    Horse Cave KOA

    This is a CUTE campground!

This is a super cute campground.  Easily accessible and very clean sites!  There is a small barn with animals penned up so you can just walk up to the fence and pet them.  My wife and daughter loved that!  Great little dog park with a mini obstacle course.  We had a great little trip here and would love to come again for a longer stay!

    Louisville South KOA

    Nice

There was lots to do at this KOA. There was corn hole, ladder ball, pool, walking trails, access to the river, cat fish pond, small dog park, and washers & dryers. You could bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or rent a cabin. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. The spots were close together. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The park was clean and well maintained.

    Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet, bathrooms lacking.

We had a pretty decent time at Taylorsville Lake. The spots were spacious, and very nice picnic tables. We did a trail which was nice and went down to a boat ramp to see the lake. You can also rent boats there as well. The bathrooms in my opinion needed a major cleaning. They were nice just not very clean. We most likely won’t visit here again but was nice to hit a Kentucky campground. I have found that camping in Kentucky is much cheaper than in Indiana. Definitely worth a checkout.

    Louisville South KOA

    Great place to stay

The staff are super helpful. The site we had was for a 38’ RV. Full hookups, dog park, lots of places to walk, even trails. We had a great stay here and will most likely come back next time we’re near Louisville.

    Buffalo Trace Park

    Great lake view

The sites are well-spaced and there’s a beautiful lake where you can kayak, canoe, fish, let your dog swim, etc. Disc golf is the big activity at this park. Awesome walking path and a petting zoo. The park is exceptionally clean. Sites on the lake view side are noisy due to traffic on the highway.

    Moutardier

    Lakeside, fisherman's paradise

Moutardier Campground is a fisherman’s paradise. It is located on Nolin River Lake. Our site was lakeside which was beautiful (Site D6). This campsite offered electric/water hookup, fire pit, picnic table, filet table, bathrooms, and showers. There were boat ramps, a marina nearby to rent boats, and also offered a playground. Pets were welcomed (we have a dog and a hiking cat). We also had cell service (Verizon).

The view of the lake from the teardrop camper was awesome. We kayaked around the lake which was very enjoyable - saw ducks, and birds such as a grey heron. Also lots of fish jumping. There are power boats allowed in the lake. Many people were fishing from their boats, kayaks, or from the shore.

There is also a two mile hike that is in the campground called Shady Creek Trail. It looked like it had not been hiked in a while but it went through woods, small stream and had a cool rock formation at one part that you would swear is a haven for snakes. Pets enjoyed it but beware if you do not like spiders. This trail was covered in spiders and webs. No exaggeration that we cleared about a hundred spiders out of our path.

The campground was very well manicured and clean. Many of the sites were right on the lake. They were close together but did not seem it as they were on different levels and angles. Everyone was quiet and courteous. Bathrooms were very clean and well lit. The showers were “dated” - water stains but clean. Great water pressure and hot water.

There was no store on the campground but 5 minutes away was a great little restaurant called Sherry’s that we had both lunch and breakfast at. Food was delicious (fried dill pickle chips!) and one could buy bags of ice.

Overall this was a very relaxing campground. We met some wonderful people who have been coming to the campground for years. It is about 30 minutes from Mammoth Caves which was a great place to explore. Overall we gave the campground a 4 - lakeside and if you love to fish - it’s paradise.

Mammoth Cave Campground — Mammoth Cave National Park

    Great camping spot

We booked a group site and had 3 tents. It’s very woodsy and tranquil. Bathrooms were close by and air conditioned too! The showers are in the general store building where the post office is so a short walk or drive there. It’s coin operated with a change machine for bills. $1.50 to turn the shower on and insert more coins before it turns off for additional time if needed. The park is amazing and there’s lots of trails that lead to caves and cave openings. All the cave tours within the park were fully booked when we went so we booked some private tours outside the park in the surrounding area. Lots of opportunities to see caves! We stayed for two nights and did some star gazing! Overall great campground and facilities. They also have a kennel for a small fee at the park lodge if you bring your pet and you’re going in a cave tour whether in the park or outside of it. Pets are generally not allowed in caves. Just confirm pet is vaccinated.

    Bourbon Springs RV Resort

New Campground with a Lot of Promise

We received an information email the day before prior to arrival with general info and wifi password plus how to pre check in. The morning of arrival, we received another email with specific instructions to not trust GPS and follow their instructions. Our Trip Wizard and Waze GPS instructions actually brought us right to the campground  (CG). Since we had pre checked in, we were instructed in the directions email to go directly to deluxe pull-through site 78, where our welcome package would be in the electrical box. The site was plenty long enough for our 40’ toy hauler and F450. Not sure why this is a deluxe site as its gravel with a picnic table and portable fire pit? The utilities were more towards the front of the pad with no issues reaching the connections. It was a nice touch to see a small cement circle pad on the sewer connection. This is a new CG, so amenities like the laundry and gift shop were not opened yet. Water pressure was good. We got 4 bars on Verizon and 3 bars 5G on T-Mobile. We used our T-Mobile Internet versus Starlink. It would not have been an issue to use satellite as there are no mature trees in the campground. They have one large(about 1/4 acre) fenced dog area. The dog park slopes down a hill and connects with a fence that goes around the property. Do not throw small balls down the hill as they can go through the fence and there’s no way to recover the ball due to no openings/gates near by to get to the back of the dog park. There’s also a smaller fenced dog area near the front of the CG. Great customer service before and during our stay.

Guide to Garrett

Campgrounds near Garrett, Kentucky offer primarily wooded sites in rolling hill terrain with elevations ranging from 600-900 feet. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons bring milder 60-75°F days. Several campgrounds provide primitive campsites that require no reservations and have vault toilets rather than full facilities.

What to do

Hiking adventures: Multiple trail systems wind through Jefferson Memorial Forest Campground where campers can experience Kentucky woodland ecosystems. "The interior trail called the orange trail is shorter but great to not run into anyone. Group sites are my favorite, as there is more room," notes Jessica G. Trails range from 1.5 to 13.0 miles through mixed forest.

River activities: Access the Green River from Mammoth Cave Campground for kayaking, swimming, or fishing. "Deer & turkey walk thru ur campsite! Very clean & quiet! The wildlife are very friendly," reports Gloria J. The campground is situated near river access points for water-based recreation during warmer months.

Farm atmosphere: Fishing opportunities at Cecilia Campgrounds provide a rural escape on former dairy farmland. "Beautiful country farm setting old dairy farm located near Cecilia. There are several mowed areas one is near a fishing pond. I've caught largemouth bass over 5 lb from the pond and all kinds of panfish," writes J T. The campground maintains a rustic approach with minimal infrastructure.

What campers like

Wilderness privacy: Campers appreciate the secluded nature of O'Bannon Woods State Park despite its developed facilities. "O'Bannon woods has just about everything in one little nook, from fishing swimming and kayaking on blue River, a beach at the park. Swimming, horse trails and lodging, electric campgrounds," explains Justin B. The campground maintains wooded sites that provide natural separation between camping areas.

Seasonal events: Fall camping at Otter Creek Park Campground features special programming popular with return visitors. "We go every fall with our entire family to enjoy the Halloween activities. The campers all go all out and let the kids trick or treat. There is even a group who does a haunted house and it is so fun!" shares Amber S. The organized seasonal activities run throughout October.

Budget-friendly options: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Garrett provide cost-effective options for overnight stays. At Buzzard Roost Campground, campers note the value: "It's free. Right along the Ohio River. A rugged trail down the river bank, not well maintained but passable," reports Bonnie F. Free and low-cost camping areas typically have fewer amenities but maintain basic sanitation standards.

What you should know

Airport noise concerns: Some campgrounds experience aircraft noise that may impact the wilderness experience. At Louisville South KOA, a German camper noted: "Sehr sauber nettes Personal, ein Nachteil der Platz liegt in der Einflugschneise des Flughafens. Auch die ganze Nacht hört man Fluglärm." (Very clean nice staff, one disadvantage is the campground is in the flight path of the airport. You hear aircraft noise all night.)

Campground availability: Many pet-friendly campgrounds near Garrett fill quickly during peak seasons. "I suggest you make a reservation as this campground fills up quickly. Axtel is located on the shore of Rough River Lake and has over 150 camp sites," advises Heather K. about Axtel Campground. Reservations are recommended 2-3 weeks in advance for weekend stays.

Weather considerations: Kentucky's climate creates seasonal camping challenges. "We stayed at JMF as a shake down for a primitive camping trip to TN. It was nice and quiet - and so close to home!" mentions Verity O. about Jefferson Memorial Forest Campground. Spring brings frequent rain showers while summer humidity can be intense, particularly in July and August.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Several campgrounds near Garrett feature dedicated recreational areas for children. At O'Bannon Woods State Park, one camper reports: "The kids love the pool and trails. The campground sites are spacious and lots of shade in the summer. Beautiful in the fall!" This park maintains a splash pad and water slides with a 42" height requirement.

Educational opportunities: Nature centers provide learning experiences at some locations. "Great nature center w ranger tours. several hiking trails w various difficulties," notes Donald S. about O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground. Ranger-led programs typically run on weekends during peak season and require no advance registration.

Safety considerations: Parents should note terrain challenges at certain campgrounds. "The sites vary in privacy, with those located on the road leading to the camping loop offering more space between neighbors than those on the actual loop," notes a reviewer about site selection at different dog friendly campgrounds in the Garrett area.
