Best Campgrounds near Westmoreland, KS

The Westmoreland, Kansas area features several campground options within a 30-minute drive, ranging from free primitive sites to full-service developed facilities. Pottawatomie County State Lake #2 provides free camping with basic amenities including picnic tables and fire rings, while developed options like River Pond State Park Campground and Tuttle Creek State Park offer more extensive facilities. Campers can choose between tent camping, RV sites with hookups, and cabin accommodations at select locations. The region's camping landscape includes both lakeside opportunities and wooded sites, with several state park and lake access points establishing the primary camping corridors.

Road conditions and campground facilities vary significantly across the region, with some requiring travel on dirt roads that may become difficult after rain. Access to Pottawatomie County State Lake involves driving on gravel roads that can experience washout during wet periods. "This little lake worked perfectly for me. Not a huge detour from I-70 (maybe 20-30 minutes total) - I found the campground completely empty on a Monday night in early September," noted one camper about Pottawatomie County State Lake #2. Seasonal conditions affect camping experience, with summer bringing higher visitation rates, especially at waterfront sites. Most established campgrounds in the area operate year-round, though services may be limited during winter months. Cell service is generally available but can be spotty at more remote locations.

Campers consistently mention the quiet atmosphere and lake access as primary attractions at area campgrounds. Several visitors highlighted the fishing opportunities available at multiple sites, with Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake receiving particular praise for its secluded shoreline access. According to feedback on The Dyrt, the free camping areas often fill up on weekends and holidays but tend to clear out on weeknights, providing more solitude for travelers passing through. Wildlife sightings are commonly reported, with birds and beavers noted in multiple reviews. Many campgrounds feature mature trees providing ample shade, making summer camping more comfortable despite Kansas heat. Campsite spacing varies considerably between locations, with some offering privacy while others have more closely positioned sites, particularly in the developed campgrounds with full hookups.

    Bailey’s RV Resort and Campground

    Great for an overnight stop

Well kept campground ran by a very nice husband and wife. Located on the west side of town, right off of highway 36 makes this easily accessible. Upon entrance, you are taken to your site and given the campground rules, WiFi information, and nearby restaurants. The sites are very clean with full hookups. A small man-made pond sits to the north, with part of a golf course in view. The shower house is clean and spacious. There is a laundry room as well, with a few washers, dryers, and a space to sit. As we were only there overnight during our travels, we did not utilize the group fire pit or covered shelter, but they appeared to be in great condition. Some sites have shade, some are limited. The owners live onsite, which is helpful. Rock pads with some grassy areas in between sites. The campground sits behind a hotel, which helps to minimize the highway noise. Dollar General used to be next to the campground as well, but it has moved. There were construction workers renovating that building while we were there however there were no signs noticed as to what the building will house next. Close to Casey’s for fuel and other amenities. Good overnight stop!

    Calvin's RV

A small RV park on the east edge of Wamego KS. Full electric (30A,50A, and 120V), water, and sanitary dump. Most sites are paved pull through sites. Booking online through Rover Pass was simple and affordable. There is a guest bathroom in the basement of the office building. We were greeted by the owner and the grounds are well maintained and quiet. Just 20 min from Manhattan.

    Smoky Hill RV Park

    Great one night stay

Well-maintained campground. Very close to Highway 70 (you can hear the vehicles) and services (gas, restaurants, Walmart). Ideal for an overnight stay on the road. The sites are long (several large RVs on site), with services and picnic tables on cement patios. No fire pits on the sites (there is one in a common area). Modern bathrooms and showers. Everything is very clean. Laundry room ($0.25 required).

    West Rolling Hills

    Wonderful Campground!

The host was very friendly and helpful. The lake is peaceful. The sites are far apart, some have large trees, and all seemed to be by the lake. There are many shower stalls with no need for quarters. We got a site with full hookups at half the regular $24, with a senior pass. All of this for $12! Oh, did I mentioned that we are far from the I-70, with rolling hills and trees? We highly recommend it!

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds provide well-designed sites with good separation between neighbors. "This is what campgrounds should be! Plenty of space, amazing prices, lots of trees with well kept grass and scenic water views," shares a camper at Riley Point Campground.

Convenient highway access: Several camping areas offer relatively quick access from major highways. "Such a beautiful campground just a short drive (15 min) off the 70. Stopped for one night driving across the country wished we had more time," reports a traveler who stayed at Tuttle Creek Cove.

Seasonal wildlife viewing: Different seasons bring varied wildlife viewing opportunities. "We saw a beautiful owl that flew between the trees," mentions a visitor at Randolph — Tuttle Creek State Park, who also noted: "My husband and I stayed in a site with beautiful trees and sunflowers growing all around us. The monarchs must have been migrating because they were all over the trees."

Close enough off the highway, close enough to shopping. Easy to pull in and find a spot," notes a camper at Pottawatomie County State Lake #2.

What you should know

Seasonal bathroom conditions: Facilities at some campgrounds receive mixed reviews regarding cleanliness. "Bathrooms and showers are disgusting. Campsites are good size, even though there are a million of them," warns a camper at Riley Point Campground.

Weekday vs. weekend occupancy: Campground usage varies significantly throughout the week. "We arrived at around 5 on a Sunday and had a hard time finding a spot by by around 6pm all the locals were leaving and we ended up being the only people there by sunset," shares a visitor at Pottawatomie County State Lake #2.

Insect preparedness: Certain times of year require extra protection from insects. "Bring bug spray, as the mosquitoes and chiggers were biting!" warns a visitor at Randolph — Tuttle Creek State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Community parks with camping: Local parks provide amenities for family outings. "Beautiful park right off Highway 16 in Olsburg, KS. Lots of shade provided by big trees and a lovely picnic shelter - complete with a prep area and double charcoal grill," shares a visitor at Greenwood Park.

Swimming options: Several locations offer swimming opportunities during summer. "There is a nice beach area to swim," notes a July 4th visitor at Tuttle Creek Cove who enjoyed family water recreation.

Kid-friendly wildlife: Seasonal animal activity provides educational opportunities. "We stopped at this camping spot on our way from Georgia to Colorado. This was one of our favorite spots because it wasn't overly populated. Also the wild life was great," explains a family at Pottawatomie County State Lake #2.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling considerations: Some RV sites require additional preparation for comfort. "Pull throughs are not too level and services are on the wrong side so make sure your hose and electric cable are long enough," advises an RVer at River Pond State Park Campground.

Navigation challenges: Large campgrounds can be difficult to navigate, especially after dark. "Park does need to label the roads with site numbers. I recommend arriving in daylight to find your spot, as well as researching your location beforehand," suggests an RVer at River Pond State Park Campground.

Full hookup availability: Limited full service sites require advance planning. "This park is close to home for us and we camp here often. Most sites are only water and electric. There are only a half dozen or so full hook up sites and they are generally always full during camping season," explains a regular camper at River Pond State Park Campground.
