Campgrounds near Oakley, Kansas concentrate along the I-70 corridor, providing convenient overnight stops for travelers crossing the state. High Plains Camping and Kansas Country Inn & RV Park offer full-hookup sites within city limits, while several state parks and fishing lakes provide more nature-oriented camping experiences within driving distance. Accommodation types range from primitive tent sites to RV parks with complete utilities, and several locations like Kansas Country Inn & RV Park and Historic Lake Scott State Park feature cabin rentals for those seeking non-tent options.

Western Kansas camping operates year-round with most developed campgrounds offering reliable access regardless of season. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F, making shade a premium amenity at more established sites. Winter brings cold temperatures and occasional snow, though major highways remain passable. Many campgrounds in this region serve primarily as convenient overnight stops rather than destination camping. Cell coverage is generally strong near the interstate corridor but may weaken in more remote locations like state fishing lakes. A camper noted, "Not much to do other than have a drink and watch the beautiful sunset," highlighting the simple appeal of these prairie campgrounds.

Lake Scott State Park, located about 30 miles from Oakley, represents the most scenic camping destination in the area with multiple campgrounds situated around a spring-fed lake nestled in a scenic valley. Visitors consistently praise this unexpected oasis amid the otherwise flat landscape. According to one visitor, "As you approach this lake, you will think your GPS is lying to you. You are in the middle of corn fields and no lake is visible, even when you are just a mile away." Campgrounds in the area typically provide basic amenities like picnic tables and fire rings, though some primitive sites may lack formal facilities. RV travelers will find several options with full hookups, particularly those positioned as convenient overnight stops along the interstate. For travelers seeking more amenities, KOA Goodland (located further west) offers additional services including a camp store, playground, and seasonal pool.

Circle Drive — Historic Lake Scott State Park

      Stunning lakeside views spacious sites

This campground is one of the best I’ve ever been to. I even learned that it made National Geographic’s top 20 campgrounds you can’t miss and I can see why. We pulled up to our campsite and it was very spacious with lots of grass and space between sites. Getting into the park was super easy. There is no gate or gate code needed since it is open 24/7 (confirmed with park service). You can come at any time of day, there is an honor system where you can pay $5 per vehicle and $20 a campsite if you come by needing somewhere to stay for the night. It seems like every site had a beautiful view of the canyon and lake the camp was situated in. There is a bathhouse with showers and bathrooms but you have to drive to it it is about .25 miles from the sites. There is a playground for kids, fishing, a camp store. Vault bathrooms closer to the groups of sites. The weather was so ideal when we visited in June of this year. I would definitely come back to visit.

Great for overnight camping with full hookups

No amenities. Straight forward slips with 50 amp electric, sewer and water. $30 a night, they accept cash only. In an industrial area. Surprisingly quiet. Wouldn't want to live here but for an overnight stay while on the move where else can ya find full hookups for $30? There is a bar and grill within walking distance that has decent food.

Flatland Campground — Historic Lake Scott State Park

      Quick overnight primitive camp

Spot was beautiful, but very close together and loud neighbors (even after quiet hours) made a not so peaceful evening. Fire pits and tables seemed it good condition.

Further away from the road is best. A lot of late night traffic to and from the adjacent RV park.

      Short Notice Overnight

I stopped overnight here on my way back to Colorado from Thanksgiving in Kansas. I needed to escape the wind. Self check in after hours was fairly simple (cash only). Sites were easy to navigate, long and level. I had 5gUW reception with Verizon. Would stay here again. New owners were very nice.

      Everything You Need

If you’re looking for a dream destination, then keep going until you get deep into Colorado. This is not a vacation destination, but it certainly has everything you need. I stayed here for 4 nights and my site had electric, water, and sewer. The water pressure was great and I didn’t have a any issues with utilities even though temperatures dropped to 12 degrees outside. It’s close to the highway, which is convenient, but there is a little noise from the highway. The noise wasn’t bad and didn’t bother me at all. The campground has laundry and bathrooms on site. There’s also a gas station across the street and a Mexican restaurant right next to the campground. For western Kansas, this place is top notch. I will definitely stay here again in the future.

      Great Fall Camping

My girlfriend and I met here early in November for a few days. We were pleasantly surprised at the beauty and remoteness of the location. Both of us grew up in southeast Kansas and didn’t realize what a different geological and historical history the region contained. We will be returning

      Clean, quiet location

We were passing through northern Kansas on 36 Hwy on the way back from a Colorado motorcycle trip and needed an overnight stay for tent camping. We arrived after dark and called the number on the sign. The friendly attendant told us we could tent camp for free anywhere in the grassy areas by the lake. The campground was quiet and clean. I would highly recommend this location.

    Guide to Oakley

Camping near Oakley, Kansas occurs at elevations around 3,000 feet in the High Plains region where wind conditions often exceed 15-20 mph during spring and fall. Summer temperatures frequently reach triple digits while winter lows can drop below zero, creating distinct camping challenges across seasons. Local campgrounds typically provide gravel pads rather than paved surfaces, with limited natural shade available except at Lake Scott State Park.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Sheridan State Fishing Lake, campers can access multiple shoreline spots for catching stunted populations of carp, catfish, crappie and bluegill. A game warden reported: "The fish (carp, catfish, crappie, bluegill & shad) are all stunted. Too many fish for a small lake."

Visit historic sites: Lake Scott State Park contains El Cuartelejo ruins, the northernmost known pueblo in the United States. The park's location also provides access to Monument Rocks and Little Jerusalem Badlands within 20-minute drives. As one reviewer noted: "Close to castle Rock Badlands, monument rocks and Little Jerusalem Badlands which made for a great time."

Night sky viewing: The minimal light pollution in western Kansas provides excellent stargazing conditions, particularly at primitive sites away from highway corridors. At Sheridan State Fishing Lake, a camper had "a majestic night here. Was just me and one other person. Campsites right up by the lake, and I was able to forage enough dry wood for a big ol' fire."

    What campers like

Unexpected terrain: Unlike the flat farmland surrounding it, Historic Lake Scott State Park features dramatic changes in elevation. A reviewer described: "This park is a gem!!! Just a mile away all you can see is the flat flat farmlands of KS and then the road dips down into the canyon and you're in another world with a spring fed lake and shady cottonwood trees, mesas and rock formations."

Budget-friendly options: Free camping at Sheridan State Fishing Lake offers waterfront sites with basic amenities. A visitor mentioned: "Great free camp location. Had the place almost all to ourselves. Big rig friendly. Many empty campsites right on the lake."

Onsite dining options: High Plains Camping in Oakley features food service options unusual for the region. One camper noted: "They have a cafe 'Grub n Chug'. Great pizza and beer at a reasonable price," while another mentioned: "Ordered food from Cap'n Jack's Pub which was delivered to our RV. Food was good pub food!"

    What you should know

Wildlife encounters: The rural setting brings various wildlife interactions including owls, herons, and coyotes. At Sheridan State Fishing Lake, a camper reported: "I got to see 2 great blue herons and listen to 2 great horned owls call to each other at night - how awesome!"

Wind protection strategies: Strong, consistent wind affects camping comfort throughout the region. At Lakeview Campground, site selection becomes critical. Consider campgrounds with natural windbreaks like Timber Canyon where, as one camper noted, "These spaces are blocked from the wind and feel more private than the Lakeview campground."

Plant hazards: Several campgrounds contain goathead burrs that can puncture shoes, tent floors, and dog paws. At Kansas Country Inn & RV Park, a camper warned: "Watch for the thorny burrs that get all over shoes especially if you have a dog…. Would be very painful for them."

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming access: Lake Scott State Park offers a designated swim beach with seasonal amenities. A reviewer shared: "An easy walk to the swim beach and little bait shop and store open on the weekends. The lake is small and quiet with fishers and kayakers. We swam a lot, fished a bit even though the fish weren't biting."

Playground availability: Goodland KOA, 45 minutes west of Oakley, provides recreational facilities beyond natural features. As one camper observed: "There is a swimming pool (which was closed), a basketball goal, and a playground."

Bathroom conditions: Facility cleanliness varies significantly between campgrounds. At Goodland KOA, a visitor noted: "Very friendly people and very clean bathrooms. Incredibly easy check in and they have an after-hours process that is so convenient and quick."

    Tips from RVers

Overnight positioning: Kansas Country Inn & RV Park offers budget-friendly overnight accommodations with electrical hookups. A traveler explained: "Desk clerk was great. Got a level space to park, electric and bathrooms with a shower for $22. Perfect no fuss stop to nap and clean while passing through."

Site leveling challenges: Many western Kansas campgrounds feature uneven sites requiring leveling blocks. At Historic Lake Scott State Park's Lakeview Campground, a visitor cautioned: "Not very level where I was. No toilets in this CG. Nearest is about 1/3 mile away - vault toilet."

Utility connections: High Plains Camping in Oakley offers spacious full-hookup sites with updated amenities under new management. According to a camper: "The camp sites in section 300/400 are spacious with full utilities. It's tired, but clean."
