Nolin River Lake offers several RV campgrounds near Garrett, Kentucky. The lake spans 5,795 acres with 38 miles of shoreline and reaches depths of 157 feet in some areas. Most campgrounds in this region operate from May through September, with some extending into October.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Moutardier Campground sits directly on Nolin Lake, making it ideal for anglers. "The view of the lake from the teardrop camper was awesome. We kayaked around the lake which was very enjoyable - saw ducks, and birds such as a grey heron. Also lots of fish jumping," notes a visitor.
Hiking trails: The area offers several hiking options for campers looking to explore the terrain. "There is also a two mile hike that is in the campground called Shady Creek Trail. It looked like it had not been hiked in a while but it went through woods, small stream and had a cool rock formation," reports one Moutardier guest.
Holiday World access: Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph provides convenient access to Holiday World amusement park. "We got to the park shortly after it opened, which means we had about an hour in the main park before Splashin' Safari opened. The Voyage in particular is intense," explains one camper. The campground also offers a tram service to the park.
What campers like
Lakeside sites: Campers appreciate the waterfront locations available at Dog Creek Campground. "We chose to camp in a primitive site and ended up right on the lake. We are here during the week so it's really nice and quiet," explains one reviewer. Many sites have direct water views.
Well-maintained facilities: The Army Corps of Engineers maintains several campgrounds in the region. "The Army Corp of Engineers do a good job of using all the designated space for campsites but still keep it picturesque and clean. The facilities are newer and well maintained," notes a camper at Wax - Nolin River Lake.
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer generously sized sites. "Sites were well spaced and spacious with a fire ring and table," reports a camper at Wax Campground. At Dog Creek, "sites each have a fire ring, nice picnic table, and extra 'cooking' table that was an added plus."
What you should know
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly by location. At Camp Carlson Army RV Park, "the ONLY bad thing about this campground is that it is in a bowl -- no cell service, no satellite, no internet. Perfect for a QUIET getaway!!" Other campgrounds have similarly limited connectivity.
Shade availability: Tree cover varies between campgrounds and specific sites. At Dog Creek Campground, visitors note it's "lacking in restrooms and shade trees. Good for boaters as there is a nice sand bank to pull your boat up to." Site selection makes a significant difference in comfort.
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "Seems all sites have a lake view. Less than half full sun-Tuesday," notes one Dog Creek visitor during the off-peak period, indicating busier times require advance planning.
Tips for camping with families
Halloween activities: Seasonal events provide extra entertainment for families. "Family friendly Halloween fun. Has a decorating contest with trick or treat in the campground. Safe and clean with lots of restrooms and lake front sites," explains a visitor to Moutardier Campground.
Playground access: Multiple recreation areas include play equipment for children. "A wonderful campground with electric, water, dump station. Nolan Lake is beautiful. Campground extremely well maintained, quiet," reports one camper at Dog Creek.
Fishing with kids: The lake provides accessible fishing opportunities. "Love this campground. Have not found a bad spot yet. Family and pet friendly," notes a Moutardier visitor. Another mentions, "Lake is perfect for swimming, boating, or kayaking."
Tips from RVers
Leveling considerations: Many RV sites require some adjustment. At Brooks RV Park, visitors appreciate the "nice sized sites, reasonable priced compared to the KOA, all good full hookups, nicely kept, and most importantly it is in a safe country setting surrounded by large trees." The park offers level sites with full hookups.
Site selection strategy: Choosing the right site matters for comfort. "Site selection is all important at this campsite. Some have wonderful lake access, shade, and a bit of seclusion. Others no trees, no lake, in the middle of everyone. Section C has some of the nicer sites," advises a Dog Creek camper.
Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer various utility options. "50 AMP, Water, Overlooking Nolin Lake" are available at Dog Creek, though it has "no sewer (dump station only)." Moutardier offers water and electric but limited sewer connections.
