in our 36-foot motorhome along with our two yellow Labs. From pulling up to the tasting room, where we were warmly greeted, to the wine we enjoyed on the patio, to the lovely evening outside, and our early start in the morning, everything was perfect!

We did a wine tasting of six wines, then shared a bottle of Sangiovese and took a bottle of Mouvedre for the road. Emily was so helpful to me as I selected wines based on what we know we already like.

Overlooking the vineyards -- what a beautiful view! And the grounds are excellent for walking dogs and admiring the scenery. We were very pleased with the setting and hospitality.

    Beautiful, quiet and relaxing

We stayed at Landry Vineyards for one night.  It was only a few miles off of the highway but was very quiet and secluded.  A beautiful location.  The site was flat, we didn't even have to unhook our trailer.  We will definitely stay again when passing through the area.

Landry Vineyards Grape Escape RV Sites

    Beautiful Place

This a gem in hiding in N. Central Louisiana! The site was amazing - nestled in the back of a vineyard, on the top of a hill. Originally, our site said it was set up for motorized RVs with the hookups set to drive into the site. However, when we arrived (with our 30 foot TT) we found hookups on BOTH sides of the site, making it that much easier for us to hook up. Speaking of hook ups, our site had full hookups - water, electricity, and sewer. The winery was fantastic! We took a tour of the facility, guided by the winemaker and owner. Well worth it. The wines are great, so much so that we left with 6 bottles!

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, or even some place to stop for the night while on your journey, we highly recommend the Grape Escape!

We've stopped at Landry Vineyards on our travels, at least a half dozen times.  This alone can tell you how much we love it there.  This time however, was even better!  We were able to time it to coincide with a Saturday afternoon/evening event there at the vineyard and it was spectacular.  We met up with Libby Landry upon arrival and she was an incredible host that got us situated at a spot right near the tasting area.  We opted for the water/electric hookups and within minutes, we were seated and enjoying live music and fantastic wines.  I tried one of their best sellers, a blackberry merlot and was not disappointed and my wife's favorite (chocolate raspberry) is her favorite.  Later on, a bagpipe group showed up and played out under the portico and the crowd (which was huge) thoroughly enjoyed their performance.  As the evening wound down, we just enjoyed the wonderful views of the vineyard and knew in our hearts, that we'll be back again.  If you haven't made the stop at this place, you've truly missed out.  Stop and see Jeff and Libby and the beautiful place they've built.

This is not a destination campground, but it's a decent place to stay for a few nights passing through. It's a trailer park/RV park. The upside is It's really cheap. 2 nights, full hook up only $58. It's 8 miles from the Duck Commander warehouse and museum, which we plan to visit today.

Guide to Fairbanks

Dispersed camping spots near Fairbanks, Louisiana offer a mix of primitive sites and developed options, situated among the region's pine forests and waterways. The area sits at low elevation with gently rolling hills that provide natural drainage during Louisiana's frequent rain events. Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area recently implemented a $5 permit requirement for overnight stays, a change from its previously free access policy.

What to do

Fishing access: Poverty Point Reservoir State Park provides direct reservoir access for anglers. "Kids had a blast walking to the reservoir and hiking some trails. Will go back! One of the friendly park groundskeepers came and said hello when we arrived and introduced himself," notes Abraham H.

Wine tasting: Landry Vineyards offers camping with the unique opportunity to enjoy vineyard views and tastings. "The winery was fantastic! We took a tour of the facility, guided by the winemaker and owner. Well worth it. The wines are great, so much so that we left with 6 bottles!" shares Shaun C.

Hiking trails: Multiple trails wind through the forested areas around camping sites, with varied difficulty levels. "The RV camping area has a nice, new, and clean restroom and shower facility with coin-operated laundry," notes Heath H. about facilities at Chemin-A-Haut State Park.

What campers like

Level sites: Many RV parks feature concrete pads or gravel sites designed for easy setup. "Our site was LEVEL!!! Gravel site, pulled in, put the truck in park and we were almost perfectly level. Nice and quiet," reports Roscoe's R. about their stay at Ouachita RV Park.

Private spots: Campers appreciate the spacious layout at certain parks. "It was a beautiful location that allowed us to overlook the vineyard. It was very easy to get into and out of with our 45' 5th wheel," Jamie R. mentions about their experience at Landry Vineyards.

Clean facilities: The well-maintained bathhouses receive frequent positive mentions. "Bathrooms are hands down the best I've ever seen. Campsites aren't on top of each other but are pretty close," writes Taylor C. about Chemin-A-Haut State Park.

What you should know

Permit requirements: Some wildlife management areas now charge fees. "Perfectly fine site, a very nice ranger kindly told me that it's $5, just FYI!" reports Cole J. about Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area.

Seasonal crowds: Many campgrounds see minimal usage during weekdays but fill on weekends. "We stayed at Landry Vineyards on a Saturday and they were quite busy. This probably accounts for why one of the owners was a bit curt," shares Steven V.

Variable ground conditions: The region's soil can become saturated during rain events. "We could hear local cows and dogs but nothing so loud as to disrupt our sleep," notes Lea B. about the dispersed camping area at Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area, adding that "the ground was soft."

Tips for camping with families

Splash pad access: Water features provide cooling recreation during hot summer months. "Nice clean camp sites, sewer hookup available as well. Nice area with amazing views. The splash pad is a huge hit!" comments Kimberly V. about Poverty Point Reservoir State Park.

Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children. "There is a boat launch and hiking trails, along with the mounds. Definitely a beautiful spot to camp," describes Tyler H. about facilities at Poverty Point Reservoir State Park.

Wildlife viewing: Kids enjoy spotting local animals around campsites. "Raccoons are very curious and obviously human fed because they will walk right up to you. Best feature in the park is the Chemin-A-Haut Creek were 1000 year old Cypress trees are scattered throughout," notes Nicki M.

Tips from RVers

Hookup locations: Several parks offer hookups on both sides of sites. "Originally, our site said it was set up for motorized RVs with the hookups set to drive into the site. However, when we arrived (with our 30 foot TT) we found hookups on BOTH sides of the site, making it that much easier for us to hook up," shares Shaun C.

Leveling needs: Bring blocks for sites that may need adjustment. "The site was rock and not quite level since we had to use leveling blocks to avoid having the back tires of our 39 foot motorhome lifted off the ground," advises Steven V.

Location benefits: Ouachita RV Park provides convenient interstate access. "Less than 5 minutes off I-20 in north east Louisiana. Being that close, I thought it would have been really loud, but it wasn't! I heard more birds than anything," explains Cat R.
