    Tipsaw Lake

    Great Camp Spot for Families

Besides picking the only weekend where the camp had plumbing issues… my 4 year old daughter and I loved this place. This was my first time camping in Indiana and it did not let me down! The rangers were very nice and was pleased to answer any of my questions, the lake and bathrooms were clean and the place was nice and quiet. I’ll be back again.

    Harmonie State Park Campground

    Lotsa trees

Ranger Review: Primus at Harmonie State Park

I recently visited Harmonie State Park near New Harmony, In. https://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=IN&parkId=570048 Just a heads up when camping in Indiana there is a fee to visit the State Parks. I always carry cash for that , laundry and in some states bathroom use. So, the number one thing that stuck out to me about this campground was the shade. For the most part it’s level (floodplain...I saw no standing water) And all the sites are nicely shaded (we are talking full growth) and good size. The sites are electric only, no water, no sewer. There are centrally located water hydrants and a dump station on the way out of the campground. The campground wasn’t very full when we visited, but there is a plethora of activities to enjoy. An Olympic size pool which back in the day my kids woulda loved. Hiking paths (very wide), one right by the campground and a connector trail to the mountain bike trail area. There’s also a bike section on the paved roads. You could spend a comfortable week here and not be bored.

Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I get to occasionally try out outdoor products while camping and this trip I brought along some Primus “kitchen gear” https://primus.us/ . Primus is known for its camping stoves , the kitchen accessories are pretty sweet too. I have the Trailsporks , a long spoon , a spatula for grilling , campfire plates and a campfire knife. These are very sturdy made accessories and pack in my kit without taking up a lot of space. There are a lot of options on the site to fit your packing needs too, from family fireside to fastpacking . I’m building my fireside kitchen kit .

    Scales Lake Park

    Excellent Primitive Site

This was our first time camping and I must say I absolutely loved our site. We were on a primitive site number 109. Though the ground was a little rocky the lake views were spectacular. There was a porto potty in walking distance. When we first arrived it was pretty clean but after the weekend it was really bad and ran out of toilet paper. But the bathroom facilities by the slide were great you just had to drive to it from the primitive sites. Water slide was a blast and loved the petting zoo, also the volleyball court was a fun addition too. Though a little close to the road. All in all we will definitely be staying there again.

Warrick County Park Scales Lake Park

    Peaceful But Plain

A very peaceful place to camp with helpful rangers. There was a free petting zoo which was great but the animals seemed very discontented. The trails were interesting but vacant of trail markers and some plaques were vandalized from years before. Firewood is $8 a bundle and parking is $3 a day. Well priced and serene, but I would recommend this for people without children or someone looking for a camp away from any kind of excitement.

Nice beach, trails and playground. Friendly camper. Pet friendly. Would've given 5 stars but our site was tight. Squeezed between 2 sites, out the front door fight to neighbors sewer hose.

    Scales Lake Park

    A wonderful place for family

My wife and I camped here in February of 2020. This is a very well maintained park. We had just bought our 29' motorhome. It was too cold to do much, but the campground is nice. There is a petting zoo for the kids, a nice pool with a large water slide, 1 shower house that was very clean. Clean restrooms. A large lake for fishing and swimming. Walking trails, wood available for purchase. They even have cabins for rent, and lots of primitive sites. I recommend this park to all!

Guide to Newburgh

Camping opportunities near Newburgh, Indiana span a mix of state parks, county facilities, and private campgrounds within a 30-mile radius of the town. The area sits along the Ohio River at an elevation of about 400 feet and features rolling hills transitioning to flatter terrain. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide milder weather between 50-75°F.

What to do

Hiking and biking trails: At Scales Lake Park, campers can access mountain bike trails along with a pump track specifically designed for kids. "Scales Lake is a wonderful campground... Hiking, mountain bike trails along wIth pump track for kIds," notes Jennifer T., who appreciates the variety of outdoor activities available.

Fishing opportunities: Miles Landing Campground offers access to multiple fishing ponds in a reclaimed mining area. "Fairly new with great access to fishing. Bike riding enjoying nature. Several pull through sites and all are full hook up," explains Wendy T. The campground is situated amid young forest growth with numerous small lakes.

Swimming and beach access: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas for cooling off during hot summer months. "There is a beach area with small fee. Full hook up sites," mentions Jessica D. about the swimming facilities at Scales Lake Park. The beach areas typically include designated swimming zones with lifeguards during peak season.

What campers like

Quieter, less crowded options: For campers seeking more privacy, primitive sites often provide more seclusion. "We've camped there as a large group and as a family several times... We prefer the primitive sites on the other side of the lake. Literally just a picnic table and fire pit. There's pit toilets nearby," shares Laura D. about her experience at Scales Lake Park.

Clean facilities: Lynnville Park maintains well-kept grounds despite its proximity to Interstate 64. "Nice little campground next to a small lake. We stayed for one night. Sites are big and spaced apart. Nice and quiet, apart from the interstate background noise which is noticeable but not too bad," reports Thomas W. The park's honor system registration allows for after-hours check-in.

Unique camping layouts: Some campgrounds feature distinctive site arrangements. "We had 3 RVs in our group and we camped in one of the 'wagon wheels'. It was a very cool experience," describes Dan H. about Scales Lake Park. These circular arrangements create a community feel but require coordination when arriving or departing.

What you should know

Site spacing considerations: Many campgrounds in the area feature closely positioned sites. "The sites are very close together, so when the campsites are full you don't feel like you have much privacy or personal space," notes Stefanie W. about her October stay at Scales Lake Park. For more spacious sites, consider visiting during weekdays or non-peak seasons.

Highway noise levels: Some campgrounds in the Newburgh area sit close to major roadways. At John James Audubon State Park Campground, "the campground is layed out parallel to highway 41. The sound of traffic whizzing by on the highway is constant," reports Laura E., adding that "lights of those businesses shine into the campground."

Limited dog-friendly trails: Pet-friendly camping near Newburgh, Indiana sometimes comes with restrictions on trail access. "I just want to start by saying this is a really neat park. The only problem that I have with it is if you have a dog there's only one trail that is dog friendly," explains Drew C. about John James Audubon State Park Campground. Always check trail pet policies before planning hikes with dogs.

Tips for camping with families

Petting zoo access: Warrick County Park Scales Lake Park offers a unique animal experience for children. "There is a small petting zoo which was great but the animals seemed very discontented," notes Fox S., adding that the park also has "trails for dogs, nice view of the pond from the main RV area."

Playground availability: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children. "Two playgrounds, little petting zoo for kids. Beach area with small fee. Full hook up sites," reports Jessica D. about the family amenities at Scales Lake Park. These playgrounds typically include standard equipment suitable for various age groups.

Holiday World proximity: For families seeking major attractions, Lake Lincoln Campground provides convenient access to a popular theme park. "Lincoln State Park is usually packed. It's less than 10 miles away from Holiday World. I think a lot of theme park visitors camp here," shares Danielle M. The campground offers both electric and primitive sites with clean facilities.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Pay attention to campground terrain when selecting sites. "Recently tried out Scales Lake...not my 1st choice. Sites were very small and close together. There were several different spots/clusters of camp sites. Some where full hook up, some primitive, some just electric, and all mixed together," explains Olivia S., noting the variety of hookup options available.

Access challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow approach roads that can be difficult for larger rigs. "The streets in the town are extremely narrow, making it hard to get into the park," adds Olivia S. about Scales Lake Park. When traveling with larger RVs, call ahead to confirm accessibility and recommended approaches to the campground.
